Art Project: There are 5 elements of design: line, color, shape & texture which we have discussed in previous lessons and the fifth is positive and negative space. Positive space are the primary dominant shapes while the negative space is the surrounding area. This week let's use black and white construction paper. I want you to cut out the exact same things out of the black and white construction paper. For example you could cut out a house with windows or a fish or leaves, etc. Now paste your cut outs on the opposite color construction paper. White cutouts on a whole black sheet of paper and black cutouts on a whole white sheet of construction paper. What does it look like? Can you see a dominant shape and distinguish between positive and negative space? Are you having trouble seeing positive and negative space? If so then use this easy project: Cut out lightening zig-zags from white paper. Once you have them cut out paste them on black paper. Do you see the lightening! That is positive space! Everthing else in the picture is negative space. I'll bet that helped didn't it?! Now can you cut smaller various shaped pieces? I want you to try giving your page balance. What do you think a balanced picture would look like? No, it's not putting it on the scales! A balanced picture is where you have spread out over your canvas or working page the elements in your picture. Practice putting your pieces around the paper and decide where they look best before gluing them down this time. Remember when you look down most streets the houses are in an order and spaced apart. It they were all crushed in together on the same lot the street would not look like a place we would want to live. It's the same with our pictures. If we crush the objects all in one area and do not use our positive and negative space right in the composition it will not be pleasing to our eyes. Optional Art Project: This one would be great for older children. Buy black and white film for the camera. Set up shots or find natural ones to show positive and negative space. Photography can be a great source of expression in art. Science: What causes Thunder and Lightening? Can you find something around the house that you can make the sound of thunder with? How about a pie pan from the kitchen? NO! Not a glass one! ; ) History: Can you find a current event in history about a thunderstorm? Here's a cool page to help you! Thunderstorm information index. Writing: Here is a poem written by a 12th grader about thunder and lightening: Glooming Did you know that there is thunder and lightening in Macbeth act one scene one! Take a read! Now you can try writing your own play or poem or story about thunder and lightening. Return to HOMEPAGE
