GORY LORI-A Review
GORY LORI-A Review
What do you get when you take a hot, gun wielding cycle chick, a post Apocalyptic future and the undead? Well, it’s not another George Romero film or a popular video game. It’s GORY LORI: the latest offering from Chanting Monks Studios. Brought to you by the team of Joseph M. Monks, Jeff Salisbury and Mike Koneful, it’s all neatly packaged under a cool and colorful cover by painter Daniel R.Horne.
Don’t expect an earth shattering plot in this one. In a nutshell, our heroine is trying to survive a plague ridden future filled with zombies when she meets a kid at the local convenience store. This is where the title turns from MAD MAX IN ZOMBIELAND to a gory buddy comic with Lori and “The Kid” fighting and fleeing from the undead.
That’s it. That’s the whole storyline.
But the book excels due to Monks command of the pulp writing style and Salisbury and Koneful’s gritty, gory underground comics inspired artwork. Harking back to artists such as Corben, Spain Rodriguez and others, the brains and body parts drip, drop and are expelled off the page in cinematic splendor. It’s 21 pages of zombie madness.
There is also a 5 page backup called “No Playtime for Amy” by Monks, Koneful and Horne that is just plain creepy. And, as an extra added bonus, there is a four page article by Monks with behind the scenes photos about the making of the new Indy film THE BUNKER starring Saskia Gonzalez and PODIUM friend/fiend Terry M. West.
This is a fun little self published title that you just sit back and let wash over you. Don’t expect any Earth shattering crossover action or any continuity shifting story. It’s a zombie book with dead folks and gore. If this is up your alley, then jump all over it. And be warned: issue #2 and #3 have already been solicited so expect to see them before the summer of ‘06 is gone.
