Pavlova's Dog

A Regular Guy's Book of Ballet

My name is Keith Knox, and this is a collection of essays that I wrote with the newsgroup Alt.Arts.Ballet in 1996.

I believe that thousands of committed, amateur ballet lovers must collaborate today to win back what Balanchine, Kirstein, Nureyev and others built in the 60's.  We have all been entertained into a stupor while we starve for involvement.

I enjoy hearing from you. Nothing good is done alone, nothing evil comes from open hearts.

My undying thanks to my great teachers, Dana, Richard, Nicole, Marshall, Miranda, Andrea, Juanita, Amy and the Guys of Truth.

Leap of Faith: Memoirs of a Ballet Guy

"As for the things you don't think you'll ever be able to do, the word 'impossible' isn't in the lexicon of your adolescent peers, why should it be for you? A certain suspension of disbelief comprises the very core of ballet. It restores the sense of invulnerability you had as a teenager."

"The border guards were immediately suspicious when they were handed a crude, cast-iron videocassette instead of passport pictures ("the lighting just isnít the same" one observed). Though the papers said the couple were English, it was obvious even to the untutored eyes of the guards (both of whom had failed their technical exams in the ninth year at the Maryinsky Academy) that they were dancing in Russian (you roll your ars more)."

Marketing Ballet for the 21st Century

"... ballet is mythic narrative. The function of myth is to apply the knowledge of the past to the challenges, transitions and disruptions of the present. Myth dissolves the chains of rationality; any transformation is possible and all truths are eternal. Diaghilev understood this, and we are in an era of change that can only be compared to his in all of history."

"Something I cherish about ballet (and poetry) is the expression of sensuality in an atmosphere of restraint, respect, beauty, and safety. To deny or obsess about either the sensuality or the restraint is wrong."
