Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus) are a fast swimming mackerel caught along the Atlantic coast of the United States. They range from the Gulf of Mexico to New England. They live from five to eight years, and the females mature by age two. The Spanish Mackerel winters off of the State of Florida, and moves north in early April to the coast of the Carolinas, and arrive in the New York Bight in June as the waters warm up. This species is basically an eastern Atlantic Ocean species, and lives in warm waters. The species has been known to migrate as far north as the Canadian Maritimes. The largest recorded fish caught was a 10 pound, 15 ounce fish caught at Oak Bluff, MA in 1983 according to ASMFC data.
