of 1984 I started an auto repair shop in Fountain Valley, California, specializing in domestic cars, repairing everything from bumper to bumper.
My new found hobby of finding, and restoring, older convertibles began with a '71 Mustang.
I don't think I even drove in a convertible until I was 30 years old, that's why I must have been so excited about them. The restoration came out so spectacular, I drove it for a year before searching for another car.
There was a beater '62 American Convertible at my buddy's Texaco station sitting beside a '62 American sedan, sort of a donor car.
The owner wanted to swap the engines, but it all came to a screeching halt when they learned that the sedan was a flathead and the convertible was an overhead valve Eng.
Because the owners didn't want the expense of putting in a new engine, I stepped in and bought both cars for a few hundred dollars. Thus began a 2 year restoration on the convertible.
I was acquiring lots of Ramblers by then. So many, in fact, someone came up to me and asked, "What are you? Mr.Rambler?"
The name stuck, eventually making its way to my business, my business cards and my website.
I began placing ads in Hemmings Motor news and other old car publications. Nine years later I'm still selling Rambler parts.
In the past few years I have been re-building, renovating, reproducing some parts, searching and buying Rambler parts.
So...that's how I got in this crazy, but fun, business.
I love the old Ramblers mostly because I have seen enough 64 1\2 Mustangs and 55 Chevies to last me a lifetime.
If you have a nice Rambler you truly have something, not something you restored with a screwdriver, catalog, and a checkbook, but a fun (and fine) piece of the American past.
Enjoy it!
