Who We Are and What we are About

The Portsmouth Chesapeake Obedience Training Club, Inc is a nonprofit organization made up of people who enjoy training their dogs and the companionship of their dogs. We are interested in helping you train your dog to be a well mannered family member and a source of pride.

Portsmouth Chesapeake Obedience Training Club, Inc (PCOTC) is an outgrowth of the Gosport Obedience Training Club which was first formed in 1949. This original club disbanded in 1960 and was reorganized in 1964. The club then adopted a new Constitution and By-laws and a new name which was approved by the American Kennel Club in April 1968. Since 1973 we have been giving AKC (American Kennel Club) licensed Obedience Trials.

Not all our members have pure breed dogs. We also welcome mixed breeds. There are at least two organizations that as a mixed breed owner you may desire to join. They offer the opportunity to compete, and earn titles in obedience, similar to the AKC titles earned and awarded to AKC registered pure bred dogs.

Our members range in interest outside regular obedience training. Several participate in the activities their particular breed was bred for, such as Herding, Field Trials, Lure Coursing, and others. Some venture into other areas. Tracking, Flyball, and Agility just to name a few. Many of our members are actively showing in Obedience Trials, Dog Show, and one or more of the previously mentioned activities.

Classes are held at the National Guard Armory in Portsmouth on Wednesday nights from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
