About the name Ptarmigan (bird)
(pronounced with a silent P)

PTARMIGAN Lagopus mutus
Common in mountain areas, normally above the tree line. Usually found at higher elevations than Willow Grouse.
Extract from the Birds of Britain.

Ptarmigan bird

“This is the only British bird which is specially adapted to live in snowy conditions and in winter it appears pure white apart from its dark tail. It is now confined to the Scottish Highlands above 600m and if you are lucky up here on ‘Beinn na Caillich’ you may well here its croaky rattle or if you get close enough see it break cover and fly clumsily away”.
Extract from Walking around Broadford (by Paul and Grace Yoxon)
