Night Stalker

By Sachi Shinguretonu

"Hey, check this out, there's been another attack."

Lilly finished changing in the back room, and came out to join Matt who sat at the counter, intently watching the late night rebroadcast of the 11:00 o'clock news.  "Can you believe it," Matt muttered while he snacked on potato chips, "another young female's been found dead, this time in the Park on 57th st.  Bit on the neck and drained of all her blood, just like the others.  This is like the fifth time in the past two months." Matt smiled up at Lilly. "Think there might be any vampires around?"

"I think you watch too many movies, Matt." she replied sarcastically.  "Well anyway, my shift's over, the mini-mart's all yours."

"Yeah, yeah.  Just get home safely, ok Lilly.  It's 2 in the morning, and I'm telling you, you shouldn't be walking home this late all by yourself.  You know this city's filled with all kind's of weirdoes and psychos."

"Well, they couldn't be any weirder or psychotic then you are, Matt.  See you tomorrow night," and with a wry smile and a quick wave, Lilly stepped out of the 24 hour mini-mart and onto the desolate streets beyond.

She walked several blocks until she came to the corner, where she saw the #66 bus just pulling off.  Lilly ran, but was too late.  Standing at the bus stop, Lilly impatiently glanced at her watch.  "Damn, and it's going to be at least another fifteen minutes before another one arrives."  She stood alone, pacing back and forth, and watched the street.  Not a single vehicle was to be seen that night, and there was an eerie silence.  Suddenly the silence was broken by sound of approaching footsteps, and Lilly turned to see the dark figure of a large man in a trench coat approaching the bus stop.  He came to stand beside her, and pulled a cigarette from his pocket.  As he lit up and proceeded to smoke, Lilly nervously fumbled through her purse and pulled out her book.  She only pretended to read to hide her uncomfortability, for she noticed the man watching her from the corner of her eyes.  He stared at her intently through his glasses, and a chilling feeling shot down her spine.

Lilly had a bad feeling about this guy, so she started to walk across the street to find a subway station.  As she continued down the next block, however, she could hear in the distance the sound of footsteps following behind.  Nervously Lilly began to walk faster, though the footsteps only continued to speed up as well. Lilly turned at the next corner and found herself beginning to run now.  But Lilly knew that she couldn't simply continue to run, for there was no one in sight and no where to run, so as a split second decision she thought to try and hide.  Quickly she fled into an alleyway where she took cover behind a dumpster, hoping to evade the man.  Soon, however, the footsteps caught up and Lilly could see on the ground the dark silhouette of the man in the long coat.

"I know your here, bitch," he called out as Lilly's heart pounded," and I'm going to enjoy seeing your blood...."

Lilly could not hold her fear any longer, and her instincts caused her to make a mad dash for the other end of the alley, the man still in hot pursuit.  The chase continued, and when she emerged on the other end she could see the gates of a cemetery across the street.  Lilly hurried over, desperately climbed the gate, and continued running through the dark graveyard within.  Soon she found herself breathing heavily, and stopped to catch her breath.  Leaning against a tree, she closed her eyes, sure that she must have lost him, for there was nothing but silence.  After a few moments to come back to herself, she peered from behind the tree and surveyed the area.  Nothing.  Lilly took a few steps away, when she suddenly found herself being tackled from behind. She sprawled onto the grass, and found the man on top of her, trying to hold her down.

"Your mine now." he mumbled as he then reached into his coat and produced a long, sharp edged piece of wood.  Lilly's eyes widened, and she gave him a swift knee to his groin.  The man dropped the wooden steak and rolled onto the ground in pain.  Lilly's fear had now turned to fury, and she stood up and grabbed the man by his collar.  Lifting him off the ground, she slammed him against the side of a nearby mausoleum using all of her might.  In total desperation, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a large crucifix which he held up to her, but Lilly merely laughed.

"This is your last resort, a crucifix?  How pathetic.  Well sorry, but I'm an atheist...."

Shocked and filled with terror, the crucifix fell from his hand as he stared into her cold eyes.  Slowly she spoke the last words he'd ever hear.

"Usually I prefer female blood for it's so much sweeter, but for you I'll make an exception...."

And with that she swiftly sank her fangs deeply into his throat and drained him of the scarlet energy that flowed within his veins.  Regardless of his struggling, she could feel his strength begin to wane and within a few more minutes she dropped his motionless body to the ground.  Lilly licked the remaining blood from the side of her mouth as she sat against a headstone.  Filled with satisfaction, she smiled as she looked down upon the man's shriveled and colorless face.

"Vampire hunters, they just never learn."

After straightening out her clothes, Lilly picked up her purse and flew off into the night, her hunger sated once again....
