Hall Letter of 1944

Hall Letter of 1944

The following letter was addressed to Miss Flora Hall, Scottsburg, Indiana from Sgt. Robert Hall, Company "C", 61st Engineers.  Robert Hall was obviously a nephew, but I have been unable to identify his lineage.

France
Sept. 11th, 1944

Dear Aunt Florrie:

Received your letter last night along with twenty nine others. Most of the letters being from my girl friends that I have met in my travels. It was swell hearing from you. I wrote and told Mom and Dad, that I received a letter from you.

Mom seems to be having trouble with my lady friends. I thought maybe I could discourage a few of them by not writing but evidently I can’t. They kept calling her up on the phone inquiring as to whether she had any word from me or not. Some even called in person. One wrote to her from England. Mom says I take right after my dad, but I’m a little bit better than he, in her estimation. I have a better line of bull. Can you imagine my mother (Ha Ha).

Yes, I’m afraid I have got a bit of the Hall failing. I don’t like to write if I can help it. I do punish myself once in a while and write a heck of a mess of letters such as today.

A.P.O. numbers don’t mean anything over here. I can be a hundred miles away from Horace Franklin. I have never seen any armored artillery outfits so I guess he’s nowhere near me.

Boy it’s getting cold over here in France and me with no overcoat. I’ll freeze if we don’t soon get them. We don’t dare have a fire going or we’ll get bombed out. What a life.

In the short while I have been over here in France I have enough action to last me a lifetime. Working under fire is no cinch. I’ve found that out a long time ago. I’m ready to go home now. I’ve paid my debt. I always said someone has to pay for my training and they have. About three dozen of them. Now I can go home in peace.

How’s everything out there now? Did you ever find out who that was, who had me paged in the movies one night? I’m still curious to know. No one has ever answered that question for me.

Well Aunt Florrie, I have to prepare my bed for the night. It has to be fixed up in a special way because of the cold. Write real soon, will you?

Love,
Bobbie
