HISTORY OF THE NORWEGIAN
LUNDEHUND
Your teacher today is Siv Kvarnstrom. Siv Kvarnstrom took the time to
write this lesson based on an article written in norwegian by Mrs. Sofie Shönheyder for
the Norsk Kennel Klubb's magazine "Hundesport", August 1980 edition.
Mrs. Sofie Shönheyder is the owner of the HEGGELUNDENS Lundehunds of Norway and
was kind enough to check todays lesson for accuracy.
Takk Sofie
and
Tack Siv.
The Lundehund we see today originates from the Lofoten Islands, more exactly
from the fishing village Måstad on the Værøy Island. It is not possible to
say how long back in time we have to go to find out when the breed first
appeared.
The scientists say that there has been theories that this dog existed as
early as before the last ice age and it survived through the glacial period in the
ice-free zones where it found fish and seabirds to eat.
The literature from the 17th and 18th century teach us that the Lundehund
and catching birds were well known phenomena in the north coast areas of
Norway. The bird catch gave the inhabitants delicious and wholesome food,
but the feathers and down were important as they were much sought after.
Already in the Viking Age these products were shipped from the north of Norway
to commercial towns in Schleswig (Germany). The whim of fashion on the
continent of Europe effected the bird hunting and number of dogs.
Down pillows became fashionable in the 17th and 18th century and at this
time the bird catch increased and so did the number of dogs. Each household
had from about 2 - 3 dogs up to 10 - 12 dogs. Larger establishments had even
more dogs. The utility value of the Lundehund was high at that time and
there are documents that tell us that the price of a Lundehund could be the
same as a good milking cow!
A new method in bird catch - using nets - was the cause that the Lundehund
in the middle of last century lost is value as a working dog. The change to
using nets resulted in that it was not profitable to keep large packs of
dogs that were useful only during shorter periods in the spring and autumn
but had to be fed during the whole year. The dog breeding lost its purpose
and as time went by the number of dogs got smaller and smaller until the
dogs disappeared in several places.
If the fishing village Måstad did not have the location as it had, secluded
and inaccessible in other ways than by boat, we would probably not have had any
purebred specimens left of the original Lundehund.
Maybe the people of Måstad have been particularly proud of these lively and
obligating small dogs because they anyhow took care of them and looked after
that all breeding took place within the local pack.
The Christie family got their first Lundehund in 1939 from Mr. Monrad
Mikalsen from Måstad. A few years earlier the family had read an article
about the Lundehund, written in 1925 by Mr. Sigurd Skaun. The Christie's were
experienced breeders of English Setters. They became interested in the
Lundehund and decided to try to re-establish the breed which had become
alarming few in number. Their work resulted (with the breeding stock from
the north) to prosper to about 60 - 70 dogs.
The lack of vaccine against distemper during the second world war almost made their efforts in vain.
First the disease eradicated all the dogs on Måstad - later on probably all
the dogs in the south and east regions of Norway, but before the epidemic had reached
that far the Christie's with the valuable help from the author Carl Shöyen managed to send
Lundehunds of their own breeding northwards, back to Måstad. These dogs became a new breeding stock.
After having lost her husband, Eleanor Christie at an age of nearly 70 decided once more to breed Lundehunds.
Her decision proved to be about time because on the Værøy Island there were only a
few Lundehunds left. In 1960 puppies were sent from Måstad to Mrs. Christie.
Thanks primarily to Mrs. Christie who started all over again with 5 Lundehunds (some of them
procreative and some barely not) the breed was saved once again. As time went by
other enthusiastic breeders joined her in a prosperous cooperation, so that today in several
places around the world can see original specimens of the original Lundehund breed.
A POEM ABOUT NORWEGIAN
LUNDEHUNDS
Tho following poem was originally written
in Norwegian by Parson Peter Dass between
1647-1708. Reijo Voutilainen read it in a
book on Lundehunds written by Helena Koskentalo
from Nurmo, Finland and E-mailed it to us.
We posted it here for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you Reijo.
A puffin hatches an only egg,
it is hidden in the scree as inside a wall
in the innermost caves of the rocks.
A nest is built so near the other,
that one bites the other's wing and feather
in the crevices,
where they hide.
But the farmers who have a plan
know well to intrude upon those puffins with loot,
and that by trained dogs,
which by formation are supple and small,
so they can creep into the narrowest nook
and pull out live puffins.
When the dog snatches that puffin by the neck,
which lies in front, whose life is for sale,
it begins straightway to set out.
At once the puffin, which sat behind
grasps the foremost by the tail and goes
together,
whereas one is left behind.
By this it happens that a single dog
drags out at once from the darkest ground
twelve, thirteen- even fourteen and more,
and supplies its awaiting master
with so much booty, as he can handle,
whereby his profit may flourish.

THE LATEST SHOW RESULTS
WORLD WINNER DOG SHOW
in Helsinki, Finland, on June 11th - 14th, 1998 (Lundehunds on June 14th)
There were 16 Lundies to be judged by Mr. Rodi Hübental
from Norway (10 males and 6 females).
It was incredible!! First Casper won the champion class (out of four
very handsom champion males) and then he went 2nd best male and was
awarded the CACIB and the title WORLD WINNER 1998. Best male with
certificate and Junior World Winner 1998 went to the junior dog Mar-Lini
Pekko (he is a younger full brother of Raili's Bon-Bon).
Then came the females, first the junior class followed by the
intermediate class and then the open class. There were three females
competing in the champion class. First Isa won the champion class, then
she went on to be the best of the females and awarded the CACIB and the
title WORLD WINNER 1998. Mar-Lini Pekko went Best of Breed and Isa went
Best Opposite Sex!!
Monika Jansson was supporting
and coaching Mary from the ringside.
Mary Said, "I was a little worried about Isa, because she does not like the indoor
dog shows only the outdoor dog shows. Isa does not like the echo and the
noices indoors. However, she was calm when we came to the dog show."

LUNDEHUNDS
FOR ADOPTION WORLDWIDE
(Founded May 18, 1997)
Even Lundehund owners are faced with the
unhappy prospect of give up their faithful companion.
If you are considering becoming a Lundehund owner
make sure your lifestyle matches that of a Lundehund.
Lundehunds require a very special owner that is willing
to accept them with there unique behavioral manners and
there special dietary requirements. The Lundehund is
no ordinary dog and does not act or respond like one.
