"Easy AOL Guestbook"
by Rudy Bacon

Here is an easy way to get your guestbook up and running in no time.  Follow the steps below to enjoy
reading your visitors feedback.  Notice: Follow the instructions below at your own risk.

Four pages must be "uploaded" to members.aol.com in order for your guestbook to work.
You may want to print out this page.

The four pages are:

(filenames can be changed later if you prefer)

gbook.htm

myguests.htm

myguests.gbt

thanks.htm

Note:

All pages are set for .htm.  If you use .html, be sure to adjust accordingly.  Just save as .html instead of .htm

You may want to consider downloading AOLpress to create your Guestbook.

AOLpress is available FREE at Keyword: AOLpress

Below you will find links for each of the pages listed above.  Each page will include the HTML text that is needed to make your page work.  Once the page is viewed on your browser and then saved in your AOLpress directory, just go to the Tools menu (While viewing that page in AOLpress) and select Show HTML.  When the HTML text appears, make the required changes in the HTML code. (explained later)

First things first!

Bookmark this page now so you can return to it as needed.

The first step is to Save the four pages listed above to your AOLpress directory.   If you already have these files in your AOLpress directory, and don't want to change them, just substitute the file names.
You can change the name of these pages anytime in the future.

To save the files below, "click the link" and view the page on your browser, go to the File menu and click Save As.  Make sure that you Save directly to AOLpress.  Click OK to Save the page that you are viewing to your AOLpress directory.  Make sure that you Save as .htm or .html accordingly.  After it is saved to AOLpress, the page can be later "modified" as you see fit.

Save the pages below to AOLpress

gbook.htm

(Form Page)

After this page is saved to AOLpress, go to Tools, then click Show HTML.

The only thing you will do on this page is insert your username twice. (do not include @aol.com)

Insert your username where it indicates on the first line that starts with  <FORM.

Again, insert your username where it indicates on the third line that starts with  <INPUT.

After the above changes have been made, click CLOSE, then APPLY changes.

Be sure to SAVE your work.

Note:

This gbook.htm file also includes the myguests.htm and thanks.htm filenames, so if you change their names, they must also be changed within the gbook.htm HTML text.

thanks.htm

(Thank You Page)

You can change these links to .html if needed.  Be sure to SAVE your work.

Once you have all four pages entered in your AOLpress directory and inserted your username in the gbook.htm file as indicated above, you are ready to "upload" them to members.aol.com.

Basic steps for uploading your pages to members.aol.com:

For AOL 3.0  or AOL 4.0

When you are ready to put your new pages on the Internet for everyone to see, just click the INTERNET
globe on the Main AOL 3.0 menu. It will take you to the AOL Internet Connection display. Go to the right side of
this menu and click the Internet Extras box. When the Internet Extras box appears, click FTP. This will take you to
the File Transfer Protocol - FTP box. Click the Right box that says Go to FTP.  Another box will appear asking
you to Select an FTP site. Go down to members.aol.com and click the Connect box. When the Connected to members.aol.com box appears, (showing you how much space you have available) just click OK. This will take
you to the main members.aol.com box that allows you to put your page(s) on the Internet. Click the Upload box and enter the name of the AOLpress file that you want everyone to see. In this case let's say the file name is gbook.htm. Just type in gbook.htm (lower case) in the Remote Filename text box and click Continue. Now in the Upload File box click the Select File button and locate the gbook.htm file in your AOLpress directory. You may have to look in C: to find AOLpress. Once you open the AOLpress file, click gbook.htm and then click Open. The gbook.htm page now appears in the Upload File text box. (You can type in the filename gbook.htm.) The last step is to click the Send button...and that's it! Go back to your Internet browser and view your new page on the Internet.

Extra Help
After you reach your members.aol.com upload page, you can Drag the Heart on the upper right side of the box
up to the Heart on the top menu bar and Drop it there.  It will be placed in your Favorite Places.  When
it comes time for you to upload a file again...just click the Heart on the Top Menu Bar and then
Double click members.aol.com to return to your upload box again.  It's a lot faster.

AOL 4.0

Select My Files on the Top Menu Bar.  Scroll down to My Web Page and click it.
A box called My Place will appear.  Click My FTP Space.  A box that reads Connected to
members.aol.com will appear.  Click the center Upload Icon to upload your pages. Enter the name of your
page in the Remote Filename space. Before you click Continue, check to make sure that your are uploading
into the correct directory.  Also be sure to check off ASCII if you are uploading a .gbt file and Binary if your are
uploading a regular .htm (or .html) page.

Once these pages are uploaded, be sure to create a link on one (or more) of your existing pages
to
gbook.htm and/or myguests.htm.  That's the only way others will be able to find them.  If you decide
that you want to
ERASE all entries on your myguests.htm page, just upload a fresh copy of your
myguests.htm in AOLpress to members.aol.com again.  You'll start over with a clean slate.

If you want to EDIT this page, just view your myguests.htm page on your Internet browser and Save
it "again" in AOLpress as myguests.htm.   All the guestbook entries will stay with the page.  Then go
to AOLpress and edit it.  After it has been edited, upload it again to members.aol.com.  If you prefer, you
can leave this edited version with all your guestbook entries in AOLpress so you can edit and upload it
again as many times as you like to members.aol.com in the future. As soon as you get a "new" guestbook
entry, immediately Save myguests.htm to AOLpress.  This will keep your guestbook entries up to date
and will also Prevent uploading myguests.htm "without" your most recent guestbook entry(s).   If you
accidentally upload an edited version without your most recent guestbook entry, you can go to your
mail box and find that particular entry and resubmit it yourself.

Once again, a reminder that you can redesign any of the pages after you have them up and running.  Change
the fonts, add graphics, animation, backgrounds or sound.  You can also add or remove text boxes, etc.

If all goes right...you will automatically receive an E-Mail when someone submits a comment on your
gbook.htm page.  That should make things a little more interesting.

I am not a computer whiz or anything like it.  I just happened to figure out an easy way to create a guestbook and wanted to share it with you.  I cannot give any technical support or suggestions because I don't have the answers.  I'm hoping that you will be able to get the same results as I did, but without all the headaches.
