FOR SALE: Be a Part of American History
It’s a rarity in today’s home market to find a home with a story. Maybe you’ve looked in other neighborhoods and got bored with the monotony. Maybe you’re fleeing the North Side’s high prices in search of a South Side neighborhood with character and flair. Maybe you love historic properties. Either way, you’re in for a treat. You may have found your new home and your new old neighborhood. Welcome to 11152 South Langley Avenue, a 4 bedroom, 2 ½ bathroom gem in the thriving Historic Pullman District, created as a model town by Pullman’s Palace Car Company in the 1880s. As you’re welcomed to Pullman, take the time to join one of its many clubs: Wine, Bridge, Gardening; Pullman has a club for just about everyone! This home was originally addressed as “138 Fulton” long before the Town of Pullman was annexed by the city of Chicago. Built around 1880, the 1883 City Directory lists a salesman, a clerk and two cabinet makers as residing here. Later Mrs. Anna E. Harrington, M.D. hung her stethoscope here. They’d be blown away by the current owner’s fabulous rehab.

Natural light surrounds you with the abundance of windows in this rare end-unit row home. Light filters in through the original skylights, a necessity before electricity became commonplace. The large eat-in kitchen is connected to a walk-in pantry, the garden-ready back yard, a RARE two-car garage and basement by way of a bright, inviting hallway that adds to the feeling of space present throughout the home. Wood floors (original and well preserved in the living room) add warmth and character. Several items such as a coat rack from the Pullman Factory and two examples of the first electric light fixtures introduced in Pullman homes when electricity replaced gas fixtures are present in this spacious home.

Upstairs you’ll love the large master suite with attached master bath and closets galore. One bedroom’s closet was notably reduced in size by the addition of ductwork while being rehabbed. This ductwork allowed for the addition of central air conditioning – a rarity in a historic home such as this – certainly worth the small sacrifice. Of course there are extra closets nearby and a full basement for any additional storage needs. The addition of the first floor powder room and the 2nd floor master bathroom are a must in today’s home. New, high-quality appliances in the kitchen, beautifully painted walls and trim and an overall attention to detail make this home move-in ready. The 1st floor bedroom could easily be repurposed as a formal dining room with the closet used for storage of table linens, silver and china.

A newly redesigned and rebuilt playlot sits less than a block away. The Metra Commuter Train whisks you downtown quicker than you might expect from the 111th or 115th street stations. The 8:18 a.m. express picks up a short walk from the home and arrives at Millenium Park (Randolph & Michigan) at 8:44 a.m. That’s 26 minutes, the same time it takes to travel downtown from Roscoe Village on the El. The house is located just 3 blocks from I-94, making it convenient for car transportation throughout the area.

The property is listed at 235K.

Feel free to contact your real estate agent, the listing agent, Brian Johnson at 773.715.2205 or the owner, Kristofer Thomsen at 773.928.6400 or kristoferthomsen@sbcglobal.net. (09/19/07)

PULLMAN THORNS FOOTBALL - I am doing research on a semi-pro football team called the Pullman Thorns. They were very popular from around 1912 to about 1925. I am looking for games played, dates, opponents, scores, rosters, attendance, stories about the game, player biographies, etc. Anything would be helpful. I plan to publish an article and would certainly make reference to all sources. I have already exhausted the Chicago Tribune from that era. Thanks. email address: syeroy@wowway.com
