t first glance, the campaign for school vouchers seems like a good idea. However,
after careful analysis I am inclined to change my first impression from "laudable" to
"lotta bull." The proponents extend the false hope that the voucher system will
enable parents to simply enroll their children in prestigious private schools like
Montgomery Bell or Harpeth Hall. They refrain from mentioning that such schools maintain their standards of excellence by retaining their right to carefully select their students from affluent families who instill the values of superior academic achievement early in life.
Public schools, on the other hand, may not set up admittance standards. They must try to educate any and all who come to their doors. It is my opinion that the voucher plan is a subterfuge whose purpose is to gradually transform our secular public schools into religiously oriented schools owned and operated by the churches in every community and financed by public tax money.
It is no coincidence that high on the agenda of the zealot religious fundamentalists is the hope and prayer for eradication of our traditional public school system. They strive to replace our public schools with compulsory religious schools espousing the study of scriptural revelations rather than science, humanities, logic and reason.
It is also no coincidence that the overwhelming majority of American Nobel laureates are products of our public schools from kindergarten through high school.
