David achieved full Beach T/A status in October after running a successful Beach Lifeguard course. He approaches all aspects of training and assessing with professionalism and enthusiasm and should be particularly congratulated for his assessing style. He has continued to teach in the pool most weeks and many members have benefited from his expertise. In addition to this he has achieved several awards in the course of the year.

  Boatman of the Year
Goes to Mark Shakles
Mark has co-ordinated the Easter Boat Handling course for the last three years where numerous people from RLSS Poole Lifeguard club and other clubs have obtained RYA qualifications. He has ensured the courses have been run in a highly professional manner. Mark also reviewed and developed a new Coxswain structure for the club, which has allowed the club to provide a professional service to users of Poole bay. During the year Mark also obtained his RYA level 2 Powerboat and RYA Safety Boat qualifications. In addition to this he performed coxswain duties for the club during the summer.

  Associate Member

Theo displays constant enthusiasm for virtually all club activities. He is always willing to help, especially as a casualty even when it is cold and windy. Theo can easily be identified by his cheerful smile. .

  Services to Life Saving
Goes to Anita Kovács
Anita joined the club early in the summer of 2007. She was gaining work experience and returned to Hungary in September. Anita gained her RLSS Beach Lifeguard Qualification and Life Support 3 by attending both pool and beach training sessions as often as she could. In addition to her training Anita assisted in providing safety cover at various events throughout the summer and competed in the summer twilight competitions. Anita's only means of transport was her bicycle. Anita provided an example to us all. She worked hard and was always enthusiastic.

  Certificate Of Thanks
Goes to Poole Harbour Canoe Club
With the growing number of entries for the Brownsea Island Swim the club would not be able to provide sufficient safety cover for the event without the assistance of the Poole Harbour Canoe Club. They all displayed great enthusiasm on the day, encouraging swimmers all the way round and they should all be thanked for their assistance. .

  Certificate Of Thanks

For agreeing to help out with the rookie training from new and for taking such an enthusiastic approach to it. Simon is a new member of the club who's daughter joined earlier in the year and has displayed an enthusiastic approach to its members and its activities

The following is a list of all those that were also nominated
for the wards for 2007, so congratulations to you all as well

Lifeguard of the Year
James Marsh.

James has tirelessly put the club first this year, he has always been thinking of ways to better the club for our members, from attracting members to training them and ways of funding the club.  He has taught a number of courses throughout the year and been present at the beach for a large proportion of the time.

Assistant Lifeguard of the Year
Lucy Pottinger Cracknell (too old for the award - could consider under Lifeguard)
For general enthusiasm for the club and for assisting at various club events during the summer season.

  Rookie of the Year
Theo Smith

Tremendous enthusiasm for all club activities.  Willingness to help with any task however uninviting.  Acting as a casualty with a cheerful smile even when very cold.

Boatman of the Year
Chris Smith

Simply for putting more hours into the boat than anyone else this year - many thanks

Training Shield
Fiona Revill

For continued enthusiam with training of members throughout the year.
With the insurmountable enthusiasm that only she can deliver, Fiona has put in a great deal of time and effort into teaching this year.  Almost a forgotten resource at times, Fiona is one of the most popular trainers; not only due to her uniquely engaging delivery, but also due to a healthy abundance of 'hi-5s'.

Anita Kovacs
Anita had to cram a lot of training into a short window of time to ensure she passed her Beach Lifeguard Qualification.  Not only did she do this, but she attended all the twilights and club events that she could during that time.  She did this with enthusiasm and enjoyment despite the fact that she had to cycle everywhere.

David Ayres
Successful completion of the Beach Trainer Assessor probationary period and qualifying as a full Beach TA.  Continued enthusiasm for all aspects of beach and pool training.

Associate Member
Gail Jones
Equipped with nothing but a few pocket masks, a couple of battered manikins and a knowledge of Life Support and First Aid that means she'd be my 'Phone A Friend' on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' (as long as the question was on hypothermia or something), Gail's Life Support sessions are interesting, engaging and  mercifully easy to follow. With her sidekick Paul Jones, Gail has brought an excellent standard of teaching to a subject area of the utmost importance. Plus she's well scary. Thanks Gail.

Simon Moore
Simon is a new member of the club who's daughter joined earlier in the year.  He has agreed to help out with the rookie training where he displays a entghusiasatic approach.

  Services to Life Saving
Mark Shakles

Another tireless year of work from Shakles. Mark somehow has maintained levels of enthusiasm and conviction in the face of ambivalence and apathy from the rest of us which would have driven a weaker man to distraction. Not only an ideas man, Mark is always seen as the one to make stuff happen. Another splendid Brownsea Swim (in spite of me nearly losing the half-swim results- oooops) organised almost solely by Mark pays enormous credence to this. In spite of having stepped down as Chairman, perhaps due to an understandable desire to actually have a life, Mark has put in supreme amounts of time and effort into the club. Thanks Mark.
