FAQ: Obtaining a Copy of a Social Security Card Application

Effective July 1, 2001, the Social Security Administration has substantially increased their fees. If you know the Social Security Number, ordering a Social Security Card application now costs $27! (The old fee was $7.00.)

Just write a letter to the Social Security Administration. Here's how.

3. How do I find an ancestor's Social Security Number?
First, search the Social Security Death Index. It's available online.

4. What if I can't find my ancestor's Social Security Number?
You can still order the application, but it costs more and takes longer.

5. What kind of information is on the application?
Parent's names, including mother's maiden name. Place and date
of birth. Lots more. This is what one looks like .

6. How long will it take to get the application?
About four to eight weeks on average.
