This web page is the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I am
on the road to starting over--and not exactly in the most conventional
way. I've traded in my old lungs for a new pair and have gotten a second
chance at breathing and truly living again.
This web site is my own personal documentation of a life before
and after the transplant process. I was on the transplant list for
almost 17 months before receiving "the call" at 2:30 in the
morning on March 20, 2001. I had been waiting for that moment for a long
time and when it finally came, I was calm as a cucumber. I was inpatient
at the hospital at UNC for a CF exacerbation when it happened; for the
next few hours I calmly listened to my Bob Marley CD while the nurses
took tons of blood and I continued to drink my pre-operation GoLytely
cocktail. What a joy that was! Six hours later I was wheeled into the
surgery, confident that I would make it out in better shape than when I
went in.
I'm here to say that miracles do happen. After nine hours of
surgery, my life was changed forever. I went into my transplant
surgery with an 18% lung capacity; after 5 months, I'm 93%. Before
surgery, I was on oxygen 24/7. Afterwards, I didn't need oxygen at
all. It's a whole new world.
This web page is a work in progress. If you want to know more
about me, please feel free to click on the links to the left. I am
working on some more pages about post transplant life, so keep
checking in periodically to see what's new! Thanks.
