CHAMAI FOR SALE -- The Original Pilothouse Prototype
(See her picture in the Photo Gallery)
OWNER PAUL POST WRITES: "Chamai is up for sale after owning it for 23 years,
since the original buyer who had it custom built from a cruising 30 as hull
# PH3000010476--the first one! Supposedly, he told me Ed Monk, Jr. designed
the coachroof house which is 2 feet longer and 3 inches higher headroom than
the subsequent Pilothouses built from a new deck mold. Due to its large size,
the pilot house contains the galley and a full 6 ft long settee which makes
into a 3/4 double with the table dropped. This frees up the usual galley
space below which I have made into a berth/computer station desk area. The
head is also larger since there's no dinnette below. There's even space below
the chart table for lockers and access to the quarter berth as well as a
cabinet above it which I installed for files and docuements where I used
to have a 110 small apt. fridge.
"I have had it almost as a single owner since the original owner sailed it
up from the factory in Washington to Juneau, sailed it one summer and found
his wife didn't like being on the water. I bought it the following winter/spring
in l978 with 200 hours from the trip up on the engine and had it since.
"There are several surveys, logs for maintenance and extensive ship logs
of over 22 years of active use and living aboard. Hydralic Com Nav autopilot
below decks, Apelco radar and other gear. No collisions ever. One rudder
damaging grounding at year 2 of ownership and an electrical fire which was
professionally rewired better than original, both insurance covered and done
right. Well maintained under difficult Alaska conditions and 8 yrs spent
outside in Puget Sound.
"The only problem is that it needs at least a bottom end rebuild with a new
oil pressure pump on the Perkins 4-108. About a $3000 job up to $6000 if
full rebuild done depending on what it needs after inspection. I would be
willing to reduce my asking price of $40,000 in that amount. It is located
in Sitka Alaska where moorage for it is $400 a year! or about a dollar a
foot! Engine could have a bottom rebuild done just raised up into the pilothouse,
further work would mean removal and crating work
I can be located by e-mail only since I am traveling in an RV in Western
U.S. but I have a person in Sitka caring for the boat and removing the engine
who could show the boat."
