Chapter 1
The sisters are at the manor having breakfast, enjoying a peaceable sisterly chat. "So, Piper," Prue began, "what are you doing on your days off?"
Clearing her throat, Piper responds, "Leo and I are going to a little beach resort up the coast."
"I wish I could go!" responds Phoebe.
"Sorry, Pheebs. It's just going to be a little romantic getaway for Leo and me."
"I know. I know." Whined Phoebe, pouting. "I just wish that I had someone to go away with."
Prue chimes in with, "What happened to Landon? I thought you were madly in lust with him."
"I was until I found out he's dating someone else." A dejected Phoebe replied.
"Oh, honey. I'm sorry!" Piper said.
"Me too!" Prue said while putting an arm around Phoebe, giving her a consoling hug.
Trying to be cheerful, Prue says, "Well, it looks like it's just going to be you and me this weekend, kid. Why don't we rent some movies this afternoon and have a two day long movie marathon?"
Perking up, Phoebe says, "That sounds like fun, Prue. Let's do it!"
Piper got up and said, "I've got to go to the club for a while. I'll talk to you guys later."
"Bye" Prue and Phoebe said at the same time.
Prue gets up telling Phoebe that she will be down in the darkroom developing some pictures. Phoebe goes up to her room to study.
Chapter 2
At P3 Piper is standing behind the bar restocking when a man suddenly appears behind Her trapping her arms with one hand and holding a cloth saturated with chloroform over her mouth and nose with his other hand. Piper struggles briefly, but quickly succumbs to the drug. She passes out in the man's arms.
At the same time as the attack on Piper, the same thing is happening to Prue. She too quickly becomes a victim to the drug and passes out.
A short time later, Phoebe is standing in her room when both men appear behind her. Sensing their presence, she turns around and side kicks the one holding the cloth. This gives the second guy time to slam the club he is holding down onto Phoebe's head. She slumps to the floor unconscious.
Some time later, Prue wakes up. Still feeling very groggy, she looks around immediately seeing her sisters in the room. They are sitting next to her. Piper is on her left and Phoebe is on the other side of Piper. Both of her sisters are still unconscious. Immediately Prue tries to stand up and check on them. However, she can't get up because her wrists and ankles are strapped to the chair she is sitting in. Looking over she sees that both Phoebe and Piper are similarly bound. She tries to channel her power through her eyes, but nothing happens. She then tries to astral project. When that fails she realizes that her powers will not work.
"Piper, Phoebe, wake up!!" Prue whispers frantically. No response. She tries again, a little louder, "Piper, Piper, wake up!" Piper starts to lift her head. "That's it, Piper, wake up."
Trying to get up, Piper realizes that she can't. "What's going on?" she queries.
"I don't know. Someone appeared behind me and drugged me. I think, apparently he got you and Phoebe as well."
Piper slowly recovered her senses, feeling slightly nauseous. She looked over at Phoebe. "Prue, she's bleeding! They must have hit her."
"Yes, I noticed the dried blood on her head," Prue said. "She must have tried to fight them."
"What is this place?" Piper asked. Looking at the room they were in she noticed that besides the three chairs she and her sisters were in the room was bare with the exception of a pole in the center of the room. "I've got a bad feeling about this, Prue."
"I know. My powers are useless, too."
"What?!!" Piper asked with panic in her voice.
"I can't use my powers. They don't work."
"Oh, this is bad! This is really bad!" Piper exclaimed.
About that time Phoebe groaned, "Whoa, killer headache."
"Phoebe! Take it easy. Don't move." Piper stated.
"Where are we?" Phoebe queried.
"I don't know," Prue began. "We seem to be stuck in a room, tied to our chairs, and to top it all off, our powers don't seem to work!"
As she finished the two guys that had grabbed them plus a third man appeared in the room. It was immediately obvious that the new guy was the leader and the two other guys were his lackeys. The leader stepped toward them and said, "Hello ladies, welcome to my lair."
"Who are you and what do you want?" Prue, the leader of her group asked.
"My, my, my. Always the forceful one, aren't you, Prue?" the leader said, shaking his head.
"Like she said, who are you?" Phoebe demanded.
"Ah, Phoebe. Almost, but not quite, as demanding as your oldest sister." Then he looked at Piper. "Then there's Piper. The quiet one. That is until someone messes with her sisters." Walking over he takes Piper's chin in his hand, "Isn't that right, Piper dear?"
Piper jerks her head away and glares at him. "Let us go!"
Shaking his head, he states, "I can't do that just yet." Looking at all three of them he says, "You are all so lovely it's almost a shame to go through with my little plan."
Prue says, "Once again I will repeat myself, who are you and what do you want?"
"I am a warlock, of course. For the time being you may call me Master."
"In your dreams!" Phoebe says.
"Ah, but you will, Phoebe, you will. I promise you that!" Starting to pace in front of the three sisters he says, "As to what I want...your powers, of course. What else would I want?" Getting a far away look in his eyes, he continues, "I must leave you for a few minutes while I make sure these two know exactly how my plan is to proceed. Ladies, please excuse us." With that the three warlocks disappeared.
"Plan? What plan?" asks Piper, struggling to break her bonds, as are both Phoebe and Prue.
"Yeah, why doesn't he just kill us like every other warlock has tried to do?" asks Phoebe.
"I don't know what his game is, but we need to get out of here now!" Prue exclaims.
"I know but how, Prue?" Phoebe asks. "These leather cuffs are secured very well around our wrists and ankles."
"I know, Pheebs, but we have to try!"
Piper shakes her head and repeats, "This is bad! This is really bad!!"
Prue begins, "Piper, we have..." trailing off when the three warlocks blink back in.
"Ladies, I trust you didn't miss us too much in the short amount of time that we were gone. Good news! All is set and we can now begin my plan."
"What plan?" Phoebe asks.
"I am glad you asked that, Phoebe. You see I have been working on my plan for some time now. I would be glad to share it with you." Pacing in front of the sisters, he continues, "I have watched you three over the past few years, even before you had your powers. I have watched warlock after warlock, demon after demon be vanquished by you. Rex and Hannah came the closest to defeating you. But they made a grave error. They forced you to give them your powers. I won't make that mistake. By the time my plan has run it's course, you will willingly give your powers to me." Stopping and stroking his chin, he continued, "You see, I am going to give you both physical and, here's the key, psychological pain. You will be eating out of my hands before 6 months have passed. And yes, Phoebe, you will call me Master before we are through today."
"What do you mean? What is going to happen today?" Prue asked.
Walking in front of Prue, he began, "Well, the first step of the plan is, of course, pain. There will be physical pain for one of you today and emotional pain for the other two. Emotional pain because you will have to watch one of your sisters being beaten and tortured."
"No!! You will not beat my sisters!" Prue said. "Pick me if you are really going to do this!"
"No, Prue!!" both Piper and Phoebe said at the same time.
The warlock looked at all three of them and said, "It doesn't work like that. You don't get to pick which one of you will be tortured today. I do. But, you see, that was a big dilemma for me. I wanted to be very careful and pick the sister that would do the most damage."
Walking in front of Prue, he said, "When I debated on you I had to consider that you are proud, determined, and very protective of your sisters. I knew you would be the first to volunteer to be tortured. To protect your sisters, of course. While it is tempting to choose you, because you are the leader of the power of three, I think it would do more harm to you if you had to watch me torture one of your sisters. No, Prue, you will not be the one tied to the post today."
Walking in front of Phoebe, he began, "You would make a good choice, Phoebe. The youngest one. The other two are the most protective of you. You would be an extraordinary challenge to break. But, I fear that you would not be affected by physical pain as much as you will be by psychological pain. Therefore, today is not going to be your day to be tied to the post."
Walking to stand in front of Piper, the warlock continued, "Ah Piper, you are the obvious choice. You will experience both the physical and the psychological pain of this. In addition, you are the one that both of your sisters love the most. Therefore, by choosing you, I will be inflicting the greatest amount of emotional pain on the other two. Also, you are the rock of this family. You are the one that supports both of your sisters unconditionally. While you are recovering from your injuries, your sisters will be further weakened." The warlock waves his hand and Piper's bonds magically disappear. Holding his hand out to her, he asks, "Shall we begin?"
Piper slaps his hand away and says, "Go to hell!"
The warlock backhands her and indicates to his goons to get her. The goons grab her and drag her to the post. They back her up to the post securing her arms behind the post. They then place a strap over her chest, under her arms, and around the pole. The strap will ensure that she remains upright even if her legs give out during the torture session.
"No!! You asshole! Let her go! Take me instead!" Prue yells.
"I will call you Master, just let her go!" Phoebe says.
"Ladies, ladies, please let me go over some ground rules for you. Number one, your powers do not work in this room, so save yourselves the effort. Number two, she won't die, but she will suffer intense pain. Number three, you have to watch. If you don't Piper's pain will increase. Number four, her white lighter won't be able to heal her. I have made sure of that. She will have to go through all the pain that comes with the healing process. Number five, I will return to repeat this session once Piper is completely healed. I may not necessarily pick her next time, but then again, I might."
"You bastard! I promise that we will vanquish you. And when we do it will be painful!" Prue said vehemently.
"That's right, you son of a bitch! You won't even begin to comprehend the amount of pain we will inflict on you!" Phoebe added.
"Oh, one more thing, ladies. All you have to do is say the word when you are ready to give up your powers. All of Piper's pain will end when you do." The warlock indicated for his goons to begin.
The biggest one walked over to Piper and whispered in her ear, "The boss won't let me have you this time, but he has promised to let me rape you next time." Piper lets out a disgusted sigh, which quickly turns into a scream as the goon bites her shoulder, drawing blood. He then steps back and starts slamming his fists into Piper's stomach and face. She is not screaming but is making guttural noises. It's the most she can do while this attack is occurring.
Phoebe and Prue are crying. They can't stand to see Piper treated this way. Piper is the gentlest person that they know. She would go out of her way to keep from hurting anyone and to see her treated like this was especially cruel. After a few minutes the lackey finally stops. It seemed liked it had lasted an eternity to Prue and Phoebe.
The leader started talking, "Prue, did you think that I wouldn't notice? You closed your eyes and didn't watch the last few seconds. You know what that means." He motioned to the second goon. Both Phoebe and Prue look over at him. He is holding a particularly vicious looking knife. As he advances toward Piper, both Prue and Phoebe yell, "No!! Leave her alone!!" Prue continues, "I'm sorry. I'll watch. Please don't do this!!" Tears are streaming down her face.
Piper is barely conscious after the beating and is not aware of what is going on. The goon grabs Piper's hair forcing her head back. Piper is breathing fast and there are tears mixed with blood running down her face. The minion places the knife on Piper's right cheek. The leader starts talking, "You see, the key to torture is to draw it out. Lengthen it. This prolongs the agony. Now watch as he pierces her skin and slowly, oh so slowly, draws the blade down her face." The minion does as the leader describes. Piper lets out a blood-curdling scream. Prue and Phoebe feel utterly helpless and defeated as they are forced to watch.
Phoebe says, "I'll call you Master! Please, just stop!"
Meanwhile, the minion walks to the other side of Piper and repeats the same punishment as before. Piper screams once again. The lackey steps away. Piper, by now, is breathing in huge gulps still trying to recover from the beating and this new assault.
Prue looks at Piper and says, "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
The leader says, "Now we will begin the second phase of the plan."
The smaller goon walks up to Piper. He has some sort of device in his hand. He touches Piper with it and her entire body convulses. Phoebe and Prue can hear the electricity crackle as it goes through Piper's body. Where the device is touching Piper, her skin is burning with small tendrils of smoke cascading upwards. He repeats this process four times before Piper passes out.
There is nothing Phoebe or Prue can do. They feel so useless and despondent. The warlock knew what he was doing when he chose Piper. Neither one of her sisters can stand it any longer. Finally, after glancing at each other, Prue says, "Enough! She can't take any more!"
The warlock says, "Are you saying that you are willing to give up your powers?"
Prue starts to nod her head when she hears Piper say, "No! Don't you dare! We are not giving up our powers!" This seems to take all her energy as her head once again slumps down to her chest.
The warlock looks at the three of them, "So be it!" He motions to the big lackey. The goon goes back over to Piper and once again starts beating her. Only this time he is even more brutal than before.
As the beating is taking place, the leader produces a cell phone and a piece of paper. He lays them both on the floor near Prue's feet. "You will need these once he is done if she is to survive."
The big guy stops the beating, leans over to Piper's ear, and whispers, "Remember that I get to have my kind of fun with you next time." He then delivers one final, tremendous blow to Piper's ribs. Prue and Phoebe hear the sickening sound of bones breaking.
The three warlocks blink out and the girls bonds magically disappear. Piper slumps to the floor. Phoebe and Prue rush over to her. Phoebe cradles Piper's head in her lap. "Piper, oh my God! Honey, can you hear me?"
Piper looks up at Phoebe. Her eyes are glazed with pain. "Phoebe, is that you? Is it over?" At least that is what she tries to say. What actually comes out doesn't sound intelligible.
Looking up at Prue, Phoebe says, "What did she say? Oh God, Prue, I think her jaw is broken."
Prue says, "Let me call for help. Just stay with her!" Prue crawls over to the phone. She picks that up and looks at the piece of paper. Just as she suspected it was the address to where they were. She dials 911. "Help! My sister has been beaten! Please hurry!" She gives them the address that is on the paper.
Prue crawls back over to Piper and tells her, "It's going to be alright. I promise, Piper! We'll get you to the hospital and they will make all the pain go away."
Right then Piper coughed and blood came out of her mouth. Panicking, Phoebe looks at Prue, "What do we do? What's happening?"
Prue shrugs her shoulders, "I don't know! Maybe one of her ribs pierced a lung."
About that time they could hear sirens get close. "Oh thank God! The ambulance is here! Did you here that, Piper? Help is here now." But Piper was unconscious, her breathing very shallow.
Chapter 3
Prue and Phoebe were in an ER cubicle. Prue sitting on a chair and Phoebe on the bed, getting her head laceration sutured. The doctor, finishing up, was explaining what Phoebe needed to do for wound care. "Make sure you keep this clean and dry. And no strenuous activities for you for the next few days. Make an appointment with your family doctor in about 10 days to have the stitches removed. Do you have any questions?"
"Yes," Phoebe starts, "how is my sister?"
"I don't know. I'm not the doctor treating her. But I will try to find out for you. In the mean time, the police need to talk to you guys about what happened." Getting up he motioned to the officers waiting outside of the cubicle. "We're done in here. You guys can come in now."
Two police officers walk in as the doctor leaves. The girls look at each other anxiously. "Hello, I am Officer Hunt and this is Officer Delacroix." the first guy said while indicating the second officer.
"I understand that you have been through a lot today, but we need to get statements from you on what happened." Officer Hunt continued.
"Let's start with the basics." Officer Delacroix said. "I have your names as Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell. Is this correct?"
Prue nodded her head, "Yes, I am Prue and she is Phoebe."
"So, Piper is the one that was assaulted?" Officer Hunt asked.
"Yes." Phoebe said.
"Okay, Prue, why don't you tell us what happened."
"Well, we were all abducted. Piper and I were chloroformed and Phoebe was knocked out. We woke up in this room, tied to chairs. There were three guys there. They had apparently been watching us for a while. They wanted to torture us and picked Piper to be first." At this point Prue broke down in tears. Phoebe hopped down off of the bed and hugged Prue.
"I know this is difficult for you. But..." Officer Delacroix started, but was interrupted by Phoebe.
"How can you possibly know how difficult this is for us? My sister is in this hospital fighting for her life! We had to watch while these monsters did that to her. We couldn't do anything to help her or to stop them. Piper didn't deserve what they did to her! Don't tell us that you know how difficult this is for us!! There is no way you can possibly know!!" Phoebe stood while delivering her speech, filled with righteous indignation. Prue stood up to try and comfort her.
"Ladies, I didn't mean to upset you. Believe it or not, we only want to help you." Officer Delecroix said.
"Let's cut to the chase," Prue tried to pull herself together. "We don't know who did this to us. We don't know why they did it. And we will only talk to Inspector Darryl Morris."
"We only have a few more questions." Officer Hunt said.
"My sister is right. We will only talk to Inspector Morris. Now please leave us alone." Phoebe stated.
The officers look at each other then get up to leave. "We will contact Inspector Morris. I am sure he will be down as soon as he can." Officer Hunt said. Both officers left the cubicle.
Prue held out her arms for Phoebe, hugging her tight, when she came to her. "How are you feeling, Pheebs?"
"My head hurts me but my heart is killing me. You?"
"I can't believe that this is happening! I mean poor Piper! What she had to go through and what she will have to go through! That son of a bitch knew how it would affect us by choosing her. I want to kill him!"
"I know. Me too. But, how? We don't know who or what he is." Phoebe started pacing. "There must be something in the book, but I don't even know where to begin looking."
"We will find something! Plus, we have Leo. Maybe he will be able to help us in some way."
"Oh my God! Leo! I forgot about him. How are we going to tell him?" Phoebe said, worriedly.
"Phoebe, calm down. We will tell him when the time comes. We need to find out how Piper is first."
"Your right! Where is that doctor anyway? I can't take this waiting much longer."
"Sit down, Phoebe. This can't be good for your head. Rest. I will try to find out something about Piper. Now get on the bed and rest."
Reluctantly Phoebe got on the bed and stretched out as Prue walked out of the cubicle.
Prue walked up to the Nurse's station. "Excuse me, Ma'am? Has there been any word on my sister yet?"
The nurse looked up at Prue, "I didn't realize the police were through talking with you guys. I will send the doctor in to talk to you."
Prue smiled wanly, "Thanks."
Returning to the cubicle, Prue sat back down in her chair. "The nurse is going to let the doctor know that the police are gone. He will come and talk to us soon." Closing her eyes, she leans her head against the side of Phoebe's bed. Phoebe reaches over and runs her fingers through Prue's hair.
After a few minutes, the doctor that treated Phoebe walked in. "Sorry to keep you waiting. I will let you know as much as I can about your sister's condition."
"How is she? Is she going to be okay?" Phoebe asked.
"I just got back from the OR checking on her, she's in surgery right now. Her condition on arrival was not good. She had received numerous abrasions and contusions and had a hemopneomothorax upon arrival, which was the cause of her labored breathing. "
"A hemo numo what?" asked a bemused Phoebe.
"It's a medical term that means that there is air and blood in the chest cavity causing a decrease in the capacity of a lung to expand. Usually caused by something perforating a lung."
"I still don't understand." Prue stated.
"Well, let's start at her head and work downward using layman's terms. Piper apparently received a severe beating. The results are a broken jaw, a concussion, along with severe bruising and torn skin on her face. In addition, there were two long lacerations on each side of her face. These have been sutured. Luckily, we have one of the best plastic surgeons in the country on staff, so Piper will be left with virtually no scars from these lacerations. There was a deep bite wound on her right shoulder next to her neck. This also has been sutured and a course of antibiotics administered to prevent any type of infection from occurring. Moving on to her chest and abdomen, she has eight broken ribs. One of the broken ribs punctured her left lung resulting in the hemopnuemothorax. This caused her left lung to collapse. In addition, another rib pierced her liver. And the blunt force trauma from the assault cause her spleen to rupture causing a massive amount of internal bleeding."
"Like I said, is she going to be okay?" a very shaky Phoebe asked.
"She will be in surgery for a while to repair these injuries. Her lung will be repaired, reinflated, and a chest drain inserted to prevent a reoccurrence of the hemopnuemothorax. Her ribs will be set and wired together to aid in healing. Her liver will be repaired and her spleen will be removed. She will receive blood transfusions to replace the blood loss. Also she had five strange third degree burns on her arms and torso. These, unfortunately, will probably scar."
"What is it your not telling us?" asked Prue.
"Well, there is a good chance that she will develop pneumonia. In her weakened condition this could be life threatening. But, she will be started on IV antibiotics to try to prevent this from happening."
"When can we see her?" asked Prue.
"She will be in the OR for at least 5 or 6 more hours and then a couple of more hours in the recovery room. It will be at least 8 hours before you can see her. Why don't you go home for a while and get some rest?"
"We're not going anywhere until we see her." Phoebe said emphatically.
"I had a feeling you were going to say that," the doctor began, "so, I made arrangements for you guys to stay in the room she will be in after she gets out of surgery."
"Thanks." Prue said. "Oh, by the way, there is one question that Piper will ask us before any other question."
"What is it?" the doctor asked intrigued.
"How long will she be in here?" Phoebe finished for Prue.
Laughing, the doctor said, "It depends on a lot of things but, I would count on a minimum of 4-6 weeks."
"Thank you, doctor, we appreciate all you've done for us." Prue stated.
"No problem. Now just let me get an orderly to show you to Piper's room."
Chapter 4
Piper's room has a small couch in it. It was a private room, so Prue and Phoebe felt that they could talk freely. They were still waiting on Piper to get out of surgery. Prue was sitting on one end of the couch while Phoebe was lying down with her head in Prue's lap. "How much longer do you think it will be, Prue?"
"I don't know, Pheebs." Prue said with a big sigh. Piper could be a while yet. Why don't you try to get some sleep? Your head has got to be killing you. You know you've been through a lot, too."
"I know. We all have." After a couple of seconds Phoebe asked, "What do you think that warlock whispered to Piper?"
"I have no idea. But, you know, she will have a hard time dealing with all of this. We will have to be there for her 100%." Prue continued, as if talking to herself. "I don't know what she'll need, but we will just have to be there to support her. I can't believe that I failed her." Breaking down, Prue started to cry.
Sitting up, Phoebe hugged Prue, "Hey, none of this is your fault. There was nothing any of us could do. Please don't do this, Prue. Piper needs you. I need you. This is what the warlock wants. He wants to weaken us by making us think that this is our fault. That somehow we could have prevented it. But we couldn't have. And it's something we are going to have to face. This is the reality that you and I are going to have to deal with and try to help Piper deal with. We just need to figure out how to get this warlock. That is where we have to start. We can't vanquish him without knowing who he is."
Prue had been nodding throughout Phoebe's little speech. "I know. I know you are right. I just feel so frustrated. Piper has a long, hard road ahead of her and you heard the warlock. He is going to come back and what if next time he does this to you? I can't take it, Phoebe! You guys mean the world to me and I can't stand to see you hurt. I can't deal with it!"
"I know. I feel the same way about you and Piper. I felt so powerless when they were torturing Piper! But this is his plan! He knew that we would feel this way. That's why he picked Piper first. We need to stop thinking about what happened and start taking things one step at a time. One minute at a time if we have to. The first thing is to make sure that Piper gets better. We both know that she will get well physically. It will take time but she will. But Piper has always been the one of us that is the most emotional. She takes things hard and she takes a long time to get over things. It is up to us to help her. Prue, we have to be strong. For Piper."
"Okay, I know you're right. Now just try to get some rest. It won't do her any good if you are out of it when she gets back. I promise I will pull myself together around her." Prue reassured Phoebe. However, Prue knew that this attack had gotten to her as no other before had. Not even when they thought that Piper was going to die. There was always hope then that Leo would come through, just as he did in the end. But the warlock had said that Leo wouldn't be able to help Piper. And Prue didn't doubt his word. This warlock seemed stronger than any they had battled before. Laying her head back on the couch, she finally drifted on into a fitful slumber.
Startled awake by loud noises, both Phoebe and Prue jumped up off the couch assuming defensive stances before realizing that they were in a hospital room. The noise that they heard was a group of people wheeling a gurney into the room. Giving each other a sheepish look, they realized that they were perfectly safe for the moment. Moving back to the couch, they tried to stay out of the way as the hospital personnel transferred Piper from the gurney to her hospital bed.
Once the transfer was complete, they finally got a good look at Piper. She had multiple IV lines running into her and was hooked up to several monitors. Her face was heavily bandaged and the parts that they could see were swollen and bruised. Piper was lying on her side facing them so the sisters could see that she was still out of it. A nurse remained in the room, trying to get Piper situated and taking post-op vital signs. Prue started in, "How is she?"
The nurse briefly glanced at Prue but continued with her duties while answering, "She came through the surgery just fine, but she's still pretty much out of it. When she awoke in the recovery room, they gave her pain meds. And with her concussion I don't expect that she will be lucid tonight. You guys should really go home and get some rest."
"We're not going anywhere. We'll just catch what sleep we can on the couch tonight. She needs to know that we are here with her." Phoebe responded.
"Okay. But we will be in and out quite frequently tonight doing vitals, giving her meds, and changing out the IV bags. I'm afraid that you won't get much rest. And to be quite honest, you guys don't look to be in the best shape either."
"Thanks for your concern, but we will be okay. When will a doctor be in to talk to us about her?"
"The resident will probably check in a little later. You can talk to her then. Until then try to get some rest." The nurse said as she left the room.
"Oh God, Prue, she looks so pale." Phoebe started crying again.
"Pheebs, she will get better! It will just take time. Look, your exhausted and need to rest. Lay down on the couch and sleep. I am just going to sit up with her for a while."
Moving a chair over by the bed, Prue sits down and takes one of Piper's hands in her own.
"Are you sure, Prue? You're tired, too! I can sit with her for a while."
Wearily, Prue responded, "No, Pheebs, just go to sleep. I need to do this. Please?"
Reluctantly, Phoebe laid down, "Okay, but if anything happens wake me up? Okay, Prue?"
Nodding her head, Prue said, "Okay, Pheebs, I love you."
Settling in, almost asleep already, Phoebe said, "Love you, too."
The surgical resident had come and gone while Piper and Phoebe slept. She explained to Prue pretty much everything that the ER doctor had already told them, adding a few pertinent details. After the resident had left, Prue once again turned to Piper, tears streaming down her face she began, "Piper, I am so sorry. I promised to always take care of you and Phoebe. And this time I didn't. I am so sorry. It's all my fault that they cut your face. If I had only kept my eyes open...but it was so hard. To see them doing that to you. I just couldn't watch any longer and it caused you even more pain. I can't explain what was going through my mind. They had warned us. But I closed my eyes anyway. I thought he wouldn't notice. I was so wrong. I am sorry. I can't say it enough." Prue trailed off, her shoulders heaving in quiet sobs. She had almost cried herself to sleep when she heard a soft moan.
"Prue?"
Looking up, Prue saw that Piper was waking up. "Piper? Don't try to talk, honey."
"Over?" Piper looked at Prue with a hint of desperation in her voice.
"Yes, honey. You're safe now."
"No. Not safe. Never safe again." Tears were forming in Piper's eyes.
"Piper, please don't try to talk right now. Your jaw is broken. They had to wire it shut. That's why it is so hard to talk right now."
"Hurts!" Piper cried.
"What hurts, honey?"
"Everything!" Trying to turn over on her back, Piper let out an anguished cry, waking up Phoebe.
Jumping up once again in a defensive stance Phoebe asks, "What? Where is he?"
"It's okay, Pheebs, we're safe." Prue replies.
"Not safe!" Piper answers back.
Phoebe sees that Piper is awake and rushes over to give her a hug. "Careful, Pheebs, she's in pain."
Being gentle with her sister Phoebe responds, "Then let's call the nurse in here and get her something for the pain!"
Reaching over, Prue pushes the call button on Piper's bed, "Good idea!"
Phoebe helps Piper turn onto her back. Noticing that part of Phoebe's hair has been shaved and that she has stitches, Piper asks her, "Are you okay?"
"That is so like you, Piper. I am fine. Just a little headache. I'm worried about you."
Trying to smile past the pain but failing miserably, Piper responds, "I hurt."
"I know, baby. But we will get you something for the pain, okay? Let us make it all better!" Phoebe responds trying to be cheerful.
Tearing up Piper says, "Not safe! They will come back. Could be you next time. I couldn't take that!"
"Piper, let me and Prue take care of that for now. You just concentrate on yourself! We need for you to get better. Like the warlock said, you are our rock."
Just then a nurse walks into the room, "What can I do for you?"
Prue, who had been strangely quiet during the conversation between Phoebe and Piper, said, "My sister is in pain and need something to help her with it."
"Okay, not a problem. I will go and get some Demoral ready. I'll be right back."
After the nurse had walked out of the room the sisters sat in silence for a few minutes. Then Piper looked up at Prue and asked, "Prue, when do I get to go home?"
Both Prue and Phoebe started laughing, "The doctor said it would probably be a while, baby. At least four weeks."
Piper shook her head, "Not staying that long!"
"Okay, honey, we'll talk about later. Just get some rest, okay?" Phoebe responded, amusement still in her voice.
The nurse came back in the room with the pain medicine and injected it in Piper's IV line. "That shouldn't take very long to kick in. When it does you should be able to rest a little better." Smiling at the sisters, the nurse left the room.
"The nurse is right, Piper. You should try to rest. Phoebe and I will be right here. We won't leave you, okay?"
Already feeling a little groggy from the medicine, Piper nodded her head. "Prue?"
"Yes, honey?"
Pinning Prue down with her eyes, Piper said, "It's not you fault! Okay?"
When Prue didn't answer, Piper said again, "Okay?"
Feeling very guilty, Prue responded unenthusiastically, "Okay, Piper. Now get some rest."
Both Phoebe and Prue find an unbandaged spot to give Piper a kiss before Piper drifts off to sleep.
Once Piper was out Phoebe looked over at Prue and said, "You are going to have to be a little more convincing than that, Prue. The only reason she didn't push the point was because the medicine knocked her out."
"I know, Pheebs," Prue said, tiredly. "Just drop it for now. I am doing the best that I can. I promise to try to do better next time." Getting up, she continues, "I am going to go get something to drink. Do you want anything?"
"No thanks. And don't think I don't know that you are just trying to avoid this conversation. But I will let you get away with it for now. I am going to lay back down for a while. Wake me if anything happens. I love you."
Walking out of the room, Prue says, "I love you, too."
Chapter 5
The next morning finds Prue asleep in a chair with her head laying on Piper's bed. She had a very long night. After Phoebe had fallen back asleep, Darryl had come to the hospital in response to the attack on the sister's. She had filled him in on what had really happened and he had promised to file a generic police report. One that would not be specific enough to be able to be solved. This would definitely be one case that would go down in the SFPD's police files as unsolved. She had finally fallen asleep at dawn.
She awoke to the feeling of the bed shaking. Confused and not quite awake, she looked up at Piper. Piper was crying uncontrollably. The tears were streaming down her face and her body was shaking with the force of her emotions. "Ssh, sweetie. It's okay. Tell me what's wrong."
Piper just shakes her head and continues crying. Prue, feeling frustrated that because of Piper's injuries she can't hug her, gently strokes Piper's hair. "Please, Piper! What happened? Do you need more pain medicine?"
Phoebe wakes up while Prue is asking the last question. "What's going on?" She sees that Piper is crying hysterically and quickly gets up to go over to the bed. Looking at Prue, Phoebe asks, "What happened?"
"I don't know. I woke up and she was like this." Redirecting her attention to Piper, she attempts to comfort her. "Piper, honey, Phoebe and I are both here. We won't let anything happen to you."
This makes Piper cry even harder. Shaking her head she attempts to say, "Prue...he...he..." That's all she says before becoming hysterical again.
Not knowing what to do, Prue and Phoebe attempt to comfort Piper. Looking at Phoebe, Prue says, "Why don't you go tell one of the nurses that Piper needs something for the pain?"
Glad to have something to do Phoebe says, "Okay, I'll be right back."
Prue continues to stroke Piper's hair. Giving small comforting noises in an effort to calm Piper.
Phoebe and a nurse enter the room. "So, you need something for the pain? Coming right up." She walks over to Piper's bed, checks her wrist ID band, then injects the medicine into Piper's IV line. "Miss Halliwell, please don't hesitate to ask for the pain medicine if you need it. Starting tomorrow we well get you set up with an IV infusion pump so you can self medicate when you need pain medicine." Finishing the injection she continues, "If you need anything else just let me know." The nurse smiled at the girls before walking out the door.
After what seemed like an eternity to Prue and Phoebe, Piper started to calm down. Making a visible effort to pull herself together she told them what had upset her so much, "He was here. In this room!"
Phoebe asked, "Who was here?"
"That warlock. The one who wants us to call him master."
"What?" Both Phoebe and Prue asked at the same time.
"He was here this morning. Before you guys woke up."
Prue quickly glanced at Phoebe before asking, "Maybe you were dreaming, Piper."
Shaking her head as vigorously as the pain would allow Piper said, "No!! I woke up because I was coughing and the pain in my ribs was unbearable. I looked over and you were asleep in the chair and Phoebe was asleep on the couch. I was about to call the nurse to ask for some pain medicine when, suddenly, he was standing right behind you, Prue."
"Did he say what he wanted?" Prue asked.
"Yeah, he wanted to make sure that I was alive and in pain. He also wanted to remind me that all this would be repeated as soon as I was well. He did say that there was a possibility that it would be one of you guys next time. We're not safe! He can blink in anytime and anywhere he wants! I can't take this. I couldn't stand it if one of you guys had to go through this!"
"Stop!!" Phoebe said. "We are not going to let it happen again. To any of us! All we have to do is figure out who this warlock is and then vanquish him. We can and will vanquish him as painfully as possible!"
"No, Phoebe. He's very powerful. What if we don't figure it out before the next time? I can't go through that again! I just can't." Piper said, her voice almost a whisper as she said the last words.
"Piper, look at me." Prue began. "We won't let it happen again." Seeing that Piper was not convinced, she tried a new tactic, "Look, they managed to get us so easily because we didn't know about them. We weren't prepared. But, now we know what they are going to do and we can be ready for them next time. We will beat them, Piper. Have a little faith in us and in the power of three."
Mulling it over, Piper responded, "I'll try, Prue. It's just so hard. That guy knew what he was doing and he has a master plan. He also knows that we will be more prepared for him next time. I think he'll be ready for that. But, I'll try. That's the best I can do for now."
Thinking that this was as good a time as any Phoebe asked, "Piper, what did that big warlock whisper to you?"
Blanching and visibly paling, if that was even possible considering the amount of blood that she had lost, Piper responded in a detached manner, "He said that next time he would rape me."
Both Prue and Phoebe looked horrified by this bit of information. Prue stated vehemently, "We won't let that happen!"
Piper looked at Prue, "I know that you would like to believe that, but if they get us again there is nothing you, Phoebe, or I can do that can prevent it from happening."
"Oh, Piper..." Phoebe started but was interrupted when Piper started coughing.
"Oh God, this hurts so much! Please remind me not to cough again." Piper said, huge tears once again streaming down her face.
"Piper, you should get some rest. Phoebe and I will be right here. Plus, if what he said is true, we are perfectly safe for the time being. He won't attack us again until you are better. So rest." Prue said, effectively ending the discussion on the warlocks for the time being. Leaning over she kissed Piper's hand lovingly.
"Yeah, Prue's right. We'll be right here with you, honey." Phoebe kissed Piper's forehead.
"Okay, I love you guys."
"We love you, too." Phoebe responded.
After Piper had drifted off to sleep, Phoebe looked at Prue, "My God, Prue! She has been through so much and now that asshole is coming back to rub it in! Plus you know one of her secret fears is being raped."
"I know. I know. What I don't know is how we are going to help her through this. She's right. None of us are safe. They could come back at any time and this could be repeated. There is no way that I can protect you guys." Prue said despondently.
"Prue, it's not your job to protect us. We protect each other! That's the way it works. And what about that little speech you gave to Piper? About being prepared when they attack again?"
"I was only saying that to reassure her. I should have known better. She can always tell when I am lying. She always could. Even when we were kids. That's why she always knew when I was going to sneak out to be with Andy. That's why she knew that I really did want you to move back from New York."
"Yeah, I know what you mean. She can always tell with me too." Sighing deeply, Phoebe continued, "If we really are going to find out who this warlock is one of us is going to have to go back to the manor and get the BOS."
"Not to mention the fact that we need to eat. We haven't eaten anything since breakfast yesterday morning. Tell you what, I'll run back to the manor get the book of shadows, some clean clothes, and then I'll stop somewhere and get us something to eat. You stay with Piper, okay?"
"Okay. Hey, Prue, what do you think happened to Leo? He should have been here by now. He has always sensed when Piper has needed him before."
"I don't know, Pheebs. I'll try calling for him when I get back to the manor. I'll be back as soon as I can. I love you." Prue said, kissing Phoebe and getting up to leave.
"I love you, too. Be careful, Prue."
Chapter 6
At the manor, Prue is packing a few necessities for all three of the girl's. Walking into Piper's room, she notices an envelope laying on Piper's bed. Without hesitation she walks over and picks it up. Realizing that it is from Leo, Prue opens it feeling no guilt whatsoever. After reading the contents and realizing what this will do to Piper, her legs give out and she slowly sinks to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
Back at the hospital, Phoebe is quietly sitting by Piper's bed, holding her hand and gently stroking Piper's hair. "I love you so much, Piper! I can't stand it that you are here in this bed. I promise that I won't let them hurt you again!" However, at that moment she was hit with a premonition of Piper being raped by the big warlock while she and Prue were forced to watch. The vision that Phoebe saw was brutal and violent. The look on Piper's face was one of utter hopelessness. The premonition was more than Phoebe could take. She rushed into the bathroom, throwing up what little there was in her stomach.
After a bout with dry heaves, Phoebe finally sat back and tried to compose herself. Getting up, she rinsed her mouth out with water from the sink. Looking in the mirror, she said to herself, "Get a grip! We will not let that happen! You have to be strong for Piper. She needs you right now. You can handle this, Phoebe." Trying to convince herself despite the trembling of her hands, she said one last time, "You can! Now go out there and convince Piper that everything is all right in the world!"
Walking out of the bathroom, she pasted a bright smile on her face when she noticed that Piper was awake and watching her. "Hey, kiddo, how's the patient?"
"Stop it, Phoebe!" Wincing in pain, Piper rolled over on the bed. Narrowing her eyes suspiciously, she asked, "What did you see?"
"You were awake?" Trying to act nonchalant, Phoebe says, "I don't know what you are talking about. I didn't see anything."
Closing her eyes to try and block out a fresh wave of pain, Piper wearily says, "Cut the act, Phoebe. I know that you had a premonition. Just like I know that you are lying to me now. Tell me what you saw."
"Look, Piper. You are in no condition to tell me what to do. You have been through major trauma and you are in pain even as we speak! I am not going to add to your pain by telling you anything! Just let me and Prue handle things while you concentrate on getting well."
Frowning, Piper glares at Phoebe, "You know that I can't do that! You guys mean too much to me. What did you see, Phoebe!"
"It was nothing important anyway. Really, nothing to worry about!" Phoebe quickly turns away from Piper hoping she won't be able to see through her.
Another groan of pain from Piper is quickly followed by, "So that's why you spent the last 10 minutes in the bathroom puking your guts up. I mean it, Phoebe! Tell me what you saw." Obviously getting more upset by the second, Piper continues, "It must have been horrible." This is all she manages before succumbing to a coughing fit.
Quickly rushing to aid her sister, Phoebe picks up a glass of water, "Here sip this."
Accepting the glass of water, Piper finally calmed down. "Thanks, sis."
Brushing Piper's hair off her forehead, Phoebe noticed how hot Piper's skin was. "You feel like you have a fever. I think I should go let someone know."
Giving a typical Piper arm gesture, Piper says, "No, it's from the coughing. It's just that it hurts...so damn much. Please just let me rest a minute. I'll be okay." her voice trailing off at the end. Her eyes were closed and Phoebe stayed on the edge of the bed stroking Piper's hair comfortingly.
This is how Prue found them when she walked in a little later. Smiling briefly at the cute picture her sisters presented, she abruptly pulled herself back to reality when she remembered why they were at the hospital to begin with. "Pheebs." Prue said quietly, trying not to disturb Piper.
Getting up to help Prue with her packages, Phoebe said, "Hey, Prue. Let me give you a hand."
Noticing Phoebe's distinct lack of enthusiasm, Prue became immediately concerned, "Is she okay? What's going on?"
"She's about the same. Still in pain, but fighting it. Although, I think she's developing a fever."
"Look at me, Phoebe." Prue demanded. "What's the matter? You're shaking. Tell me what is going on!"
Starting to break down, Phoebe rushes into the bathroom. Prue immediately sets everything down and goes after her. Taking Phoebe into her arms, she lets her cry giving her time to let it all out. When she sees that Phoebe is starting to pull herself together, she asks gently, "What is it, baby girl? Tell me what happened."
Phoebe has cried so hard that she has the hiccups. Starting slowly but building quickly on her story, she tells Prue about her premonition. "It was the most awful thing you could imagine, Prue. It was so violent and so brutal. And you know that Piper is so gentle! Why? What did we do to deserve this? I know she has never done anything so it must be one of us."
Pulling her back into an embrace, Prue comforts Phoebe with, "Shh, it's okay. We haven't done anything. We aren't going to let that happen. Not to our Piper!"
"You want to know what the worst part was, Prue? The absolute worst part?" Phoebe asked, pulling back so she could look into Prue's eyes.
Dreading what she was about to hear, but knowing that Phoebe needed to tell her, Prue could only nod her head.
"It was her eyes, Prue. The look in her eyes." Shaking her head, Phoebe continued. "That person that was laying there being brutalized was no longer our sister. Piper, our Piper was gone. She was alive physically, but, mentally...I don't know. Her spirit was gone. Her essence that makes her uniquely Piper was no longer there." Phoebe broke down once again, falling back into her big sister's arms for comfort.
"I'm so sorry you had to see that, Phoebe! We will keep it from happening! Some way, somehow we will stop this bastard!" Prue said, tears rolling freely down her cheeks.
The girls continue to comfort each other for a few minutes before pulling apart. "Prue, did you get in touch with Leo?"
"Not exactly. Leo left a note for Piper on her bed." Sighing deeply, Prue continued, "I'm afraid that this warlock is more powerful than even I thought he was."
"Why? What did the note say? Please tell me that nothing has happened to Leo? I don't think Piper could take that!"
"Calm down, Pheebs. He's okay. The note said that the elders had an emergency assignment for him and that he would be away for as much as two months."
"Why do you think the warlock had something to do with Leo going away?" Phoebe asked.
"It's just too convenient. I mean Piper and Leo had a weekend trip planned. And suddenly, Leo is called away? Plus, the warlock said that Leo wouldn't be able to heal Piper, that she would have to go through the healing process. Two months time will probably be enough time for almost all of her injuries to heal. Like I said, it's just too convenient."
Rubbing her temples in a futile attempt to stave off her headache, Phoebe agreed, "Yeah, you're right. This is just going to devastate Piper. She is not going to deal well with this. Who's going to tell her?"
Taking pity on Phoebe, Prue said, "I will, when the time is right." Seeing how Phoebe was rubbing her head, Prue asked, "Are you feeling okay, sweetie?"
"Just a headache, Prue. It's nothing compared to what Piper is feeling."
"Nonetheless, let's get some food in you and I will see if I can't conjure up an aspirin or two to help with it. I brought you some clean clothes. I thought you might like to take a shower. I think it might help you feel better."
Walking out of the bathroom, Phoebe said gratefully, "Thanks, Prue. It probably will."
Sitting down on the couch, Phoebe tears into the salad Prue brought for her. Prue talked the nurses out of some aspirin for Phoebe before she managed to achieve a semi-comfortable position in the chair next to Piper's bed, dozing off her hand resting on Piper's.
Chapter 7
Prue wakes up a little while later, she sees that Piper is sleeping. Noticing that Phoebe has taken a shower and is now asleep on the couch, she decides to go get something to drink. After getting some sodas, she comes back into the room. Popping one open, she is taking a drink when she hears Piper ask very weakly, "Prue, I'm cold. Would you get me another blanket?"
"Sure, sweetie. Let me see if there is one in this closet." Getting a blanket from the tiny closet, Prue spreads it over Piper. "Here you go, baby girl. How does that feel?"
"I am so cold, Prue. I feel even worse than before."
"Piper, you're shivering." Prue brushes Piper's hair back from her forehead, noticing that Piper is sweating profusely. "You have a fever, Piper. I am going to call a nurse." Noticing that Piper's breathing doesn't sound right, Prue presses the nurses call button.
"Would you like a drink of water?" Prue asked Piper. Seeing the silent tears falling down Piper's cheeks, she asks, "What is it, honey? He didn't come back did he?"
'No. It's just that..." Trying to catch her breath, Piper continues, "Prue, where is Leo? I have been calling him and he hasn't come." Closing her eyes, struggling, she continues, "Do you think that the warlocks hurt him? He said that he made sure that Leo wouldn't be able to help me."
Prue immediately says, "No! Piper, when I went home I found a note from Leo to you. I opened it. Leo said that he was sent on a mission that could take as long as two months." Looking at her sister to see if she comprehended what she was saying and could handle what she was about to say, Prue continued, "I think the warlock arranged for Leo to be sent away."
"Leo is okay? How do you know that it is not just a trick? He could be playing with us now." Piper said, panic in her voice.
"Piper, honey, calm down. I don't think that the warlock can do that! He's powerful, but, if he could hurt Leo, he would have done it in front of you. Just to hurt you." Prue continued to stroke Piper's hair trying to calm her down.
"Prue?" Piper said in a breathless voice.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"I... can't... catch... my... breath." Piper said, her chest moving rapidly in and out in an effort to supply oxygen to her body.
In a true panic now, Prue called to Phoebe, "Phoebe! Phoebe, wake up!!"
Jerking awake, Phoebe asked, "What??"
"Go get help. Tell them that Piper is in trouble. Go! Now!"
Needing no more encouragement, Phoebe ran out of the room.
Trying to calm Piper down, Prue said, "Piper, please relax. I need for you to calm down now. The doctors and nurses will be in here soon to help you breath. Please relax." But Prue could feel how hot her sister's forehead was. She knew Piper was in trouble. A lone tear escaped, trailing down Prue's cheek.
A nurse followed by Phoebe burst into the room. "What can I do for you?" The nurse asked.
"My sister is burning up and she isn't breathing right!" Prue said, moving away from the bed making room for the nurse.
After assessing Piper, the nurse immediately left the room. "What is going on?" Phoebe asked Prue.
Before Prue could answer the room was swarmed with medical personnel. Two of the nurses made Prue and Phoebe leave the room while they worked on Piper. In the hallway, Prue filled Phoebe in on what had gone on.
They decided to go down to the waiting room. It was deserted except for one guy sitting forlornly in a corner chair. The girls sat side by side in institutional plastic chairs, hardly aware of the world going on around them, focusing on the events that were happening to them.
So focused in their own thoughts they didn't notice when the guy in the corner got up and walked over to stand in front of them. He regarded them quietly for a few moments before morphing into his true form. "Ladies, how are you?"
Immediately their attention refocused. They recognized that hated voice. Prue was the first to react. "What are you doing here?"
Looking astonished the master said, "Why, checking on my work, of course. It looks like it is progressing quite nicely."
Jumping up, Phoebe made a martial arts move on him. He easily thwarted it. "Phoebe, you must be kidding me. I am not going to fall to your little "mortal" tricks. You are going to have to do better than that."
Prue stands by her little sister, "What do you want now?"
"I am just making sure that you are suffering. I know that Piper is. Phoebe you have seen the future, have you not? Know that it is going to happen. There is nothing that you can do to stop it. Wait, yes there is. You can give me your powers. That will ensure that Piper is never raped. That she will never have to go through that torment. It is up to you." Looking at Prue, he continues, "And remember, Prue, you could not protect your sisters. You are a failure. They are mine to command, as I will." With that he blinks out.
"Prue, what just happened here?" Phoebe asked with confusion written all over her face.
"I think this is part of his plan. To come back and torment us." Prue said in a defeated voice.
They both sit down. Recalling her vision and how it had changed Piper, Phoebe said, "Do you think that this is all worth it, Prue? I mean our powers?"
"Do you mean if I think that it is worth it that we are the most powerful good witches of all times, I do!! If you mean do I think that we will survive this? I don't know." Prue said dejectedly.
"What if we can't survive this, Prue? I can't stand to even think about that vision let alone if it comes true!"
"I know, Pheebs! I know. Tell you what, you be strong when I can't and I will be strong when you can't." Prue said.
"What about Piper?" Phoebe asked.
"We will both be strong for her. If you can't then you will leave and I will take over. And if I can't then I will leave and you can take over. Is it a deal?"
Silence was the answer to Prue's question. "Phoebe?"
Looking a little ashamed, Phoebe said, "You know I risk that same premonition every time I touch Piper? I don't know that I can live through that again."
"I know! But you have to be strong when I can't. If it means you not touching her, then so be it. Just as long as she knows that you are there for her."
"She will know that something is up, Prue. I have always touched her. In some small way. A hug here, holding hands there. I have always touched her."
"Let's just try it. I know that it is a long shot, but it is our best chance. Please, Pheebs?" Prue pleaded.
"Okay, okay. I hope it works. You and I both know she can see right through us." Phoebe said wearily.
Some time later a doctor came out to talk to Prue and Phoebe about Piper. "Piper is not doing well. She is running a very high temperature. This means that she has developed an infection. If an infection develops within the first 24 hours of surgery it is always a respiratory infection."
"What does that mean?" Phoebe asked.
"It basically means that Piper has developed pneumonia."
"The doctor in the ER told us if she developed pneumonia that it could be life threatening." Prue said, her voice shaking.
"It could be. But let's take things one step at a time. Her fever is high, but we are doing everything that we can for her. We have increased the antibiotics. We have also increased the antipyretics to try to bring down her temp. She will be treated by respiratory therapy with drugs to open up her bronchial tubes."
"Excuse me." Phoebe said, interrupting the doctor. "But when will my sister be better?"
"It's hard to tell. It could be a week but it could be as much as a month. She will need your encouragement and support. You can go back into her room now." Getting up to leave, he continued, "I will keep you posted."
"Thank you." Prue said to the doctor.
Phoebe and Prue go back to Piper's room. Entering they both see that Piper is unconscious with an oxygen mask on her face.
"Will this never end?" Phoebe asks no one in particular as both sisters stand vigil on their vulnerable sibling.
Chapter 8
The days slowly passed into weeks. Piper's recovery was, indeed, slow and painful just as the warlock had predicted. She had been in the hospital for a month and was just beginning to recover from the pneumonia. Still weak as a kitten, she had insisted that she would recover at a much more rapid pace if she were allowed to work on P3's books. Phoebe and Prue had objected at first, but had given in when the doctors had given their approval. Prue had just left to go to P3 to get Piper's laptop and all the necessary paperwork Piper would need to start in balancing the club's books.
Sitting up in bed Piper looked over at Phoebe, "Pheebs, can I ask you something?"
"Sure, honey. Ask away." Pheebs said, smiling.
"Why don't you touch me anymore?" Piper asked with a sad look on her face. "I miss you."
Trying to play down what she knew was going to blow into a major issue Phoebe said, "What are you talking about? I touch you all the time."
"No you don't. You haven't since I got sick." Looking down at her hands, Piper mumbled, "I miss you, Pheebs."
"What does that mean, Piper? I have been with you, right here by your side almost 24/7 since this happened. What more do you want?" Phoebe said angrily.
Sighing deeply, Piper answered, "Yes, you've been here physically. But, it almost seems like your pulling away from me emotionally. I don't know. It's hard to explain. I just get this sense that you are avoiding me. Is something bothering you, Pheebs? Have I done something to make you mad? Please tell me." Looking at Phoebe with tears in her eyes, Piper continued, "I need you, Pheebs. I miss you so much!"
Unable to see Piper this upset, Phoebe rushed over and took her into her arms. It was a mistake. A big mistake. Once again she saw the vision of Piper being raped. This time the vision was longer. It seemed to include every detail from before and many more. Phoebe couldn't free herself from it. She was stiff in Piper's arms.
"Pheebs. Pheebs, are you okay?" Piper asked frantically. Piper gently shook Phoebe, trying to bring her out of the premonition. "Come on, Phoebe. Please wake up!" Panicking, Piper presses the nurses call button. "Please be okay! Please be okay!" Piper keeps chanting, rocking Phoebe in her arms.
Meanwhile at P3, Prue was finishing up loading her SUV with the necessary paperwork for Piper. Walking around to the driver's side she could see the warlock standing by the door. "What the hell!" Prue exclaimed.
"Well, yes. That's where I'm from, but that's beside the point. How are you, my dear?" the master said.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to ask you if you are ready to give me your powers yet. So, what's the verdict? You are about halfway through Piper's healing process; have you guys decided to take it easy on yourselves and give me your powers?"
"Go to hell! We wouldn't give you the time of day!"
"How does it feel, Prue?"
"How does what feel?"
"Knowing that you can't protect your sisters. That you are, in fact, helpless. Does that make you feel inadequate? Useless, perhaps?"
Prue could feel the emotions the warlock was saying wash over her. Fighting them off, she responded, "No! We will not let you win. We are much stronger than you!"
Snickering, the master knew he was pushing Prue's buttons. "Do you know what is going on right now at the hospital?"
Peering at him fearfully, Prue asked, "What?"
"Phoebe is having a premonition. Except this one is might very well be her last one. Now if you will excuse me, I have another sister to torment." With that the warlock blinks out.
"What?! Wait a minute! Get back here!" Realizing that the warlock was truly gone, Prue runs to her seat, starts the car, and frantically drives to the hospital.
Back at the hospital, Piper is laying in her bed worrying about Phoebe. Hospital personnel had come in and taken Phoebe to the emergency room. Piper was worried to death. Phoebe had not come out of her premonition.
Suddenly standing at the foot of her bed was the master. Piper reacts instinctively by throwing up her hands to try to freeze him.
"Good morning, Piper. How are you feeling today?"
"Why can't I freeze you?" Piper asked, frustration written all over her face.
"I am here in my astral form. You see, while I can't use my powers in my astral form, you can't use your powers on me. It's sort of a trade off, if you will. Now, let's get down to business. I see that you are healing quite nicely. How's the pneumonia going?"
"Just leave me alone!"
"Piper, you know what it will take for me to leave you alone. Are you willing to give up your powers? All you have to do is say the word and it will all be over." Walking over to the side of Piper's bed, he continued, "You are about half way through your healing process. It won't be long until we are all back in that room again. Are you willing to go through this again?"
Piper turns her head to the side, closing her eyes, tears sliding down her cheeks.
"No, no, no, Piper. You need to look at me and pay attention." Taking her chin in his hand he forces her to look at him. "Do you know why Phoebe won't touch you?"
Gently shaking her head, Piper indicates that she doesn't.
"When she touches you she gets a premonition of what is going to happen to you in one of my future sessions. It must be horrible, don't you agree? Phoebe has always been a touchy-feely person, has she not? This must be killing her not be able to touch you. Also, just so you know what she is going through, it is slowly driving her insane to know what is going to happen to you. So, you might want to think twice before asking her to touch you again." Looking very satisfied with himself, the warlock gently stroked Piper's hair.
Softly, almost to himself, he said, "You know that you are my favorite, don't you, Piper? I admire your ability to accept things as they are. You have an underlying strength that most people lack. I truly am sorry that you are the one that will be hurt the most during this. But, you see, you are the key. Without you, I don't think I could get to the other two. You are what makes them vulnerable. Does that make you feel powerful? It would me. But, your very goodness will be your downfall. Know this, Piper, I will triumph in the end. Victory, and your powers, will be mine." Standing up, the warlock waves and says, "Until next time." Then he is gone.
Piper lays there thinking, "My fault. This is all my fault. Phoebe's pain. Prue's torment. All because of me."
Chapter 9
Charging in to the hospital, Prue races for Piper's room. Rushing in, she sees Piper in bed, tears streaming down her face. "What is it, Piper? Where's Phoebe?"
Piper looked over at Prue, "I don't know, Prue! They took her out of here a while ago. It was like she was having a premonition and couldn't come out of it." Piper starts to become hysterical, coughing and doubling over in pain.
"It's okay, sweetie. Calm down, this isn't good for you. I'll go find out about Phoebe, okay?" Making Piper look at her, Prue continues, "Piper, you need to calm down. The last thing we need is for you to have a relapse. I am going to send a nurse in with some pain medication. I don't want you to argue, okay? You are in pain and need the medicine."
"Prue, it knocks me out. I hate that feeling! I need to know what is going on." Piper said desperately.
"Look, Piper, I know that you don't like the pain medicine, but you need it. I need for you to rest while I go and find out about Phoebe. Can you do that for me?" Prue asked, stroking Piper's hair.
Knowing that she was only causing Prue to worry more, Piper reluctantly nodded her head. "Okay, Prue. But, hurry."
Prue walked out to the nurse's station, "Excuse me, but could you tell me about my sister?"
A nurse looked up and asked, "Ms. Halliwell?"
"Yes, I need to find out about my sister, Phoebe."
"Phoebe is down in the emergency room. If you would go down there I am sure they will be able to fill you in on what happened."
"Thanks. Oh, could you please give Piper something for pain?" Prue asked.
"Sure. It's been a while since she's had anything. I'll bring it right in."
"Thank you." Prue said, heading off toward the emergency room.
Reaching the ER, Prue was shown to the cubicle Phoebe was in. "Hey, Pheebs, how ya doing?" Prue asked, walking over to the side of Phoebe's bed.
Phoebe looked up, "Oh thank God, Prue, tell them I'm okay and that I can go!" Phoebe demanded.
"Hold on, Pheebs. Tell me what happened."
Lowering her voice, Phoebe began to explain, "I had a premonition. The same one of Piper getting raped." Phoebe paled as she continued, "Except that this one went on and on. It was horrible, Prue! I couldn't bring myself out of it. God, I don't want to ever see that again! I can't take it. It's making me crazy, Prue. Every time I close my eyes I see Piper going through this..." Phoebe breaks down, crying inconsolably.
Prue takes Phoebe in her arms, "It's okay, Pheebs. It's over. Try not to think of it. Besides we won't let it happen!"
"But what if we can't stop it? What if it does happen, Prue? Piper will never be able to recover from that and neither will we!"
"We won't let it happen, Phoebe! Okay? You have to trust in us on this! We will figure out a way to prevent it and to vanquish this warlock!" Prue said, vehemently.
"What makes you so sure? We haven't figured out anything yet and it's been a month, Prue! When are we going to prevent this? There is nothing in the book and without Leo to help us, we have nothing to go on. No clue whatsoever!"
"Don't lose hope, Pheebs! We can figure this out. This is part of the warlock's game. He wants us to start doubting ourselves and our powers. It's all a part of his master plan."
Glancing around Prue asked, "What did the doctors say about you? Are you okay?"
"They don't know what happened. They are waiting on blood tests. How's Piper doing? I know that this must have upset her." Phoebe said, visibly trying to pull herself back together.
"She's upset and in pain. I asked a nurse to give her something before I came down here."
Chuckling, Phoebe said, "I bet that thrilled Piper. You know she hates that pain medicine. She would much rather suffer through the pain than be knocked out on the drugs. Which, when you think about it, makes you wonder how we are related since I would rather be high than suffer through any kind of pain."
Smiling, Prue said, "Yes, she was not exactly happy with me when I left her." Clearing her throat and sitting back where she could see Phoebe clearly, Prue continued, "Now, on a more serious note, we need to figure out what brought on your premonition. Do you know what triggered it?"
Looking down at her hands, Phoebe quietly said, "Yeah. I hugged Piper."
"You what? I thought you weren't going to touch her? Phoebe, after our talk I thought you understood what you risked by touching her."
"I know and I do understand! But you weren't there. Piper knows that I am not touching her on purpose. She doesn't understand why I won't touch her. We started to argue about it and one thing led to another and...I don't know, Prue. She needed comforting and it was the most natural thing for me to do, so I started to hug her. I love her and I can't stand to see her hurting. It's just not my nature to hold back. You know that. It's killing me not being able to comfort her."
"I know, Phoebe, but you are going to have to keep from touching her. You came out of the premonition this time, but what if you don't next time? Do you think you can withstand that kind of mental torture for long? This warlock has some sort of control over your premonitions. He warned me about this one. He said it could be your last premonition. I will not stand by and let you die! Do you understand me? I will not let you die!" Prue said with anger driving her words.
"Wait a minute! Wait a minute! What do you mean the warlock warned you?" Phoebe asked.
"He was waiting for me outside of P3. He wanted to know if we were ready to give up our powers yet. He warned me of your premonition and said it might be your last."
Sensing that Prue wasn't telling her everything, Phoebe asked, "What else did he say, Prue?"
"Nothing." Prue said, trying to be strong.
"No. You're hiding something. Tell me. Come on." Phoebe said, gently.
Just as Prue was going to answer a doctor came into the cubicle. "Hello, we have the results of your blood tests, Ms. Halliwell."
"Okay." Phoebe said cautiously.
"Everything looks to be normal with the exception of your blood glucose level. It's a little low. Have you eaten anything today?"
"No, I guess I haven't."
"Well, that could be part of the problem, however, I am not convinced that would have caused you to have an episode like you experienced. I would prefer that you stay overnight for observation." Seeing that Phoebe was about to protest, he held his hand up and continued, "But since you appear to have returned to a normal level of consciousness and your other blood tests are normal, and I know that you will be upstairs with your sister, then I will only recommend that you follow up with your family doctor."
"Thanks, I promise I will make an appointment as soon as possible." Smiling, Phoebe hopped off the bed ready to get out of the ER. "Come on, Prue. Piper is probably worried to death by now."
The girls were on their way to Piper's room when Prue remembered something that the warlock had said. "Wait a minute, Phoebe. Did the warlock contact you?"
"No. Why?"
"Right before he left he told me that he had to go torment another sister. Oh God, that means that he got to Piper!"
"What was she like when you talked to her?" Phoebe asked.
"She was crying but I didn't really give her a chance to talk. I just took over in my usual big sister way and insisted she needed pain medicine. What have I done, Phoebe!"
"Come on, Prue. We need to hurry!" Phoebe said, grabbing Prue's hand and hurrying down the corridor.
Chapter 10
The girls rushed into Piper's room noticing that Piper was out cold due to the pain medicine. Although it was obvious she was still upset because of the silent trail of tears down her cheeks, just now starting to dry. She was also clutching her left side. The side where most of her ribs were broken.
"Oh, Pheebs. Look at her, all the medicine does is knock her out. It doesn't really take away the pain. And I insisted that she take it. You know, I haven't been much good for you two since this whole thing started!" Prue said despondently, dropping down into a chair with her head in her hands.
"Prue, it's okay, honey. Everything will be alright. Piper needs to sleep, to heal. Come on, without you Piper and I wouldn't survive." Walking over to Prue, Phoebe sits on the arm of the chair and rubs Prue's back, "Prue, you are strong and whatever that warlock told you is not true! I know he said something that for whatever reason you don't want to share. But, I need for you to be strong now, for Piper. Since I can't touch her please go over to her and let her know we are here. Please?"
Seeming to brace herself, Prue nodded and said, "You're right, Pheebs. I can't continue to wallow in self pity. Piper needs us. And since I seem to be the only one that can offer physical comfort at the present time, I need to pull myself together and quit being such a loser."
"Wait a minute! I didn't say anything about being a loser, Prue. That warlock is getting to you more than you are willing to admit." Sighing, Phoebe rubs her head and continues, "Why don't I go get us something to eat while you stay with Piper?"
"Alright, are you okay to go alone, though?"
"Yeah, I'll just go down to the cafeteria and bring back some of the prize winning food to be found there." Phoebe said in an attempt to cheer Prue up.
Smiling in the way only Prue can, "Okay, Pheebs, but be careful anyway."
"Sure. Oh, by the way, do you have any money? I'm broke." Phoebe smiled back in the way only Phoebe can. This shared sister moment cheered Prue up more than Phoebe could have hoped.
Laughing, Prue responded, "Yeah, Pheebs. In my purse. There should be plenty to cover anything you want to buy. Oh, and get Piper a candy bar, too."
"What? I was going to buy something besides candy." Phoebe said with a twinkle in her eye.
"Sure you were. Just bring back some real food, as well." Prue said, laughing as Phoebe walked out the door.
Wetting a washcloth, Prue gently cleaned Piper's face, erasing all evidence of the tears she had shed. She rubbed Piper's back, trying to comfort her. After a few minutes of this, it was almost as if Piper could sense that Prue was there for her. Her breathing became deeper and her body seemed more relaxed than before.
Knowing that Piper was out and that Phoebe would be gone for a while, Prue finally succumbed to her fears. Crying inconsolably, Prue went into the bathroom to ensure that no one would see her break down. Prue knew that she had to be the strong one. The sister that the other two could rely on no matter what. It was just hard sometimes. Plus, there was no way to ensure that her sisters would be safe. What Phoebe had said in the ER was true. They had no clue how to stop this warlock. Prue knew without a doubt that she did not want Piper to go through what Phoebe had seen in her premonition. If that meant giving up her powers, then it would not be a hard decision for her to make. After all, she and Phoebe were willing to give up their powers when Piper was being tortured. If it hadn't been for Piper saying no, they would have already given their powers over to evil.
"Stop it, Prue!! Piper was right, you can't hand your powers over to evil. What am I thinking? I have to pull myself together!!" Prue thought to herself. Gathering her courage she washed up and went back to sit by Piper's side, waiting on Phoebe to bring the food.
Walking in a little later, Phoebe sees that Prue has fallen asleep with her head on Piper's bed. Knowing that this can't be comfortable for Prue, Phoebe is torn between letting her catch some much needed sleep or waking her up to eat the less than appetizing hospital cafeteria food. Placing the food down, Phoebe is spared from making the decision when Piper starts moaning loudly in her drug induced sleep. Abruptly awakened, Prue looks around confused.
"What's going on?" Prue asks.
About that time Piper's moans turn into whimpers. "I think Piper is having a nightmare." Phoebe says, starting to go to Piper.
"Stop! Don't touch her!" Prue exclaims. Seeing the hurt look on Phoebe's face, Prue continues in a softer tone of voice, "I've got her." Going over to Piper, Prue gently shakes her shoulders, "Piper, honey, wake up."
Jerking awake, Piper groans in pain, "Oh God, that hurts!" she says, hugging both arms around her ribs.
"It's okay, Piper. Sshh, honey, it's alright!" Prue said, gently stroking Piper's hair.
"No, Prue! It's not alright! And don't tell me that I need any more of those damn painkillers, okay?" Piper nearly shouted, pain evident in her voice.
Trying to hide her smile at Piper's painkiller remark, Phoebe said, "Piper, we promise not to shove any more painkillers your way if you will promise to try and calm down."
Sliding her eyes over to Phoebe, Piper said, "Pheebs, are you okay? What did the doctors say?"
"I'm fine, honey. I just need to eat a little more frequently." Phoebe said, glad that Piper didn't know that the warlock had some sort of power over her premonitions.
"Wait a minute! Just hold on a sec!" Piper said, trying to get in a more comfortable position. Letting out a pain filled sigh, she continued, "You guys are keeping something from me. I know you are. What are you hiding?"
"Piper we're worried about you. Did the warlock contact you while we were gone?" Prue asked quickly, trying to cover for both Phoebe and herself.
Instead of answering Prue's question, Piper countered with one of her own, "Prue, when can I come home? I've been in here forever!"
"I know you want to come home, baby. But, it's too soon. The pneumonia was a major setback. All the coughing has slowed the healing process for your ribs. The doctors won't even begin to talk about letting you go home yet. Besides you are far too weak. You know that, Piper." Prue said, sympathetically.
"I know, I know." Piper let out a frustrated sigh. "It's just that I hate it in here. I would be much more comfortable at home in my own bed." Piper couldn't resist one last try.
"No, Piper, and that's final! You are not going home until the doctor's say you are ready. Is that clear?" Prue demanded.
"Okay. Okay." Piper said, pouting.
"Now," Phoebe began, "back to what we were talking about. Did the warlock contact you, Piper?"
"I don't feel like talking about this." Piper said, closing her eyes.
"You might as well look at us, Piper, we are not going to go away. We want you to answer us." Prue said, gently but firmly.
Trying a different tactic, Phoebe asked, "What were you dreaming about just now?"
Piper snapped back with, "What do you see when you touch me?"
Phoebe opened her mouth to respond, but nothing came out.
Coming to her rescue, Prue said, "We're not talking about Phoebe, Piper. We're talking about you."
"I know, Prue." Looking away from her sisters, she continued softly, "Yes, he was here."
"What?!" Phoebe exclaimed. "What did he say to you?" she asked moving toward Piper.
"Don't touch me!!" Piper yelled, moving violently away from Phoebe. "Oww! Damn it! Will my ribs never heal?" she asked no one particular.
"What do you mean don't touch you?" Phoebe asked, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.
"I know why you can't touch me, Pheebs." Piper said. "He told me. Please don't touch me. I couldn't stand it if I were to lose you!"
"Piper, honey, I want to touch you. So much. But, I can't! I risk the same premonition every time that I do. If I could fix it I would. Please believe me." Phoebe pleaded.
"I know you would, Pheebs. I also know that it is tearing you up inside to know what is going to happen to me. So, please share it with me." Piper glanced at Phoebe, "I think I have a right to know what price keeping our powers will cost me."
Shaking her head, Phoebe said, "No, Piper! I can't! Please don't make me!"
"Piper, you're still avoiding the subject. What did the warlock tell you?" Prue said in an effort to spare Phoebe.
"No, Prue! I want some answers!" Piper demanded. "I've been laying here for a month now with my mind imagining all kinds of horrible things. I know you guys think you are protecting me, but it only makes it worse!" Piper had trailed off at the end and was now barely whispering. "My dreams now only consist of nightmare images created by the uncertainty of the future. We know that the warlock is coming back and you guys know what is going to happen. Please tell me. Please..." Piper looked at Prue tears shining in her eyes, "I have to know, Prue. To prepare myself."
Looking at her sister, Prue determined that Piper was ready for the truth, however, glancing over at Phoebe, Prue knew that it would be too painful for Phoebe to retell the premonition. "Pheebs, why don't you take a short walk while I talk with Piper." Prue suggested gently.
"Are you sure?" Phoebe asked, knowing that Prue was offering her a way out.
"Absolutely! Take your time." Prue said, giving Phoebe a reassuring smile.
Knowing that this was one of the times that she couldn't be strong for Piper, Phoebe nodded her head and walked out of the room almost as if she were ashamed.
Prue waited until Phoebe had closed the door. Turning back to Piper, she said, "This is hard on her. It is killing her that she can't touch you."
"I know, Prue! It's killing me, too! I miss her." Looking up at Prue, Piper continued, "I miss you, too."
"What do you mean? I'm here all the time."
"You are physically, but since this has happened you've crawled back into your 'protective big sister' shell. Prue, you can share. You don't have to be tough all the time. I know that you think this is all your fault; that you failed us in some way. You didn't, but you won't believe us no matter what we say." Once again, Piper tries to achieve a comfortable position, sighing in pain when she can't. "Prue, tell me about Phoebe's premonition."
"Are you sure, Piper?" Prue asked gently. "Once you know, the knowledge can't be removed."
"I'm sure, Prue! You don't know what it is like knowing that something horrendous is going to happen to you but not knowing what it is! Now, please tell me."
Taking a deep breath, Prue tells Piper about Phoebe's premonition. Piper takes it in with seemingly no reaction. It almost appeared like Piper was in a trance. Her demeanor had changed totally. She was showing absolutely no emotions whatsoever. Once Prue was finished a deafening silence ensued.
"Piper, honey, are you okay?" Prue said, becoming more concerned by the second. Still no reaction from Piper, Prue reached over and gently shook her, "Piper, are you okay, sweetie?"
Reacting as if in pain, Piper drew in her breath sharply, guarding her injured ribs, "Yeah, I'm fine, Prue. Do you think that I can be alone for a little while?" Piper asked her tone of voice flat.
"Piper, please don't do this. Don't withdraw from us." Prue said, pleadingly. "I knew I shouldn't have told you. You weren't ready yet."
"I'll be fine in a while. I just need a little time to get used to the fact that I am going to be raped, Prue. Please leave me alone for a while."
"Piper, we are not going to let it happen! We will find a way to prevent it!" Prue said imploringly sounding as if she were trying to convince herself as much as she was Piper.
Shaking her head, Piper said sadly, "We haven't yet, have we, Prue? Please, I need to be alone."
Prue left the room, tears sliding down her face as she remembered the look of hopelessness in Piper's eyes.
Chapter 11
Piper did not recover as quickly as Prue or Phoebe had hoped she would. The news of Phoebe's premonition had thrown her into a deep depression. She was withdrawn and barely responded to either of her sisters.
Prue and Phoebe were down in the hospital cafeteria discussing the situation. "Prue, I don't know what else to do." Phoebe started, frustration written on her face. "I can't find out any information on this warlock." Sighing deeply, she continued, "I guess we could write a spell but I don't know what the effect will be since we don't know who he is."
"I know, Pheebs. I don't know what to do either. I think that it will take the power of three to vanquish this warlock but..." Prue looked down dejectedly. "Piper is out of it. I can't seem to reach her. This is always the time that she would turn to you for comfort."
"I know that, Prue! And it's tearing me up inside not to be able to go to her. It's just not the same...not being able to touch her." Hesitantly, she continued, "I know we've been putting this off but I think we need to talk about giving up our powers."
Shaking her head, Prue said, "I don't know that we have the right to give them up. I mean if we do our powers will be going to evil. Do you realize what that means?"
"Of course I do! I just..." Phoebe trailed off, looking down at her hands, she continued forlornly, "You haven't seen what will happen, Prue. I have. I couldn't bear it if Piper had to go through that. I don't think she will survive. She has been depressed since you told her about it. Just think what she would be like if she actually had to live it! Do we really have the right to ask it of her?" Phoebe's eyes were shining with unshed tears.
"I don't know, Pheebs. But if our powers get into evil hands, then not only do we lose the ability to protect innocents, our powers will be used to hurt them." Running a hand through her hair, Prue continued, "I guess that we need to talk to Piper about it. I know you think it is too much for her to handle but I don't think we have a choice. Like it or not Piper is going to have to help us. I talked to the doctor this morning and he said that she should be able to come home in a couple of days. We will talk to her then."
"So, you have been thinking about giving up our powers?" Phoebe said almost fearfully. She didn't truly believe that Prue would ever consider giving up her powers. Prue had been getting into the Wiccan aspect of their heritage before the attack had occurred.
Prue let out a tired sigh, "Yes, I've been thinking of nothing else lately. I might have a different option for us to consider but I haven't thought it through yet."
"What do you mean, a different option, what is it?" Phoebe asked hopefully.
"Phoebe, I don't want to see Piper, or you, go through another attack from the warlock. I just couldn't stand to watch it. I've been thinking about what we could do to keep another attack from occurring and, like I said, I haven't thought out all of the details yet. We will discuss it when we get Piper home."
Seeing that Prue was not open to discussion, Phoebe rose, "Let's get back to Piper. I know that she probably doesn't realize it but just being with her may give her some hope."
"I know, we have to be there for her. We knew that she would take a long time to get over the first attack, let alone knowing that she is going to be raped if they get us again. We just need to be there for her, to support her emotionally. I know that it is taking a lot out of you, but Piper needs us."
"Okay, let's get back to her then."
Piper is sitting up in a chair when Prue and Phoebe walk into the room. "Hey, sunshine, how are you feeling?" Prue asked, walking over to Piper.
Piper responds in a monotone voice, "I'm fine. Just ready to get out of here."
Flinching at Piper's tone of voice, Phoebe says, "Prue told me that the doctors say you will be able to come home in a couple of days. Isn't that great?"
Piper looked at Phoebe blankly, "I guess. At least I'll be at home. Although it is just one step closer to when they are coming for us again."
Phoebe and Prue exchange looks, Prue says, "Honey, ..."
Piper interrupted, "Please, Prue. I don't want to talk about it." Morosely, Piper got up from the chair moving toward the bed, "Nothing will change what is going to happen, especially not talking about it!" she exclaimed before settling in her bed with her back to her sisters, effectively cutting off all communication with her sisters.
Two days later Prue helped Piper into the mansion while Phoebe walked beside them. "How does it feel to finally be home after almost six weeks in the hospital, Piper?" Phoebe asked excitedly.
Giving her sister a small hint of a smile, Piper said, "Actually, it feels pretty good. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed."
Astonished to see her sister smile, the first smile they had seen out of Piper in so long, Phoebe's mouth dropped open. Prue, not wanting to draw attention to the fact that Piper's mood was finally seeming to brighten for fear that Piper would remember why she had been depressed said, "I know that you will be much more comfortable here. And I promise that Phoebe will wait on you hand and foot."
Phoebe's mouth was still open when Piper glanced at her, "Pheebs, you better try closing your mouth before bugs fly in." she said, chuckling.
Amazed at the turn around in her sister, Phoebe couldn't help saying, "Okay, umm, Piper, Prue will be getting all the hard jobs while I get to entertain you!"
Still chuckling softly, Piper missed a step and started to fall forward. Phoebe rushed toward her trying to catch her. "No, Phoebe! Don't touch me!!" Piper said sharply.
Phoebe stopped in her tracks with a hurt look on her face. Noticing Phoebe's reaction, Piper continued softly, "I'm sorry, Pheebs. But you know what will happen if you touch me." Looking at Prue, Piper asked, "Would you please help me to my room? I'm tired and would like to rest now."
Prue could see that Piper's moment of levity was over. Hoping that Piper would not revert back to her deep depression, Prue said lightly, "Sure, sweetie. Maybe later after you have rested we can all watch a movie together. Would that be okay?"
"Sure, Prue. Just don't let Phoebe pick the movie. I don't want to watch any horror tonight." Piper said, trying to put up a pretense that she was at least trying not to be so depressed.
"Hey, I'll be good." Phoebe said. "I'll pick up a comedy or something, okay?"
Laughing, Prue said, "Okay, Phoebe. I think a comedy is just what we need. Now, Piper, let's get you up to bed. I think this little excursion of bringing you home has tired you out. You know that the doctor said that you still need to take it easy for a while."
Prue helped Piper into her PJ's and then in to bed. "There you go, kiddo. How does that feel?"
Sighing in relief, Piper said, "I can't believe how weak I still am." Smiling up at Prue, she continued, "At least my ribs don't hurt very much any more. That is a major plus."
Brushing Piper's hair from her forehead, Prue said, "Honey, it's going to take a little bit of time for you to get your strength back. You were pretty sick."
Seeing that Prue was getting ready to leave, Piper said, "Prue, can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Sure. What's up?"
Hesitating and unsure where to begin, Piper struggled to say, "Umm, well..."
Stroking Piper's hair, Prue said, "It's okay, honey. Take your time. I've got all the time in the world for you."
Obviously still struggling, Piper began, "Prue, I just wanted to say thanks. You know, because you are always there for me. I need to tell Phoebe too. You guys are so sweet and I don't know what I would do without you." She turned her head away from Prue, "Also, when the warlocks come back for us, I want you to know that I won't blame you if you can't watch."
"Piper, we won't let it happen. If, and this is a big if, it does then Phoebe and I will help you through it. No matter what happens we love you so much and will take care of you."
"I know you will, Prue. It's just...look at the toll this attack took on us. Phoebe risks her mental health just by touching me and you have suppressed your emotions to the point that I am afraid you will break. I am a wreck. Prue, I am scared. I don't think that I can withstand another attack." Piper said her voice a near whisper, tears glistening in her eyes.
"Piper, I have a plan. I just want you to think about this for now." Prue said.
"If it involves giving up our powers, I won't do it. I would not be able to handle it if our powers were used for evil. I have been the one out of the three of us to doubt being a witch the most, but I will not be responsible for an innocent being hurt with our powers. If that means that I have to die, then I will." Piper said, sounding strong for the first time in a long while.
"No, no one will be hurt. I think we should bind our powers. At least until we can figure out how to defeat this warlock. That way he can't get our powers at all."
Looking at Prue with doubt, Piper asked, "Do you think it will really work if we bind our powers?" A glimmer of hope was in her eyes.
"Just think about it. I need to go down and tell Phoebe about the plan. You need to rest. Sleep for now."
"I love you, Prue." Piper said, settling down in her bed.
Walking out the door, Prue responded, "I love you, too."
Downstairs Prue told Phoebe about her plan. "I don't know, Prue. I don't think it will work. I think that the warlock will just torture us until we unbind our powers and give them to him." Phoebe said doubtfully.
"If he does then I will have to agree with what Piper said. I will die before I give my powers to him to use for evil." Prue said emphatically.
"I know. But I am still not sure about binding our powers."
"Just think about it. Piper is still not strong enough for the next attack to occur. I think we have time to discuss the plan and any alternatives we can come up with." Prue said.
It had been a week since Piper had come home from the hospital. Piper improved both in body and in spirit in that time. It was as if being home was a catharsis for her. She even managed to go to the club a couple of times with both Prue's and Phoebe's approval. Still no decision had been made about binding their powers.
Suddenly, all three were abducted once again. As they regained consciousness, they could see that they were in a similar room as the first attack with one exception. Instead of a pole in the middle, there was a bed.
Piper looked around the room, growing despondent with tears streaming down her face she whispered, "No, this can't be happening. No...no...no..." she said, shaking her head.
Chapter 12
"Oh God, what are we going to do?" Phoebe asked, her face extremely pale.
"Okay, okay...we need to get out of here now. Think, Prue, think." Prue mumbled, almost to herself. Glancing over at Piper, she saw that Piper was in a daze, drawn inside of herself.
"Umm...Pheebs..." Prue began but was interrupted when the three warlocks blinked into the room.
The master began, "Hello, ladies. I trust everything has gone well with you the past few weeks. I hope my absence didn't distress you too much. You see, I wanted to lull you into a false sense of security. Make you think that you had more time than you really did. Did my plan work?"
"Let us go, you psychopath!" Prue fairly shouted.
"Now, now...let's not be so negative" the warlock began, sneering at Prue. "Have you come to a decision yet? Ready to willingly give me your powers?"
"Not in our lifetime! Not in a million lifetimes!" Phoebe said.
"Still so cocky. Have I not proven to you yet that I will win? When are you going to be convinced?" Walking over to Piper, he continued, "How was your recovery, my dear? I understand that it was quite painful."
Piper did not respond. Instead Prue and Phoebe both said, "Leave her alone!"
"What? Can Piper not talk for herself? You do know what is going to happen today, don't you, Piper? It's just as we talked about before. It was tempting to think about torturing one of your sisters, but I think we will continue with you this time. After all, we both know how this will affect your sisters." Giving Piper a contemplative look, he continued, "However, I have not asked you if you are willing to give me your powers. Are you, Piper?"
Looking at him, for the first time, Piper said decisively, "No, never! Do what you have to do, but I will never willingly give you my powers."
"Ah, such a pity. Oh well, I did give myself six months for you to willingly give me your powers. Only two have passed. This, of course, means that we will go through with the rape today. It won't be pleasant for you, Piper. Are you ready? Do you want to say anything to your sisters before we begin?"
Looking at her sisters, she said in a quivering voice, "Whatever happens do not agree to give up our powers!"
"Okay then." the master said, rubbing his hands together. "Let's remember that the same rules apply as before. Prue, you and Phoebe have to watch. If you don't then Piper's pain will increase." The warlock gestured to the big lackey.
The lackey went to Piper and said "I told you that I would get to have my kind of fun with you. I have been looking forward to this with great pleasure. Please fight me. I like it rough!"
The master waved his hand and the bonds holding Piper disappeared. The big warlock gestured toward the bed, "Care to join me?"
Prue and Phoebe were struggling against their bonds, desperate to try and free themselves so that they could help Piper.
Piper would not get up from the chair. The big warlock grabbed her arms, jerking her up. She started to resist him, suddenly finding strength where there was none before.
Laughing, the warlock punched her still tender ribs. Doubling over, Piper cried out in pain. The warlock picked her up and threw her on the bed, securing her arms at the top and her legs at the bottom.
"No, please don't do this!" Phoebe pleaded with the master. "She doesn't deserve to be treated like this. Please!" Tears were streaming down her face.
"Ah, Phoebe, my dear, you know what it will take to end this. Just tell me what I want to hear."
"You go to hell, you son of a bitch! Get him away from my sister!" Prue said, not taking her eyes off of the now docile Piper.
"Prue, you really need to learn to control your temper. You will die young from the stress you put yourself under. In response to what you said, I will repeat, you know what it will take to end this. Think about it. All you have to do is give up your powers and Piper won't have to go through it. Tempting, isn't it, Prue? You know that Piper will never be the same after this. She won't come through this as the perky, accepting sibling that you have always known and loved. Think of her torment." The master can tell that Prue is wavering, he continues, "You know, it will really be all your fault if this happens. You will be responsible. You can prevent it. Just say the words, Prue!"
"No, please. No, it's not my...I'm not..." trailing off Prue can't continue.
"You asshole! Stop it! Prue, it's not your fault. You're not responsible, he is." Phoebe said, trying to get through to Prue.
Piper lets out an emotional, "No!" The girls attention is sharply brought back to what is going on with Piper. The warlock is attempting to kiss her. Piper is eluding him so far. He raises up and backhands her. "Now, bitch, you will cooperate!"
Piper is still struggling when the warlock rips her shirt open and tears her bra off. "Yes, I knew you would be beautiful!! Perfect!!" he said, licking his lips. Running his hands over Piper's chest he continued, "I especially like the fact that you wore a skirt today. It is so sexy and so much easier to push up than it is to rip pants off of you." He continued to fondle Piper while she seemed to withdraw into herself. She quit struggling and seemed to go off into another world. The look in her eyes was as Phoebe had seen in her premonition.
"No! Piper...please stop this." Phoebe said, recognizing the look on Piper's face.
"Come on, Phoebe. All you have to do is give up your powers. Do you really think that Piper will ever be able to get over this emotionally? I don't think she is strong enough. Especially since she knows that she is the one that we will always torture." Walking over next to Phoebe, he continued, "Can you take it, Phoebe? You will never be able to touch her again without having a horrible premonition. You know this will be irreversible. But, it's not too late! You can stop it before it progresses too far. Say it, Phoebe! Now!"
Phoebe looked at Prue. They both understood the ramifications of what the warlock was saying. Piper would never be the same. Ever. They were seriously considering giving him their powers. Suddenly, Prue seemed to get control of her emotions, she looked at the master and said, "Piper would never forgive us if we gave our powers to you. She has already told us that she would rather die! We can't give our powers to you." She finished, forlornly. To herself she said, "Please forgive me Piper." Bowing her head, she started crying uncontrollably.
"So be it! And further more, you are not looking, Prue. This means that Piper's pain will be increased. Both of my helpers will rape her." The master indicated to the big warlock to continue.
The warlock started to push Piper's skirt up when the room was filled with bright lights. Two figures orbed in. Leo beside Piper and a stranger next to Prue and Phoebe.
"Get away from her, you bastard!" Leo said, slamming a fist into the big warlock's face. He looked over at the master. "You forgot to cloak yourself from us this time." He gently laid a hand on Piper's shoulder and quickly orbed out.
Meanwhile, the stranger had placed his hands on Prue and Phoebe's shoulders and orbed them out, as well.
Chapter 13
Inside the manor, Leo and Piper orbed into Piper's bedroom, while Prue and Phoebe, along with the stranger, orbed into the conservatory. "What's going on? Who are you?"
Phoebe asked, bewildered.
"I am a friend of Leo's." the whitelighter responded. "Leo needed me to help get you guys out of there."
"Where is Piper and Leo?" Phoebe queried.
"They are upstairs."
"How did you know where we were?" Prue asked.
"Leo will explain everything. I need to get back. You ladies take care and help your sister through this." he said. With that he orbed out.
"Those guys really like to be mysterious, don't they?" Phoebe asked.
"Yeah. I wonder how they found out about us?"
"I guess that we will have to wait for Leo to explain it us."
Meanwhile, upstairs in Piper's bedroom, Leo has Piper in his arms. "Piper, honey, please talk to me." he said. He had already gotten Piper into clothes that were not torn. She was laying listlessly in his arms, oblivious to anything happening to her.
"Piper, I am going to leave you for a couple of minutes. I need to go and talk to Prue and Phoebe. I'll be right back." Kissing her on the forehead, he laid her back on the bed.
Walking downstairs, Leo shouted, "Prue...Phoebe..."
"In the kitchen, Leo." Phoebe responded.
Walking in, Leo greeted them, "Hey. Are you guys okay?"
Immediately starting in on him, Prue said, "We're fine. How's Piper?"
Leo could see the love and concern on both sisters faces. "Not good. She won't respond to me. I need for you two to tell me what happened."
Suddenly very weary, Prue asked, "What do you know so far?"
"Not much. I've been away training a new white lighter. She was a quick study and I got back a little early. When I did, I sensed that Piper needed me. I guess the warlock still thought that I was on assignment and didn't bother to cloak what he was doing to you. The elders knew that I needed help to get you guys out so they sent Stephen with me. We got you out of there. That's all I know." Leo finished, frustrated.
Prue and Phoebe filled Leo in on what had happened while he was gone. "So, you guys think that this warlock, the master, had something to do with my assignment?"
"I think so, yes." Prue said.
"No, it doesn't work like that. This warlock is probably opportunistic. He somehow found out that I was reassigned or going to be, then made his move." Running a hand through his hair, Leo continued, "I can't believe Piper had to go through that. All I want to do is get my hands on that warlock right now and destroy him!"
Looking up at him, Phoebe said, "But, you can't do that, can you? I mean you can't destroy him. Love is the basis of your whitelighter powers. If you destroyed him that would taint you, wouldn't it?"
Resigned, Leo said, "No, I can't vanquish him. Do you guys have any idea who he is?"
"No. It's driving us crazy. Your saving us is only a temporary fix. He will come back after us. In addition, the master has told us that he will continue to torture Piper until we give him our powers. Piper heard him. That may be one of the reasons why she won't respond." Prue said, regretfully.
"Prue, I think that I have to go to Piper." Phoebe said, her voice trembling.
"No! You can't. I need you whole and sane! If you touch her we could lose you." Prue responded emphatically.
Sighing deeply, Phoebe responded, "I know. I just don't know how much longer I will be able to keep from touching her. If it will bring her back then I would gladly give up my sanity!"
Smiling sympathetically, Prue said, "I know you would, sweetie. But, I think that we are going to need the power of three for this one. We need for all of us to be whole. I will try to figure out how to reach Piper." Reaching over, she gathered Phoebe into a hug.
Phoebe's world was thrust into black and white. She saw Prue being tortured. Prue was being submersed in water over and over, barely able to catch her breath in between dunkings. Then she saw Prue lying on her back, with her eyes open, as if she were dead. Gasping, she came out of the premonition.
Prue asked, "What did you see?"
"He lied. He won't just torture Piper. You're next." Phoebe said, looking sick.
Prue absorbed this information. "At least it's not going to be one of you. What is going to happen?"
Phoebe didn't want to tell Prue about the premonition. She looked to Leo for help. Catching on to Phoebe's silent plea, Leo said, "Prue, why don't you go up and check on Piper. I need to go and talk with the elders and I don't want to leave her alone for long."
Prue, sensing that Phoebe didn't want to tell her about the premonition, said, "Pheebs, I won't press you to tell me yet. I think that since you had the premonition about me, you are able to touch Piper now. She needs you. Go to her."
Softly, Phoebe asked, "Are you sure?"
Gathering up her tremendous strength, Prue said, "Absolutely, she needs you now. You can finally comfort her. Go. Now."
Smiling at Prue, Phoebe walked up the stairs.
Eyeing Prue skeptically, Leo asked, "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Really Leo, I will be fine. I, at least, have the comfort of knowing that it will be neither of my sisters that will be tortured next time he comes around. Piper has shown that she could handle it with no notice. I will be able to prepare myself and be ready for whatever comes. I will be fine. Really!" she said, trying to convince Leo.
"Okay, Prue." Leo said, not really convinced. "You know how to get in touch with me if you need to talk about anything."
"Yes. Now go to the elders and see if they can help us." Prue said with false confidence.
Upstairs Phoebe knocks on Piper's door. She doesn't get an answer. Opening the door, she asks, "Piper, can I come in?"
She looks in and sees that Piper is sleeping. Moving over to the bed, she slips in next to Piper. Tentatively, she touches Piper. When she did not receive a premonition she hugs her sister and murmurs, "It's so good to be able to touch you again. Piper, I love you so much!" Kissing Piper, she continues, "Sleep now, baby. Heal." Phoebe savors touching Piper after not being able to for so long. After a few minutes, Phoebe drifts off, joining Piper in sleep.
Downstairs Prue is contemplating her future. "Damn! I want to vanquish the master! Piper is hurting and I can't protect Phoebe either. I am useless as a protector!"
Just then the master appears. "So, Prue, your whitelighter got back early. Know that I won't make the same mistake next time. By now Phoebe should have had a premonition and you know that you are next. I would bet that she hasn't told you yet what is in store for you. Know that it has to do with water."
"You idiot! We will figure out a way to vanquish you!" Prue said.
"Oh you will, will you? You haven't yet. Don't think that your whitelighter will be able to help. Next time I won't be so careless. By the way, Piper still hasn't recovered has she? Maybe I didn't have to have her raped for my plan to work. She is weaker than even I thought."
"Don't you even say her name! She will pull through this."
"Well, if you say so. I doubt it. As for you, just remember it's going to be water for you." he said, then disappeared.
Sitting down, Prue holds her head in her hands and starts to cry softly. She knows that even though she defeated the demon of fear, she is still afraid of dying like her mother had.
Chapter 14
Piper is trapped inside a nightmare. The warlocks have finished raping her and are moving on to her sisters. There is nothing that she can do. She is unable to move. She starts yelling inside of her nightmare. "No!! Leave them alone!! This was only supposed to happen to me!"
Phoebe abruptly awakens when she hears Piper start to moan and whimper. She looks at Piper and immediately knows that Piper is having a nightmare. "Piper...Piper! Wake up!" She gently shakes Piper.
Piper jerks awake. "No! Get away from them!" she says before realizing that she is safe in her own bed. She feels arms wrap around her, comforting her. "Oh God, Prue!! It was so horrible!"
"Shh, sweetie. It's over now. You're safe." Phoebe said, softly stroking Piper's hair.
"What? Phoebe? I don't understand. Get away from me!" Piper said, trying to push her away.
"No. It's okay. I can touch you now, Piper." Phoebe told her then kissed her forehead gently.
Seeing that Phoebe was not thrown into a never-ending premonition, Piper relaxed into Phoebe's embrace. "I don't understand, Phoebe. How come you're able to touch me now?"
Afraid that Piper would not be able to handle the reason, Phoebe hedged, "We'll talk about it later. How do you feel, honey?"
Sighing deeply, trying to regain control of her emotions, Piper said, "Okay, I guess. My ribs are sore. Again!" Continuing in a much softer voice, she asked, "What happened, Pheebs? Was Leo really there?"
Smiling into the darkness, Phoebe answered, "Yes, sweetie, he was. He saved us. What do you remember?"
Trying to recall everything that happened, Piper said, "I remember that warlock hitting me and tearing my shirt open. After that...not much. I must have zoned out. I vaguely remember Leo. But I thought that I must have been dreaming that he was there."
"No, he really was there along with his whitelighter friend, Stephen." Phoebe filled her in on what had happened.
"So, I am safe for the time being. Until they decide to come for us again." Piper said.
"No, they won't do that again." Phoebe tried to reassure Piper.
Softly, Piper asked, "How do you know, Phoebe? They may just start over again the next time they get us."
"No. They won't."
"Have you had another premonition, Pheebs?"
"Piper, you're exhausted and I'm tired. Let's just get some sleep for now. We can talk about this tomorrow."
"No! You know something. Pheebs, we've been through this before. I need to know what is going on! Please? I can handle it."
Thinking it over, Phoebe knew that she had no choice. "Alright, the warlock lied to us. You are not going to be the only one tortured. I had a premonition. Prue is next."
Shaking her head, Piper said, her voice trembling, "No! Not Prue." Looking up at Phoebe, she continued, "It was bad enough when it was me. I will not be able to handle it if it is either of you guys being tortured." Tears were streaming down Piper's face.
"I know, sweetie, I know. Try to get some sleep. We will deal with it in the morning."
A couple of minutes had passed when Piper asked, "Pheebs?"
"Yeah?"
"In your premonition what were we doing?"
"All I saw was Prue. We weren't in the premonition." Phoebe said. Piper's question had triggered something. "You know what? Whenever I had a premonition before, I could clearly see me and Prue. What do you think this means?"
"Where is Prue, Pheebs?"
"Downstairs, I think."
"Get her up here. Get her up here right now." Piper said in desperation.
"Okay...okay" Phoebe responded getting out of bed and running to the door.
"Prue! Prue!" Phoebe shouted, running out into the hallway.
Coming out of her room, Prue almost collided with Phoebe, "What?! Is Piper okay?"
"Oh, thank God!" Phoebe said, almost crushing Prue in a desperate hug. "Piper's okay. We just want you to come and sleep with us. We don't want to be alone."
Eyeing Phoebe with skepticism, Prue responded, "Alright, but I know that you are holding something back from me, Phoebe. I understand what Piper meant now. Not knowing is worse."
Phoebe started to protest, but Prue interrupted, "It's okay. You don't have to tell me now. You can tell me tomorrow. Now, if you will lead the way, I need some sleep." Prue said, indicating Piper's room.
Following Phoebe into Piper's room, Prue said, "Hey, Piper. Miss me?"
Relieved that Prue was okay, Piper smiled and said, "Yes. Can we all sleep together? Just for tonight?"
Smiling at the childish tone she heard in Piper's voice, she said, "Of course. I wouldn't want it any other way. Scoot over. You have to be in the middle." She noticed that Piper was looking at her curiously, "You know, because Phoebe kicks."
"Hey! That's not fair!" Phoebe exclaimed getting in on the other side of Piper. All three girls were small enough to fit comfortably in Piper's queen size bed.
"It may not be fair, but it is true." Piper said almost cheerfully. Feeling safe in the middle of her sisters, she snuggled into the bed. It wasn't long before all three were asleep.
Phoebe was the first awake the next morning. She lay in bed, staring at her sisters. She thought that they were so beautiful. Looking at their young faces it was hard to imagine the hardships that they had been through. Phoebe wondered what they could do to end this ordeal.
Suddenly, Prue starts to stir. Opening her eyes, she sees that Phoebe is awake. "Hey, sis. What are you doing up so early?"
"Just looking at you guys. I can't believe how lucky I am to have sisters such as you."
Sitting up in bed, Prue asked, "How's she doing?"
Sighing and turning over on her back, Phoebe responds, "To tell you the truth, I don't know. I think better. She's worried about you."
Narrowing her eyes, Prue asked, "You didn't tell her about your premonition, did you?"
"She didn't give me a choice. Why do you think we went looking for you in the middle of the night?"
"Pheebs, she may not be able to handle it yet." Prue said.
Running a hand through her hair, Phoebe exclaimed, "Don't you think I know that, Prue! But you know that I can't lie to her. She knows if I do."
Seeing that Phoebe was suffering, Prue said, "I know. It's okay. We will figure this out."
"How can you sound so confident?" Phoebe said dejectedly.
"Because without hope there is nothing!" Prue stated emphatically.
Glancing at Piper's face, Phoebe said, "Why don't we go downstairs. I don't want to wake her. She needs to sleep."
"No. I don't think she needs to be alone. I don't want her to wake up by herself. I will go and take a shower. You stay with her."
Smiling, Phoebe shot back, "You want a shower first because you want to use all the hot water."
Chuckling, Prue said, "Maybe. Just stay with her. Once I'm done you can take a shower."
"Okay. Okay, Prue. You win." Waving her hand, Phoebe continued, "Go. Take your shower." Phoebe curled up to Piper. She couldn't quit touching her sister. It had been so long.
After a while, Prue went back into Piper's room. Phoebe looked to be asleep. "They are so cute." Prue thought. "I have to protect them. Even if it means my life."
Phoebe cracked open one eye. "Are you through?"
Smiling through the pain, Prue said, "Yes."
"Okay then. It's my turn." Phoebe got out of the bed and hurried to the shower.
Sitting down next to Piper, Prue started stroking Piper's hair. "I've always thought that you had the best hair out of the three of us. So beautiful. Not black and not light brown, but a color in between. I have often associated the word sable with your hair."
She was still stroking Piper's hair when Piper woke up. Squinting up at Prue, trying to regain full consciousness, Piper greeted Prue softly, "Good morning."
"Hey, my little one. How are you feeling?" Prue said.
Turning over, Piper winced, "Once again my ribs are sore. Do they pick out the most vulnerable part of your body before they attack?" she said lightly.
"I don't know. Maybe Leo can heal you once he gets back."
Piper nodded her head, "Maybe." Turning over to look at Prue, she continued, "How are you doing?"
"I am fine. I know that Phoebe told you that I would be next." Looking everywhere but at Piper, she continued, "I will be able to take it, Piper. You have to believe me."
Knowing that Prue would not be able to share her doubts, Piper said, "I do. But, if you need me just let me know."
Feeling relieved that Piper didn't push it, Prue said, "I will. I promise. Now why don't I go down and fix us some breakfast?"
"Okay. I love you, Prue." Piper said, almost wistfully.
"I love you more." Prue said walking out of the door.
Piper sat up in bed, thinking over everything that had happened. Neither of her sisters were in the room, so she didn't feel like she had to hide anything. She cried bitterly.
Unexpectedly the master was in her room. "My dear, why are you crying?"
Taken by surprise, Piper moved as far back toward the headboard as she could, "What do you want?"
"You know the answer, of course. The question is are you going to help me? I will hurt your sister. You can keep this from happening. All you have to do is what I tell you."
Considering the consequences, Piper listened.
Chapter 15
As Piper sat there and listened to the master, she became more and more heartbroken. She couldn't see any way out of their plight except by doing what the warlock was saying. She was becoming more and more despondent.
"Piper, dear, pay attention!" the master berated. "I know that you are having a hard time concentrating, but you need to fully understand what I am telling you." Starting to pace, the master continued, "You know what it is like to go through one of my torture sessions, but your sisters don't. Do you really want them to have to find out by experience what it is like to deal with the consequences of what occurs during the sessions? And you, my dear, have never been made to watch one of them go through this type of torture. Do you think you can bear to watch it? Knowing all the pain and emotional trauma that your sisters will be experiencing? You are the most kind hearted of the Charmed Ones, do you really think you can live through the breakdown of one of your sisters? Normally they would turn to you. But, you haven't fully recovered from your own trauma yet. You won't be capable of helping them through theirs."
Piper was shaking her head, attempting to deny what the warlock was saying. "You know what I am saying is true. And, furthermore, your sisters won't be able to recover, emotionally. Prue will be devastated. She is proud and won't ask for help. Once she breaks, she won't be able to pick up the pieces of her life. You know that. And without you and Prue, Phoebe will only be a shell of her former self." Piper flinched when he reached to move a strand of hair away from her face. Tenderly, he continued, "You know what will end this, Piper. Your sisters do not have to go through any of this."
"No! We can't give our powers to evil." But, Piper didn't sound as convinced as she once was.
"Of course you can. If you don't they will be destroyed emotionally. Either way I will get your powers. The choice of how it happens is up to you." Appraising Piper, he continued, "I will let you think about your decision. But not for long. Remember that Prue will be next. She is still terrified of water despite what happened with the demon of fear. It should be a great session. However, do try to talk your sisters into giving up their powers. Oh, and one more thing to think about, I won't allow as much time between Prue and Phoebe's session for them to recover. That way all three of you will be emotionally distraught at the same time. My plan is really coming together. This is beautiful!" Clapping his hands together, he said, "Until next time." He was gone.
Piper curled up on her side, clutching a pillow to her chest. Thinking about what he said, she knew that she couldn't let Prue go through any kind of torture involving water. She had to prevent it somehow. But, she couldn't come up with a feasible alternative to giving up their powers. Tears started pouring down her face as she contemplated all the innocents that would be hurt if they were to give the master their powers. Eventually, she fell into a troubled sleep.
That's the way Leo found her when he orbed in. Her tear stained face broke his heart. The Elders were unable to tell him anything about the warlock and he knew that when he told the sisters that he had no new information, they would be devastated. Gently, he slid in beside Piper and took her into his arms, cradling her tenderly. As if she could feel all the love he had for her, she moved into his embrace, absorbing his warmth. Leo held her for a long time. His admiration for her courage and spirit overwhelmed him. He couldn't believe what she had to endure. If he had only known he would never have left her for his last assignment. Training a new whitelighter seemed meaningless next to protecting the love of his life. Thinking of the pain she'd suffered, a tear trickled down his cheek. Whispering, he said, "I vow to never let this happen to you again, Piper. From now on I am always going to be here for you . I promise!" Nuzzling his face into her hair, he held her tightly. He wasn't quite sure if he was trying to comfort her or if he was trying to reassure himself that she was okay.
Downstairs, Prue and Phoebe were talking. "How do you think Piper really is?" Phoebe asked.
Sighing deeply, Prue answered, "I'm not sure. I'd like to believe that everything will work out, but I just don't know." Getting up to replenish their coffee, she continued, "She hadn't really come to terms with the first attack yet, let alone, this one. Thank God Leo got us out of there before they started raping her." Sitting down she looked at Phoebe, "I think that deep down Piper is stronger than you or me. It just takes her a while to realize it. She has always been able to handle situations better than we can. I get angry and shut down. You panic and run away. Piper accepts the problem. She may try to deny it at first, but ultimately, she finds a way to fix it and then she moves on. She is a healer." Giving Phoebe a wry smile, she said, "She's fixed us so many times that I have lost count."
Smiling widely at Prue's last remark, Phoebe responded, "Yeah, you're right, as always. But, I do not always run when there is a problem."
Cocking an eyebrow, Prue shot back, "Oh yeah? How many times has Piper sought you out to bring us back together after one of our fights? Let's face it, without her we would have stopped speaking to each other by the time you were 10 and I was 14."
Chuckling, Phoebe said, "Yeah, I suppose you're right."
"It takes great strength, diplomacy, and a ton of resiliency to accomplish that. That's why I think Piper is stronger than we are."
"You have a point. Shouldn't she be down here by now? Do you think we should check on her?"
"Go ahead. I'll just stay down here and work on something for us to eat."
Giving Prue a sharp, knowing look, Phoebe asked, "Are you okay, Prue?"
Trying to hide her fear, Prue nodded, "I'm fine. Now go and check on Piper."
Not really believing Prue, but knowing that she wouldn't open up to anyone except Piper, Phoebe started out of the kitchen. She abruptly stopped. Turning around, she went to Prue and hugged her fiercely. "Prue, I know I'm not Piper, but if you need to talk, I'll be here for you, okay?"
Hugging Phoebe back with a desperation that gave away her vulnerability, Prue responded, "I know, sweetie. Thanks." After giving a final squeeze, Prue continued, "Now go to Piper."
Phoebe walked up the stairs, racking her brain, trying to find ways to help both of her sisters while coming up with a solution to the warlock problem. She had never really been in this position before. Usually, she was the one being taken care of by one or both of her sisters. Typically, despite their differences, Prue was always the one that protected her while Piper took care of her emotionally. It was odd finding herself in these roles now.
Unfortunately, she wasn't doing a very good protecting any of them. Piper had almost been raped despite the forewarning the premonition had given them. They, and specifically, Phoebe, could not figure out a way to vanquish this warlock. Added to this was the fact that Piper was not opening up to Phoebe about the attacks. Phoebe didn't understand what was going on with Piper, but she knew that Piper was starting to withdraw more and more. It wasn't like Piper to keep anything from Phoebe. She had shared everything with Phoebe for as long as Phoebe could remember. Sometimes it seemed that Phoebe was older that Piper. This was because Piper was so innocent and naive about things. Like the time Piper was in 10th grade. She had asked Phoebe if she should accept a date with one of the most popular guys at school. Piper couldn't understand why he would want to go out with her and thought that she was the butt of some cruel joke. Phoebe had convinced her to go, reminding Piper of all the reasons why he would want to date her. Piper had accepted and had an excellent time. And while the relationship had not worked, Piper had, at least, gained some added confidence in herself as a result of their talk.
Quietly opening Piper's door, Phoebe smiled at the picture of Piper and Leo snuggled together in sleep. She knew that Piper would feel safe within his embrace. Leo had been good for her sister, bringing Piper out of her shell. Piper was not as shy now as she had been before Leo had entered their lives. As she gazed at them, Piper
