Sarah Jane Hollenbeck Stone
1790-

The following was contributed by David Bryan Stone.

Sarah Jane Hollenbeck was born abt. 1790 in Cannan, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Samuel Hollenbeck and Susannah Woodruff, sister of Abraham, Gadd, Mathew, Clarissa, John, Anna, and Betsey. She married Nathaniel Stone of Goshen, CT. and had a daughter Caroline abt 1810, in the fall of 1810 Nathaniel, Sarah, Caroline and Sarah's family headed to Ohio with two team ox teams, and arrived in Hudson, Ohio and took up some land which is now Ravenna Street late in the fall of 1810. Desiring more land than he could secure in Hudson Nathaniel later settled his family on a large tract of land in Streetsboro, Ohio where he cleared land and built a house of tamarack logs (this road today is called "Stone Road").

On a bitter cold night in the winter of 1846 this house was burned to the ground. A son of Mr. Stone barley escaped by jumping from a chamber window. This son called to his sister to follow him was overcome with heat and smoke, she perished in the flames. A few cinders were the only remains of her body, these were gathered into a small box. A funeral service was held in the Congregational Church. Reverend Mr. Lee of Streeetsboro preached a sermon from the text "If a man die, should he live again?" (Job 64:14).

Mr. Stone built a substantial house near the site of the old home and Village tradition says he was heard to remark that if his daughter's life had been spared he should be glad the log home was burned. He was the father of eleven children, ten of which lived to maturity, several of his children are now residents of Hudson.

Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Stone arrived in Hudson, Ohio between 1800 and 1813 according to a publication called "Fifty years and over of Akron and Summit County" by Ex-Sheriff Samuel A. Lane (1892).
