The Provincial Park at Piñalito
The Provincial Park at Piñalito
The park is situated in the department of San Pedro. Its long, thin triangular
shape was determined by the shape of the plot of land that was available
for purchase and is by no means ideal. The total area is 3,796 hectares.
With the exception of one small area, the whole park is covered with virgin
forest through which flow many small streams. These latter are almost the
only unpolluted water in the area, soil erosion having choked almost all
the other watercourses, destroying much of the life in them.
It will be a long and difficult task to survey all the lifeforms living in
the park, but already a substantial list of species has been compiled, including
plants,mammals,
birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. These lists are necessarily incomplete and
will probably be added to substantially as more work is done. In addition,
groups not covered in these lists will be added as information becomes available.
Even in their present form, the lists give an indication of the enormous
diversity of species to be found in one small area of sub-tropical moist
forest.
