What Is A Cappella Music?

The term a cappella is Latin for "in the manner of the church" (or chapel or choir). Hence the reference is to the way the early church used to do things. In today’s musical society its understood application is to music that is not accompanied by instruments. The musical world has been fascinated by this type of music for generations. Some of the more recent uses of this style of music has been from Barbershop harmonies to the Doo-Wop music of the street-corner singer or to emphasize the exceptional vocal blends of modern popular groups. Several years ago, the Country group Southern Pacific included an a cappella version of "I Go To Pieces" on their album County Line while the group Rockappella can be heard daily in their tribute to Carmen Sandiego on the PBS show "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego". The popularity of a cappella music is made manifest by the number of groups performing this type of music. A trip to the A Cappella Web Directory reveals dozens of links.

Today’s enjoyment of a cappella music, though, might not be any more intense than in the way it is used to bring honor and glory to God. Some religious groups, like many of the Churches of Christ, use it as the only music in their worship services. Groups, like Revival, use it as their way to tell the message of what God has done for them. The historical research of the music of the Christian church indicates a close connection between music, the unity of the church and a praise of God. As the term indicates, it was the "manner of the church" to sing in this way and fulfill the words of the apostle Paul, "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, sing with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16) and "… speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all thing in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father …" (Ephesians 5:19-20) (New American Standard Bible). The rich and pure harmonies of a cappella bring a special relationship between the singer, listener and God that is uninterrupted by an instrument, which is the creation of man. The only tools used to praise God are the heart touched by His message and the voice; God’s own instrument of praise.

All of Revival’s music is vocally produced and heart-felt. In a world in which pomp often overshadows substance, we hope you enjoy the purity and simplicity of the message of God produced through the heart and soul of His ministers!
