he April 12 edition of The Tennessean carried the key to solving the Bosnia crisis.
As usual with this seemingly hands off subject, all the media chose to ignore the
obvious. What is happening in former Yugoslavia transcends the despicable
concept of ethnic cleansing.
We are witnessing an anachronistic human failing -- an old fashioned, full blown 16th century religious war, fought with 20th century weapons. Nevertheless, there may be a simple solution to the senseless slaughter.
The Tennessean carried an AP report from Sarajevo which quoted an incarcerated war criminal named Borislav Herak. He was jailed for raping and murdering Muslim civilians on orders from Bosnian Serb officials. The ramifications of his quoted statement are horrendous and incredible, particularly so soon after the Holocaust. "They told us whoever doesn't wear a cross does not belong to us and should be killed," Herak said in a prison interview. "Twenty-five people is what I know I have killed."
Based on Herak's revelation of the realities of the tragedy, the United Nations should dispense with dropping bombs. In their place they should drop about 10,000 gross of metal crosses. With everyone choosing to wear those sacred religious symbols, the enemy would remain unidentifiable to the murdering zealots.
