Aug 29 2004 - Publicity for CSI: NY is ramping up now that the fall season is just around the corner. Today's New York Daily News had a full page article on the new fall seasons, listing CSI: NY as a show "worth seeking and sampling." It also had a brief article on Gary Sinise, for those who might not know him, which stated: WHO: Gary Sinise. WHERE NOW: Partnered with Melina Kanakaredes in CBS' new "CSI: NY," a spinoff of "CSI: Miami" and its mother lode crime drama original "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." WHERE HE'S BEEN: Full-time series television is new to Sinise, whose TV credits include an Emmy for "George Wallace" and a list of high-profile titles such as "Truman," "That Championship Season," and "My Name is Bill W." ANOTHER THING OR TWO: More like a million-and-one things from his work as co-founder of The Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago to his Tony Award-winning role in "The Grapes of Wrath" to movie after movie like "Forrest Gump," "Apollo 13," etc.

Aug 29 2004 - Melina Kanakaredes is profiled briefly in the August 29th US TV Guide, in which she says about her character Stella: "I'm impressed by her diligence, intelligence and strength. I also like that I get a chance to play someone significantly different from what viewers are used to seeing me play." Aug 27 2004 - Check out CBS' Fall Preview show on September 8th at 9:30pm ET. CSI: NY is bound to be covered. Aug 23 2004 - From an Australian paper. 60% of the writing staff for CSI: NY are New Yorkers, and they've also signed on some former NY police officers as technical experts. Each episode will open with an aerial view of the city. "New York City from the air is amazing," Zuiker said. "Danny [Cannon] uses blue-crushed tones to show it off. It's truly beautiful." New York will air on Nine (in Australia) next year. (Source: SMH.com). Aug 20 2004 - Both Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes were profiled on Entertainment Tonight. Sinise told Mary Hart that "I always enjoy the corpses walking around in their robe and slippers. My [three] kids do, too. They come to the set and there will be a corpse with a scar across his face walking around. Just walking in the robe. It kind of takes the sting out of it because it is kind of gruesome." Sinise has lived in Los Angeles since 1987, and his children were part of the reason he took the role, so that he could be home each night for them. "I get to be at home and watch my kids go through this period of their lives on a regular basis," he says. "They like that a lot. They like that they can come to visit me on the set and I can come home at night." Melina brings her two daughters to work. "There is a lovely little courtyard and they have a whole area that is separate. It gives me an opportunity to escape. If the material gets a little too heavy, it's nice to have a little break. Or if there's a light that's broken or a problem with the sound, I can go play for 20 minutes. 'Hi, mommy is here,' and then go back. There are a lot of working mommies that don't have that, so I'm lucky for that." For Melina, working with Gary Sinise gives her a 'family feeling' as Gary is from Chicago, and so is her husband. Sinise enjoys the chemistry between them. "She is great to work with. We are having a blast. She had her own show for five years, she knows the thing and she is a great actress. The chemistry is good between the two of us." Read the full article, and see a video file, at Entertainment Tonight.

Aug 19 2004 - Carmine Giovinazzo said in an August 1st article in the New York Daily News that he was convinced he belonged on CSI: NY after reading for the role of Danny, the officer/scientist on the team. "He's got this intensity, this passion, this New York thing. I come from a family of cops from New York. This was screaming 'this is meant to be. It's not just another job.'" He said waiting for word of getting that role was "very, very nerve-wracking - like being in the bottom of the ninth with two outs in a tie game and a base hit wins it." Aug 02 2004 – A press release at Sports Features lets fans know that Carmine Giovinazzo of CSI: NY is one of many celebrities attending the 46th annual Hollywood Stars game to be held on August 7th at Dodgers Stadium. The game will start at 5:30 p.m.. You can get more details at the link above, or call (323) 224-1301. Aug 02 2004 – New York Newsday covers the music for CSI: NY in a recent article, saying that CBS head honcho Les Moonves chose the song. They ended the article with "At the rate CSI is subdividing, we may eventually have CSI: Milwaukee with "Squeezebox" as a theme." Aug 02 2004 – CSI New York is mentioned briefly in a New York Daily News article on film location scouts. Len Murach, a 34-year-old Manhattan resident, has spent the past 11 years scouting out all sorts of location, from apartment buildings to garbage barges, to find the perfect spot where TV commercials, movies and films can be shot around the city. "You get to see all these phenomenal little gems scattered throughout the city," said Murach. The most popular spots are Times Square, Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge. An article at the Buffalo News discussed the franchise vs. brand remarks that Dick Wolff recently made. "I think clearly he showed that he's a little worried about the "CSI' franchise by those remarks," said Les Moonves. "I think arguably "CSI' is as different as Law & Order is and the various (series). There's also a ratings thing that's going on. "CSI' is going up, the Law & Orders are going down." Another difference between the shows is that L&O is purely procedural, while CSI: NY plans to focus on the lives of the co-leads (played by Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes). Kanakaredes says of Stella (her character): "[Her] Dad was killed, and she found him and never quite got the truth of what happened. What seems to be the common thread of people who I have met in this (forensic) field is it is that closure of finding the truth. The ability to know what exactly happened." Meanwhile, Mac (Sinise) deals with the loss of his wife on 9/11. "And the only woman constant in his life - we're not talking about any physical or sexual relationship - is Stella," said Kanakaredes. "So that parallel of knowing how he works and how he is nursing himself, it's nice to have that sort of balance. They have an unspoken sort of connection where they know when something's off-kilter." Aug 01 2004 - Check out Hype Entertainment for a virtual press kit on Carmine. (Thanks to for the tip) Jul 25 2004 - Melina Kanakaredes is profiled at Ohio.com and despite her extensive filmography, reporters tend to ask her 'glamour' questions, such as how she stays in shape, or favorite makeup tip, and quickly refer to her "stunning head of hair." CSI New York producer Anthony Zuiker says of Melina ... "``She is the most beautiful, talented actress I have ever seen, barring the amazing actresses we already have. She has got just a wonderful spirit.'' Melina was seeking to develop her own show with a friend, and had a deal at CBS, but the deal fell through, and then Les Moonves suggested she join CSI:NY. "It was really a compliment from him to offer this to me because (the show) was his one sure thing,'' said Melina. For Melina (as well as Gary Sinise), she wanted more than just talking about forensic evidence. Zuiker has promised this. He said of Sinise's and Kanakaredes' characters -- "They've worked together for about 8 ½ years. She was born in Queens, she's the oldest of four daughters. Her father died a very traumatic death, and she actually walked in on her father's death at a very young age.'' Meanwhile, Taylor's (Sinise's) wife died in 9/11. Zuiker added that "She [Kanakaredes' character] is the Statue of Liberty, actually the living version of that. She represents the pillar of strength for the unit. And she's the type of woman who is a sexual creature by nature and wears her emotions on her sleeve and doesn't hold anything back. That's an interesting character to write.'' For Melina, she was pleased to work with Zuiker. "I was first and foremost very pleased to see a man who, with the enormous success of all these shows, was humble -- and excited to go to work. Not burned out.'' For Melina, filming the show also had the added perks of going to New York City to shoot some episodes. Melina loves the city, even if she's filming a scene in the pouring rain. Jul 21 2004 - Newsday talks about The Who song used for CSI: NY. Anthony Zuiker's first choice was Behind Blue Eyes, but Leslie Moonves overruled him, choosing "Baby O'Reilly" (known to many as "teenage wasteland"). The Toronto Sun also added that Zuiker said ""We had four songs in contention." When Moonves made the choice, Zuiker said "And I said, 'Yes sir.' I'll be darned, that man is always right." While some feel the lyrics to Baba O'Reilly may not fit a forensic crime series as well as the previous two songs, Zuiker said "We'll choose the appropriate lyrics." Jul 21 2004 - Hill Harper was interviewed at EuroWeb. Hill, an Ivy League-trained actor, said "This one's not supposed to get canceled," in regards to other failed shows (such as CBS's The Handler) he has been on. A friend of his called and said "'You know what Hill, if this one gets cancelled, it means it's your fault.'" Jul 20 2004 - While the Fox/Eads situation is still discussed in the news, CBS is pushing its new fall schedule during a press tour, including CSI: NY. The Globe & Mail (Canada) calls CSI "The franchise that won't die", referring to CSI as "the golden fleece of CBS's prime-time schedule." In regards to slotting CSI: NY up against the venerable Law & Order, Anthony Zuiker said "There's no such thing as competition, just good company. There's room for two successful shows in the same time period." The article points out that in the cut-throat business of entertainment, there are just ratings winners and losers, but suggests that CSI: NY could derail L&O's '15-year stronghold of the Wednesday, 10 p.m., timeslot.' CSI: NY boasts veterans Gary Sinise and Melina Kanaredes, and the cast 'also includes four no-name younger actors as co-workers running about with samples, but Mack and Stella drive the show,' said the article "We start with two central characters and work our way down to the ensemble," said Zuiker. For Sinise, the quality of the show is what enticed him to sign up, citing that "The CSI shows already on TV are closer to feature films in the way they're written and filmed. Even the shooting schedule is more in line with films. It's just quality filmmaking." Kanakaredes, already a veteran of forensic shows (having done Leaving L.A. for ABC some years ago) received a tutorial from chief New York City medical examiner Dr. Charles Hirsch. Kanakaredes said "He was amazing. Dr. Hirsch told me, 'In any crime scene, there's one unbiased witness and that's the decedent. And we as forensic pathologists have the privilege to interview that witness.' . . . The show is about these people who deal with death on a daily basis. They're the ones who help give closure to the family members of crime victims. These guys are heroes." A push for the difference between the CSI shows, besides the locale, is that NYC has different forensic procedures. Zuiker promises a more character-driven series. "We're going to get to know these people; how they do this for a living, and why they do it." Jul 20 2004 – The Palm Beach Post covers the press around CSI: NY, quoting Anthony Zuiker, who said: "I'm a huge Law & Order fan, and there's no such thing as competition, there's just good company. There's room for two successful shows in the same time period, and we're looking forward to it." It also mentioned that Sinise's character, Mack Taylor, 'will continue dealing with the death of his wife in the World Trade Center on 9/11. That kind of backstory got Sinise's creative juices flowing. "I realized this would be a great thing to work on," he [Sinise] says. "It all started making good sense."' Parts of the series' first four episodes will be filmed in NYC, and the crew will return for periodic second unit (exterior) photography. And why was NYC chosen as the locale for the third CSI? "I was very moved by the intestinal fortitude of all New Yorkers after 9/11," Zuiker says. "It's the greatest city in the world. Whenever I go to New York, I laugh, I cry, I learn something new, I get angry because of the traffic. Life changes from block to block, and that's the most interesting thing about New York." Jul 20 2004 – At Zap2it.com Les Moonves said of placing CSI: NY against Law & Order: "When you have a weapon like 'CSI,' we finally have a weapon that can go in there and do some business." As to Dick Wolf's (L&O's creators) comments that CSI is a franchise, L&O is a brand, Moonves replied "I think Dick Wolf is one of the greatest producers in the history of network television, and I think 'Law & Order' is a spectacular show. I think clearly he showed that he's a little worried about the 'CSI' franchise by those remarks." He added "CSI: NY is not going to beat Law & Order. However, CSI: NY is going to do better than we've done in that time period in decades, so it's very exciting to be able to attack that." Jul 19 2004 - Gary Sinise, Melina Kanakaredes, and Carmine Giovinazzo were on hand for the CBS Press Tour this past weekend. Check out the Photo Gallery. Jul 13 2004 - Mediaweek reports that "Dick Wolf Ready For Face Off With CSI: N.Y.". In an article by John Consoli, Dick Wolf says "I think Law & Order has been comfortably winning its time slot for the last seven years. We haven't had any real competition. CSI: NY is real competition. But I think the one thing that has been demonstrated over the past couple of years is that when there's great programming, more people come to the set. That's good for everybody." Wolf also feels his show has an advantage as it is shot in NYC, while CSI's are primarily shot in Los Angeles. "I think that I've always said that New York is the seventh character in Law & Order. It's the additional character in all the shows. I believe in it. I think that it seeps into the film, and I think that may be one of the reasons for the longevity of the show." Jul 07 2004 - Melina Kanakaredes is one of several celebrities joining forces with Eddie Bauer in the "Explore Your Environment Campaign." The actors will appear in a communications campaign that Eddie Bauer is placing in 13 Conde Nast publications, as well as on in their stores, catalogs, and online. The ads will feature testimonials from the performers on their personal efforts to preserve the environment, and calls for the public to join the campaign. The actors will wear Eddie Bauer apparel, including a 100% organic cotton T-shirt that will be sold at Eddie Bauer from July 14-August 25th, with all proceeds benefiting the Environmental Media Association (EMA). The six-page insert featuring Melina (and other performers) will appear in September issues of Vogue, Glamour, Self, GQ, Lucky, Details, Cargo, Vanity Fair, Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Conde Naste Traveler, Wired and The New Yorker. Jul 07 2004 – Actor Ed Harris was in Bangor, Maine yesterday, discussing his film Pollock, as well as his ties to Stephen King movies. During his career he's portrayed a lot of military roles, which asked 'what it's like to be so associated with the military in today's climate.' He responded "I don't know how much I am. I have played a lot of those roles due to my appearance. Still, it's a good question. I have a lot of respect for soldiers and for those who have to go to war. The current climate is tough. You can be against the war in Iraq, but that doesn't mean you're against the military. I have a good friend, [the actor] Gary Sinise, who is involved in the USO. We don't share the same politics, but I have a lot of respect for his involvement in the organization. Most of the men and women in the military are young, they're in a difficult situation, and I have empathy for their families. On occasion, I speak out politically to certain groups." Read the full article at Bangor Daily News. Jul 02 2004 - Melina Kanakaredes appears in the documentary It's Greece to Me!, which airs on Milwaukee public television on July 11th, and KTEH San Jose on July 28th. Three young Greek-Americans join Melina on a journey to Greece, which covers ancient and modern Olympics sites, Athens, and the island of Sanorini. (Thanks to Patty for the tip) Jul 01 2004 - Zap2it.com describes Eddie Cahill's character, Det. Don Flack, as "a second generation officer with a quick wit and mad forensic skills. CBS publicity boasts that Cahill's character isn't know for "having patience with potential suspects." Jul 01 2004 - The Toronto Star reported that Gary Sinise has spent a few days 'down time' at the Camelback Inn Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. He met with and signed autographs for fans at the Cantrell Gym, saying, "I have been traveling around the world and the U.S. It is really my honor to be out here to say thank you to you folks and to spend a little time with you." Many knew Sinise from his Forrest Gump portrayal of double-amputee Lt. Dan. 7-year-old Jenna Dalton asked Sinise how they were able to cut off his legs for the movie, to which Sinise replied. "Well, I had to sit on my legs a lot and they used a computer to erase them." Sinise even wrote a get-out-of-class excuse for Spc. Sabrina Slade, who had a class at the same time as his concert. (Thanks to the gsinise@yahoogroups.com for the tip) Jun 29 2004 - An article covering Operation Iraqi Children mentioned how Gary Sinise helped assemble the grass-roots effort to assist in the rebuilding of 1,500 schools in Iraq. One Iraqi who was on hand for distribution of the first batch of school kits (containing basic items such as pencils, notebook paper, scissors, rulers and colored pencils -- crayons melt in the Iraqi heat) said that the schoolchildren's parents "will not forget this day and the kids will remember the soldiers who help Iraqi children." Children who are helping send kits are also sending along a stuffed animal or toy as well, which get shipped via Federal Express. So far more than 1,000 boxes have been received from church and service groups from 37 different states. Sinise said, "It is a beautiful way to begin a relationship with the future leaders of Iraq. They have been forgotten for so long. Now there is a chance for them." Read the full story at the Catholic News Service. (Thanks to Ben for the tip) Jun 12 2004 - SilverBulletComics reports that Max Allan Collins has signed to write a comic miniseries for CSI: NY. Jeff Mariotte, editor-in-chief of IDW Publishing, said "CSI has been a linchpin of our publishing program from the beginning. CSI: NY looks like a terrific addition to the line-up, and we look forward to telling new adventures of Mac Taylor, Stella Bonasera and their team." Writer Collins and forensics researcher Matt Clemens are already "cooking up grisly fare for this new team of CSIs." Jun 10 2004 - CSI: NY will begin production on its first season on July 8th, filming much of the first episode in New York City. Jun 10 2004 - Gary Sinise was on June 8th Good Day Live news program, talking about CSI: NY as well as Operation Iraqi Children. Gary wore a gray sports jacket and black shirt. He said he'd never thought about doing a TV series before, despite offers, but when CSI: NY was offered, he sat down with Anthony Zuiker and he thought "well, this guy's got some great energy and great ideas...." He agreed with a host that CSI is "gruesome. I walked into the set when we shot this thing the first time and there were corpses everywhere and I thought 'what did I get myself into? This is gruesome' but it's very interesting material actually and the writing is very, very good." The topic changed to Operation Iraqi Children, and they showed some footage as he talked about his involvement with veterans group, and the USO. He spoke of the positive stories from Iraq - with the soldiers and the children - and it was when he and his kids did a drive at his school (who sent over 25 boxes of supplies), that he created the website with author Laura Hillenbrand to create Operation Iraqi Children. They're partnered with "some great humanitarian organizations" who saw him promoting the program. He does feel that news coverage of Iraq is unbalanced, as he's in touch with people who work directly with the Iraqi who are frustrated by the coverage of basically only bad news. After a commercial break, the main host asked Gary's involvement... was it political or that he just saw children in need? "Who cares about my politics? That's not the important thing here," replied Sinise. "I support the soldiers. Every president has to send our soldiers somewhere, right? No matter who they are. So no matter who's in the White House, we have volunteers who are willing to volunteer to go into harm's way in defense of the country. I went to Iraq to support the troops, and when I went there, I saw what they were doing besides getting shot at and blown up. They took me out to the school that they'd rebuilt, so I thought, how can I help support these folks?' So he got the idea of sending school supplies. "What's important is that we do the best we can to be successful. What's going to be better for the world, if we fail or succeed? Well, I think it's going to be better for the United States, and the Iraqis, and the world if we have a successful effort there in some way." When Gary was asked if his career had suffered in any measure due to his support, Gary said he supported the troops, and that lots of people do support but the troops, "but are really mad about everything else." He said that people on the right and the left were involved in the operation, as it's about the children, not about politics. It's a no-brainer. Jun 10 2004 - Gary Sinise was on May 30th Dennis Miller Show. "Truly one of the nicest men I've met," said Miller as he introduced Gary on the show. They went directly to Operation Iraqi Children, and much of what he said is covered in the Good Day Live description above. Gary did mention that the 25 boxes of supplies were shipped to his contact at Camp Anacanda, just north of Baghdad, helped to distribute the supplies. Gary mentioned that he has "tons of images" (positive ones) but all we've seen are the negatives ones (especially the prison scandal). Dennis brought up the Captain Dan image, but Gary corrected him "It's Lt. Dan [from Forrest Gump]. I just demoted myself," he laughed. "It's absolutely true. When I go on the trips for the troops, they all scream 'Lt. Dan' at me and now... I have a band that I played in for quite a while... the Lt. Dan Band. We just got back from Singapore, Korea, Diego Garcia ["a very small Gilligan-type Island down in the middle of the Indian Ocean"). Dennis brought up CSI: NY. Gary talked briefly about his cast members, Melina Kanakaredes ('wonderful, wonderful actress"). "We've got a great cast, Anthony Zuiker, who created the original series, is our showrunner." They'll premiere in October. "It's a very well-done show," said Sinise. Jun 09 2004 - Melina Kanakaredes was on a repeat of a Craig Kilborn Show (which originally aired right before the CSI: NY pilot). She told about how when she was in eighth grade, she won a science fair award for her study of hair shampoo. And how she won the Miss Columbus (Ohio) beauty competition, but was only first runner-up in the Miss Ohio contest, which didn't bother her at all. From there she went into acting, and her first job was a commercial for a contraceptive. Fortunately, for Melina, Craig was unable to locate a tape of that commercial. She also spoke of how when she went to Greece about a year ago, the paparazzi followed her everywhere as she's rather big in Greece. After the commercial break, she did the "5 questions" with Craig, scoring 5 out of 5 (she was asked 1) what performer wasn't Greek, 2) if any actor had a longer name than hers (Schwarzenneger), 3) how episodes into CSI: NY would it be before a stripper was killed (she guessed that Craig guessed 2, and was correct), 4) how to pronounce gyro, and 5) list five items you can buy off a hot dog vendor cart in NYC. Jun 04 2004 - The Calgary Sun ran a story on CTV's American shopping spree," in which the Canadian network purchased several U.S. shows, most notably CSI: NY, among others, to air on the fall season. Jun 08 2004 - Gary Sinise appeared on today's Good Day Live, and Melina Kanakaredes is appearing on the Craig Kilborn Show tonight (well, early tomorrow a.m.). If all goes well, I'll have a report tomorrow on both shows. Jun 04 2004 - The http://www.sinisefans.org/ fan site has a newsletter up here. Check it out! Jun 03 2004 - Country station 94 WKKJ has an article on Gary Sinise and Operation Iraqi Children, as well as a photo. Click on the link to read the entire article. Jun 03 2004 - TV critic Karla Peterson said in a recent article ... "CBS' upcoming CSI: NY has already paid its debt to society by bringing Gary Sinise into our living rooms. When the 49-year-old Sinise takes on the role of crime-scene investigator in the fall, the man who played the tortured Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump will be stepping into one of the cushiest franchises in television. He will also be joining the ranks of capital-"A" actors whose finely honed chops cut through the layers of intellectual flab thrust upon lazy viewers by even lazier TV shows." The article complains about reality TV, etc., and adds that "watching smart performers like Sinise power through challenging scripts is the TV equivalent of one heart-pounding session at the gym. And God knows, we need it." Read the full article at SanDiego.com. Jun 03 2004 - About 160 fifth graders at the Fox River Grove Middle School participated in Community Day, for doing charitable work, and spent that time gathering up school supplies for Operation Iraqi Children, co-founded by Gary Sinise. The children sent along school supplies, as well as stuffed animals. "They can be a kid and just play with it," said one 13-year-old. Donations from the school staff as well as the community will pay the shipping from Kansas to Iraq. Read the full story at the Northwest Herald. You can read another brief article at Contact Music. Jun 01 2004 - Gary Sinise is interviewed (both print and sound) at Voice of America. Taking the lead role on CSI: NY. "...When I was presented with the opportunity to do CSI I said, 'Do I want to settle into one character for what could be a long period of time if the show is a hit?' And that was a tough decision. But it's a very good deal. And it's a wonderful opportunity for me to be at home with my kids and work --[have] steady work, rather than having to worry a lot about the next movie job and those movie offers that aren't coming in. Now I know that I have a job and I'm going to be there and let's see what happens." He also points out that acting is, unfortunately, rapidly becoming a young person's game. When you get older, the parts aren't as readily available. He spoke briefly of his character, Detective Mac Taylor, who his an ex-military man "whose wife was tragically killed in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11 [2001]. So, we'll be exploring various elements of the character through some of that." Click on the URL above for more details. Jun 01 2004 - In an article on advertising agencies and the media, an article said "CBS' CSI: NY and NBC's Law & Order: Trial by Jury are without a doubt the gold standard for media buyers. They say there is no safer bet than the brand expansions of CSI and Law & Order. Read the full story at Variety.
