7.11 - ALLERGY MEDICATION, OPHTHALMIC (Rx)
(Naphazoline and Antazoline - Vasocon-A, Lodoxamide - Alomide, Cromolyn - Crolom)
INDICATIONS:
- Vasocon-A: Relief of ocular irritation and redness due to allergic or inflammatory ocular conditions.
- Alomide & Crolom: Treatment of allergic ocular disorders (allergic conjunctivitis).
DOSE:
- Vasocon-A: Used only when needed to reduce irritation. Therapy should not last more than 3 - 4 days.
- Instill 1 - 2 drops in each affected eye every 3 - 4 hours.
- Crolom: Used regularly for as long as needed to sustain improvement. Treatment may be required for up to 6 weeks.
- Instill 1 - 2 drops in each affected eye 4 - 6 times a day.
- Alomide: Used regularly for up to 3 months.
- Instill 1 - 2 drops in each affected eye 4 times a day.
SUPPLIED:
- Vasocon-A: Naphazoline 0.05% and antazoline 0.5%
- DROPS: 15 ml dropper bottle.
- Crolom: Cromolyn sodium 4%
- DROPS: 2.5 ml & 10 ml dropper bottle.
- Alomide: Lodoxamide tromethamine 0.1%
- DROPS: 10 ml Drop-Tainer.
COST:
- Vasocon-A is inexpensive, Crolom & Alomide are relatively expensive.
CAUTIONS:
- Vasocon-A should not be used in patients with glaucoma.
- Vasocon-A may cause hypertension or CNS depression.
- Crolom and Alomide may cause a transient stinging or buring sensation following application.
COMMENTS:
- Crolom & Alomide must be used on a regular basis for optimal benefit.
- Patients wearing soft contact lenses should not use these products.
- Overuse of Vasocon-A may produce increased redness and/or irritation of the eye.
