MARKET  REPORT

Updated  AUGUST 2006

________________________________________________

When I began collecting the Liberty Series in 1991, there were few collectors specializing in these "modern" stamps.  The majority of demand came from collectors who were simply filling spaces in their albums. Plate blocks could be found in abundance in face boxes; even sheets could be bought at face, sometimes for less. Postal history could be found in dime boxes (now called dollar boxes).  When asked by dealers what I collected, I would get laughs and funny looks from most when I told them, "I collect the 1954 Liberty Series."  Some dealers were polite enough to say that was a good area to collect, but they did not carry such "new" material because there was no real demand for it.

My, how times have changed!

Today the 1954 Liberty Series is one of the hottest stamp series to specialize in, and the usages of these stamps are highly sought.

There are many rare and unseen Liberty usages, but the three KEY usages sought by Liberty Series specialists are: The 2¢ Jefferson on experimental Silkote paper, the tagged 3¢ Liberty coil on a LOOK origination envelope (Des Moines postmark), and a non-philatelic usage of the $5.00 Hamilton on a commercial envelope (not including BRM). Where possible, this page will report and track sales of these three and any related usages, including available historical data.
