THE OLD FASHIONED RAT TERRIER

The Rat Terrier is a tremendously versatile little dog. He makes a marvelous companion, excellent hunting dog and all around good companion for both young and old. He has often been described as a "person in fur" and "the dog that everybody wants but few people know about." Their popularity is gradually increasing, but information about the breed has been extremely rare.

When we created our web site there was only one other, that being Herrens Rat Terriers. The goal of this web site was and still is to promote the Rat Terrier by providing adequate information on the breed.

We have several resources that cover many Rat Terrier topics. Our free online monthly newsletter offers articles and tips on the breed. Each month we feature a photo contest and Rat Terrier poll. For further reading, I have written the first book on the Rat Terrier. Rat Terrier A Complete and Reliable Handbook (published by TFH publications).

We have embarked on creating the first printed magazine on the Rat Terrier. Rats Underground is a quarterly magazine that offers in-depth articles, interesting stories, a column by Dennis Eiland on hunting and contests with prizes.

If you have any questions or suggestions please email me at Raterrier@aol.com and I will respond to each email personally.

ORIGIN OF THE RAT TERRIER

His origin dates back to England during the l820's. He was at the time a cross between the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Black and Tan Manchester. The crossing of the two produced a fine, hardy, aggressive little hybrid. He retained the coloring of the Manchester Terrier, and his temperament proved to be superior to either of his parents. He possessed the loyalty of the Fox Terrier combined with a somewhat toned down yet still aggressive nature of the Manchester Terrier. HIS AGGRESSIVE, ENERGETIC WAYS EARNED HIM THE NAME FEIST.

THE RAT TERRIER OF THE 21st CENTURY

The Rat terrier of today is found in three basic sizes, small, medium and large. The small dog weighs typically under l0 pounds, and is developed by selective breeding. The medium sized Rat weights between l0 pounds and 20 pounds. The larger of the Rat Terriers, often referred to as the Decker Giant is in excess of 20 pounds, and can reach weights of 35 pounds or more. This marvelous little dog is used for both hunting and utilitarian purposes. Click here for more photos.

RAT TERRIERS ARE PEDIGREE DOGS

AT THE TURN OF THE l9th. CENTURY various breed clubs were established and formal breed standards written and adopted by various dog registries. The written standard together with the breed club takes the dog from position of being a STRAIN to that of a BREED of its own. The Rat Terrier has been recognized by Universal Kennel Club, Inc. The National Rat Terriers Association and United Kennel Club.

The above information was taken from an article by Linda Hibbard AKA Logan Lane written for Bloodlines Magazine, Published March-April, l999.
