THE KITCHEN CYNICS - The Quiet Ones

THE KITCHEN CYNICS "The Quiet Ones" C60

This is the first I've heard of the Kitchen Cynics, who is apparently one guy named Alan. This lo-fi folky hails from the UK, via the BLISS tape label. At first listen, these songs sound like old English folk tunes. They're originals, and while many of them come across like children's songs, some of them sound vaguely creepy, almost hallucinogenic at times. They all have a quiet, intimate quality that really struck me. Personally, I've never heard anything like it.

On Bennachie gallops along like a children's folk tale, but Now's The Time has a druggy, out-of-sync feel to it. The title track is an intriguing tale with a beautiful melody, and double-tracked vocals. Rocket Songs features vocals from a 4 year old named Matthew. Shadow Cat is a short ditty that ends the album, and happens to be one of my favorites. Bright Young Song (by a dull old man) sounds like something Peter, Paul And Mary might have recorded. For Engelen Alfons is a short, somewhat bizarre sounding instrumental.

The first time I listened to this, the songs sort of all ran together. But, the more I listened to it, the more it's weird, sweet charm grew on me.

I definitely wanna hear more from this chap.
