USA, June 6, 2001

A jury in Los Angeles ordered the US giant tobacco manufacturer, Philip Morris, to pay $ 3 billion in punitive damages and $ 5.5 million in general damages to a 56-year old male lung cancer patient who had started smoking at age 13 and heavily smoked for over 40 years. Philip Morris has concealed the serious dangers of smoking during whole those years.

 

Europe, May 15, 2001

The European Parliament in Brussels approved the toughest ever anti-smoking laws in Europe. The new law should take effect in October 2002 and bans cigarette manufacturers from advertising terms such as 'mild' or 'low tar' to falsely suggest low toxicity, orders clear health warnings on cigarette packs, and builds on a movement for creation of smoke-free zones in countries where it has not been established in public places. The governments are also authorized to demand carrying pictures of scarred lungs and other smoking-induced afflictions on cigarette packs.
