What's an Atheist?  Do Atheists believe anything?  What do you mean "God's a myth?

These questions frequently constitute the opening salvo from Fundies when they enter an Atheist chatroom. It is amazing to see how many of them really do not know the meaning of the words Atheist and myth. But after listening to them for a few minutes it becomes evident that they do not know the meanings of many words which come up frequently in their preachments. This may be due to the fact that their religious beliefs are formed by rote and not through critical thought.

This webpage might have been called a dictionary for dummies, but such a title might already be in use. Suffice it to say that this compilation is for those who have not yet learned to avoid asking stupid questions by first availing themselves of standard reference works. It makes no attempt at or claim for completeness because the ingenuity of Fundie ignorance would require the full time of a staff of wordsmiths in pursuit of the trivial, vulgar and profane use of language.

A number of honorable words are included here. Hotlinks are provided to take the reader to substantial information on those topics. Readers are invited and encouraged to submit additional words, terms or phrases for possible inclusion here.

A    Abbreviated profanity, usually preceded by the words "Kiss My," used by Fundies to avoid TOS violation. In normal usage, two additional "s" letters complete the word.

Accident    "An inevitable occurrence due to the action of immutable natural laws." [DD]  Despite these laws, we still hear Fundies ask: "How'd yall think we got here, by accident???"

Accept/Except    Reversed words, usually seen in Fundie usages such as "Accept a man be born again.....," and, "Unless you Except Jesus as your..... ." Acept is a Fundie synonym of accept.

Ad Hominem Attack    Appealing to personal prejudices or emotions rather than to reason. For many Fundies, Allah is not God, a Catholic is hellbound, and Atheists, Agnostics and Humanists are lost souls. Ad Hominem [adjective] [OW].

Age of Accountability    Accountability [noun] [OW] is the quality or state of being accountable; especially an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or account for one's actions. The age of reason [CE] according to Catholic Encyclopedia.  A doctrine stating that those below an age at which they can understand, and therefore accept or reject, the teachings of Christianity as truth are either incapable of sinning or will not be held accountable for their sins and, therefore, cannot be sent to hell.

Fundies have no definite age at which they believe a child becomes accountable. However, many will state that a child may be held accountable and condemned to hell, should he die without becoming a Christian, as early as the age of six. The term "age of accountability" does not appear in the Bible, nor is there Biblical backing for the concept. Rather, it is clearly a doctrine created in an attempt to appease those who object to the idea of a loving and merciful God sentencing babies to eternal perdition and to prevent the Christian God's character from being maligned.

Agnostic    An Agnostic [1] [noun] [OW] embraces a worldview in which the existence of deity is unknown or unknowable. Derives from the Greek agnostos, a = without, gnostos = known or knowledge.  "Agnostic[ism] [CE] was coined by Professor T.H. Huxley in 1869 to describe the mental attitude of one who regarded as futile all attempts to know the reality corresponding to our ultimate scientific, philosophic, and religious ideas."

Allah    The Muslim name for God used in the Holy Qur'an.  Allah [CE] is equivalent to the monotheistic God of  the Hebrew scriptures and the pre-trinitarian God of  Christianity.

Amen!    An exclamation used by Fundie cheerleaders to egg on and increase the chatroom disruption of Fundie preachers.  Amen! [CE].

Atheist    A person whose worldview embraces Atheism [noun] [OW]. The natural condition of all humans at birth and prior to indoctrination in or self-invention of Theism. Atheists claim there is no proof for God[s]. "Strong" Atheists claim God does not exist. "Weak" Atheists do not deny the possibility of God[s], or that proof might eventually be discovered. Athiest and Athesit are Fundie synonyms of Atheist [SD].  The word Atheism [CE] derives from the Greek atheos, a = without, theos = God.

B4    Abbreviated affectation of speech used by SNERTs and some adult Fundies [SNERFs] for the normal English word "before."

Babble    Often a form of Fundie expression.  Babble [verb] [OW] consists of repetitive, incoherent and/or undocumented speech.  See also piffle and chanting.

Babel    A city in Shinar [Babylonia], Babel [noun] [OW] is where the building of a Tower of Babel [CE] is held, in the biblical book of Genesis [Gen. 11:1-9 [BLB] ], to have been halted by the confusion of tongues.

Baptists    of numerous conventions [or independents] are the largest group of  Protestant Christians in the U.S.A.  Among them are folks called Southern Baptists [CE], perhaps the most virulent strain of Fundies on Earth.

Believe    To accepting something as true, or possibly true [see True Believer [SD] ] without firm evidence. Fundies confuse the meaning of the word belief [IEP] with the word "knowledge" and assume that because they have a belief [CE] about something, it must be true. In spite of the frequent use of the word by Fundies, only the most educationally advanced among them are able to actually spell the word properly. Many Fundies spell the word as "beleive" or "beleeve".

Bible, Holy    A collection of scripture, from the Greek word Biblia [CE], meaning "books". May include only the Hebrew and Aramaic scriptures of Judaism or may also include the Greek scriptures of Christianity [New Testament [CE]].  Christian bibles vary as to the number of books [Biblical Canon [CE]] they contain and the sequence in which the individual books are presented. The canon of the Coptic Orthodox Church contains the greatest number of books followed in descending order by the canons of the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. The Authorized or King James Version [CE] of the Bible [1611] is still widely used, although more recent discoveries of ancient manuscripts [CE] have enabled translators to create more accurate versions of the Bible [CE]. We provide links to a variety of online Bibles and World Scriptures of several religions.

Born-Again    A Christian doctrine based on several references in the Gospel according to John [Jn. 3:3ff [BLB] ] and also found at 1 Peter 1:23 [BLB].  Only born-again true believers [SD] will gain admission to heaven [except, see Age of Accountability].  This ties in nicely with other Fundie preachments, i.e., only those born-again will have the scales removed from their eyes and be able to understand the true meaning of the scriptures.

Bumper-Sticker Preaching    The mode of preachers without conversational talent, i.e., "Jesus is the Reason for the Season,"  "Jesus: Don't Leave Earth Without Him" and other jingoistic mutterings become a sermon for the day.

C    Abbreviated affectation of speech used by SNERTs and some adult Fundies [SNERFs] for the normal English word "see." Frequently used in the formulation "i c."

CAPS    Normal sub-language of Fundies who arrogantly refuse to adopt the chatroom norm of typing in lowercase. Also known as SHOUTING. Standard practice of SNERTs and SNERFs.

Chanting    The non-stop quoting of Bible verses in a chatroom without discussing them or engaging anyone in dialogue about them.  Also known as room disruption [see TOS].

Christian    "One who believes the New Testament is a divinely inspired book admirably suited to the spiritual needs of his neighbor. One who follows the teachings of Christ in so far as they are not inconsistent with a life of sin." [DD]  Fundies believe only another Fundie can be a Christian.

Conversation    "A fair for the display of the minor mental commodities, each exhibitor being too intent upon the arrangement of his own wares to observe those of his neighbor." [DD]  In online chatrooms, frequently a one-way discussion involving preaching, testimony or chanting.

Creationism    Creation Science [noun] [OW]. First appeared 1979. A falsification of science, espoused by Fundie false witnessers to the truth. Founded [usually] entirely upon the belief that a literal reading of the Hebrew story of Genesis must be believed at all cost. This Pseudoscience [SD] makes a mockery of any objective research regarding the universe and life on planet Earth.

Creator    The presumed higher being found in many religious belief systems. God/Allah of the Hebrew, Greek [Christian] and Arabic [Muslim] scriptures. There are thousands of Gods described by scores of religions. There is not [and probably cannot be] any scientific proof that a creator [noun] [OW] exists.

Darwin, Charles R.    [1809-1882] Co-discover [with A.R. Wallace] and principle exponent of evolution by natural descent. In 1838, while conceptualizing the transmutation of species, he surrendered his previously held Unitarian/Anglican Christian beliefs. His correspondence late in life declared his Agnosticism. His biographers [principally his mature children], with some reluctance, confirmed his lack of faith at death.

Darwin's closing statement that "There is a grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved." appears in the Origin of Species [1st Edition, 1859] [TO] without the words "by the Creator."  The 2nd through 6th editions contain those words, an expression of Enlightenment Deism.

In recent years Fundies have taken to spreading damnable lies, claiming that Darwin recanted his scientific views and returned to a Christian faith. Such acts of false witness are common in online chatrooms and bulletin boards [and in materials published in aid of creationism "education".

Deist    A person whose worldview embraces Deism [noun] [OW] a philosophy of natural religion, emphasizing morality, and, usually, denying interference by a Creator with the laws of the universe. Deism [CE] was a widely-held belief among the founding fathers of the U.S.A. Thomas Paine [1736-1809] [IEP], [author of "Age of Reason"] and Thomas Jefferson were Deists [Jefferson being a "Christian Deist"].  See also English Deism [IEP] and French Deism [IEP].

Deluge    "A notable first experiment in baptism which washed away the sins (and sinners) of the world." [DD]  See Noah's Ark.

Delusion    "The father of a most respectable family, comprising Enthusiasm, Affection, Self-denial, Faith, Hope, Charity and many other goodly sons and daughters." [DD]  Observed regularly among Fundies in chatrooms, evidenced by babble, hypocrisy and method of sharing.

Dictionary    "A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work." [DD]

Dinosaurs in the Bible    One of the many pseudo-science claims of Fundies who argue the falsity of science vs. the pure truth of creationism. This claim is almost always based upon the text of the Hebrew book of Job [Job 40:15 [BLB] ] where "Behemoth" [most likely an elephant] is mentioned. Sometimes, however, reference is made to one or more of the several verses found in Job, Psalms or Isaiah where "Leviathan" [a monster of the primordial sea, borrowed from Aramean [Ugaritic] mythology] is mentioned.

Dirty    1. Contaminated. 2. In need of a shower. An adjective used to describe how Atheists and other non-believers feel after having been unwilling recipients of  Fundie Thumping. [See Sharing]

Discussion    "A method of confirming others in their errors." [DD]  See also Conversation

Drive-by Fundie    A Fundie who enters an Atheist chatroom, posts an inflammatory message and leaves. A typical message from a Drive-by Fundie would be: "GOD LOVES ALL OF U AND HE DIED FOR U LOOSERS SO THAT U WON'T HAVE TO GO 2 HELL, bye."
