The boundaries of Presque Isle County were established in 1840, but the county government was not put into place until 1871. The name, which is French, means "almost an island" and was given because of the narrow peninsula which juts several miles into Lake Huron. There are 72 miles of Lake Huron shore line in the county.
Rogers City is the county seat and principle town, still being the world's largest limestone quarry. Other towns are Posen, Metz, Hawks, Millersburg and Onaway, which were all on the Detroit and Mackinac railroad line, and Belknap, Bruningville, Grace, Hagensville, Huron Beach, Moltke, Ocqueoc, Orchard and Polaski.
Presque Isle County is surrounded by Alpena, Cheboygan and Montmorency Counties.
