SICK BAND
"...the kind of sickness that feels so good to you..."
The Sick Band was headed by Rex Beech, who has been described as a "tormented sick genius". Germinating out of the fertile musical bed of Winter Park High School in the mid '70s, the band was discovered while playing an open mike night at a local bistro. Despite being discovered to have no talent, a performance was soon arranged at Sam's Woodshed Pub where the band immediately captured the audience's attention. Soon more capable musicians were added to the lineup and the group evolved into a ten piece rock and roll burlesque attraction whose exploits remain unchallenged to this day!
Rex coined the term "Beer Bar Land" (used in the marquee up top) to describe all of us people in bands scrounging for gigs and dreaming of making it big when we knew full well the odds were about a million or more to one.
"... there's no limousine rides, down in beer bar land, playin' in a beer bar band..."
The main players in this monstrosity were:
The aforementioned Rex Beech, guitar and tone deaf vocals.
Jay ("DR. SICK") Stine, of no particular musical ability; well suited for lead vocals in this band.
Jeff ("World's Greatest Kazooist") Entrekin, I still remember the gig we did at the Point After when, during our encore, Jeff discovered his prized kazoo missing from the front of the stage. "Souvenir Hungry Fan" was all he could say.
Jim Culotta on drums.
Cosmic Tom Lynch on saxes.
Larry ("Sick Surfer") Huckabay, vocals and sex appeal.
Me (Bird) on bass.
Jim Melvin, cross dressing guitarist.
Other players of note: Brian Athan, Jim Grayson, Jim Mosely, "Sick" Rick, Larry Martini (played bass while I was banished from the group for joining a top 40 rock band), Rollie Walker (consummate player; gave us legitimate status), Bill Fote, David Lee,T.J. Shannon, Ronnie Wood,
