... The hockey team played the annual game with the alumni on very bad ice this afternoon and as it was a very informal affair, the outcome was disputed. We played overtime. Mother and Dad went out to dinner tonight and as usual Beany went out too and I was left alone to listen to the radio and read... The Stanford-Alabama game was broadcast from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena late this afternoon. About 30 stations were in the hookup - from coast to coast...
Tuesday, January 4, 1927
... Went down to Needham this afternoon and got a hair cut and a hockey stick. The driving was terribly slippery. Had the first rehearsal for the Senior Play tonight. Just read over the first act. I only fell down once on the way up and back. That was better than most of them...
Thursday, January 6, 1927
... We played Wellesley over there and got beaten in a darn good game, 2-1. I scored our goal...
Friday, January 7, 1927
...Had a rehearsal this afternoon that went all right except for the fact that half the cast never showed up. Went skating tonight and had a great time... Someone had a jug of hard cider on the ice. I drank quite a lot, but not too much...
Sunday, January 9, 1927
... I didn't arise til past noon... I fooled around with the radio and was astonished when the old relic brought in Miami and Havana. Could only go west as far as Cincinnati and north as far as Toronto...
Wednesday, January 12, 1927
... Spent the afternoon on the pond shoveling. Did quite a bit but didn't have much help. There was a rehearsal tonight. Studied and listened to the radio afterward...
Thursday, January 13, 1927
... We played in Needham today and got smeared 8-0. They were a good deal better than they were last year, and Jerry Walsh in our goal wasn't so good. The score does not show the difference in two teams as a whole, but merely in the goalies. We got as many shots at their goal as they did at ours. Came home, ate supper, and went to a rehearsal. Went right from rehearsal down to the pond where we finished cleaning it off about 11. Came home, ate, and went to bed about 11:30. A hard day, and how.
Sunday, January 16, 1927
... I took down the antenna and sandpapered off the corroded stuff, for it has been up nearly three years without having been touched, and strung it around in the attic where it won't blow down. The radio went better tonight then it has for a year. Got a flock of stations...
Monday, January 17, 1927
... Had a rehearsal this afternoon. Tonite the cast went over to the Natick Theater where some Club gave exactly the same play we are working on... If we do as well, everything will be O.K. Came home listened to the radio for awhile and then went to bed without studying.
Sunday, January 23, 1927
Cold enough last night to freeze, so we had hockey. Fooled around on a new pond on the Grammar School playground this morning and this afternoon, played hockey on Parker's Cove... I played in the goal most of the time...

... We played over in Weston today and after three overtime periods we had to quit without either side scoring. They had wonderful ice and a fine rink. The temperature was 2 below all afternoon...
Thursday, January 27, 1927
... Paul Schaffner was out of school today because playing hockey yesterday he froze his feet. The mid year examinations are held today and tomorrow. All I had today was English which was rather easy. I ought to have made out rather well but I may be fooled...
Wednesday, February 2, 1927
.. Played Walpole here this afternoon. First home game of the season. It was quite warm and the ice was very bad. We won 3-2. I scored one and Beany twice. The Walker brothers win another game! There was a rehearsal tonite...
Friday, February 4, 1927
... We played over in Canton and they beat us 1-0 in overtime. And at that they did not score a goal. Charlie Corriveau accidentally pushed it into our goal in a scuffle, trying to clear it. A tough one to lose...
Thursday, February 17, 1927
... Our play tonight went off great. I only suffered a lapse of memory once and then I walked around without speaking until it came to me, and they said the audience never knew the difference. The house was packed and everybody said it was the best Senior Play ever given. I had a lot of fun...
Sunday, February 20, 1927
Blizzard all night and all day today... Nobody went out doors because there was nothing to go out for. Consequently, with the whole family cooped up, there were a lot of scrapes and snarling. A rather hectic day. Robert's birthday, by the way, he is 4.
Monday, February 28, 1927
... School today was very boring as usual... Was very sleepy all day as were most of the people in school. They came back to school to recover from vacation....
Thursday, March 3, 1927
... We played Norwood here this afternoon and tied after 46 minutes of play, 1-1. They got their goal in the first of the game while I was playing in the goal... I felt like a fool. Jerry Walsh, the regular goalie, was late and I was glad when he came...
Wednesday, March 9, 1927
... Washed the car this afternoon which was some job as it has not been done for years. Learned today that we are to play Norwood one more game, but this time at the Boston Arena, 5 P.M. Friday. We must beat them...
Friday, March 11, 1927
... Played hockey today in the Arena and won 3-1. Beany scored twice for us. The ice was a lot larger than we have been used to, and I never was so pooped in my life. We went to the movies tonight in Wellesley...
Saturday, March 12, 1927
... Worked around all morning and read most of the afternoon. Everyone went out after supper, and as someone had to stay with the kids I was the goat. So I fortified myself with a good book, my pipe, some candy, and the radio and enjoyed myself til after 1 A.M. when the family came in, one by one.
Friday, March 18, 1927
... Went down to Needham this afternoon to see the girls get beaten by a score of 32-19. The score was tied when Needham sent their first team onto the floor in the last five minutes and scored 14 points to Dover's 1. Rather a dirty trick. The family went to the movies and once more I remained at home consoled only by book, pipe, candy, and radio. Not a very exciting evening.
Saturday, March 19, 1927
... Great for fires but there was only one small one today. I worked around all morning and read this afternoon... Billy Crane, the local scout master was down tonight and wanted me to come in as assistant scout master. I am thinking it over...
Wednesday, March 23, 1927
Rather cold, but we had our first official baseball practice. About time, too..
Thursday, March 24, 1927
... I stayed after school today with Mr. Harris for a little physics as I have done every day this week. We had quite a talk today, however. I came home and started to study at 7:45. Had a book report due for tomorrow and like a fool I have been putting it off. So I had to read the book and write the report. I was working on it when this day gave place to the one on the next page.
Friday, March 25, 1927
Worked all night and finished the fool thing about 6 A.M. Then I read til breakfast time. No use going to sleep for such a short time. I had a terrible job keeping awake in school this morning but it was all right this afternoon. We had baseball practice after school...
Saturday, March 26, 1927
... Spent the whole of it with the Boy Scouts tearing down the old horse sheds behind the Congregational Church. They are going to use the lumber in a new cabin out in the woods...
Thursday, March 31, 1927
... We went to the movies in Needham tonight. They always have two pictures there but we were interested only in Clara Bow in 'It'. She sure is a mean female. The snakiest I have seen for a long while.
Sunday, April 3, 1927
... This evening I drove in town, taking Mother, Red and the Chickering sisters, Antoinette being down from college on a week's vacation. We went to the Capitol. A good show and better vaudeville. It was such a success that Mother plans to make it a Sunday night institution. Dad wouldn't go. He doesn't like the movies.
Saturday, April 9, 1927
... Mr. Railey called me up late this afternoon and made a date. He came around about 8:30. We drove around in the city while he talked to me. He said he has wanted to talk to me for a couple of years, but never dared to until now. He sure relieved himself. The gist of it was that it is time for me to come out of my shell - see things and go places. I agreed with him. "Fine", he said, "Let's begin now." So we went into the new Hotel Statler and ate supper. That was about 11:15. I was sold completely on an idea he wants to try out with me. If I go through with it I never need to worry about some things again. To bed quite late, of course.
Monday, April 11, 1927
... There was baseball practice this afternoon or rather there was supposed to be practice. We were just beginning when there was a fire and practice was ruined. When the fire was out it was too late to continue... Mr. Railey came out and plans between us matured somewhat...
Tuesday, April 12, 1927
... Read all afternoon, studied after supper and went to bed early. Where in hell is the excitement in this damn hole?...
Wednesday, April 13, 1927
... We opened our baseball season with Medfield at Medfield today winning 16-3. I pitched eight innings and they got four hits and one run off me, while I got 13 strikeouts. I am wondering how I will go against a stronger team. Beany pitched the last inning. Dad went over to the hospital this morning to have an infected finger opened. He was back before noon and drove over to the game, so he is O.K. I bet he will be sick tomorrow, though...
Sunday, April 17, 1927
Very interesting day. About 1:30 the fire alarm rang and then came the second alarm. I went. The fire was between Dover and Westwood. We put out the fire in Dover and just before dark went around into Westwood to help them. The minute we came in the Westwood men went out. About 10:30 we went to Camp Storrow for coffee and sandwiches. Filled up water tanks and chemicals on the trucks and went back. The fire line was about three miles long in terrible brush, but we had it out about 2:30 Sunday morning. We were gathered ready to go out when we saw the glow that showed it had started up again way back in. Three of us with pumps and water went in. I carried water. We were gone nearly half an hour. We went back to Camp Storrow ate again, and then volunteers were called to go up on a high rock and keep look out. Four of us including myself, went. We stayed there til about 4:30 when we went back to Camp Storrow. The gang were in one of the bunkhouses fighting and fooling instead of sleeping. We, from the watch, hadnít been in 15 minutes when we were called out again. It was 7 A.M. when we got back. The trucks went back to the town to get filled up and they left only three of us including me again, to stay and keep watch. We were there til nearly noon before the others came back. In the meantime, the wind had shifted and the fire came roaring back. We cornered it with a pond on one side and had it all out by 5 P.M. When we ot back I lit for home, took a bath, and hit the hay. A good fat pay check I get besides a great adventure. It was a real forest fire.

Wonderful day. I worked around off and on all day... There were a couple of fires around 5 o'clock but they didn't last long. Went out with Mr. Railey after supper. We had a long ride and talk. I drove from Newton to Shrewesbury and back to Dover, about 25 miles. He has a wonderful car - Cadillac...
Thursday, April 21, 1927
This morning I went to Framingham and got my license on the Buick. I didn't have any trouble at all. Lee went along to see what a Massachusetts examination was like and said it was much harder than a New York examination. Painted screens all afternoon and tonight went to a bridge party in Harding at Issy's house. Had a good time, got the booby prize...
Friday, April 22, 1927
Mr. Railey called up this morning and wanted me to go to Philadelphia with him. I accepted and he said to be ready about 5 P.M... We left here about 6 P.M. in a pouring rainstorm. We had to travel slowly and only reached Hartford by 11 P.M. So we stopped there, planning to get out and on our way by 6 A.M. tomorrow.
Saturday, April 23, 1927
We left Hartford about 7 A.M. and had breakfast in New Haven. We arrived in New York City about 11 A.M., parked the car and took the noon train for Philadelphia. Ate on the train. Arriving in Philly we put up at the Ben Franklin and Mr. Railey started calling up his business friends. I went out soon after, while he was busy with them, and looked the town over. Came back in time for dinner or rather late for it, with the result that when I went out afterward to look for a show, there were nothing but S.R.O. signs at all theaters. When I got back they sent the bellboy out for some so-called Scotch of which I declined to sample. Went to bed instead. The bellboy stayed and helped them put it away.
Sunday, April 24, 1927
Woke up rather late, very late, in fact, breakfasting about noon. I spent the afternoon in the room reading the papers. We took a train for New York about 6 P.M. Arriving in New York, we got the car and tried to get into a theater but they were all too full. So about 10:30 we started for Boston, intending to put up somewhere on the road.
Monday, April 25, 1927
Passed through New Britain, Conn. about midnight and kept on going, driving all night. We had breakfast in Providence about 4:30 A.M. and got into Dover about 6 A.M. Made great time, actual running time was just about 7 hours. A stretch of road between Westerly and Providence we came 28 miles in 30 minutes. Went to bed as soon as I landed and slept til noon. Went to school the afternoon session. Had baseball practice after school...
Thursday, April 28, 1927
... There was a fire out back that started from the old brush pile I started yesterday while it was raining. I never imagined it would dry so quickly. The fire department made short work of it, however. Went to the movies tonight in Needham, alone, and for a ride afterwards, also alone. Crazy? Perhaps.
Tuesday, May 10, 1927
... We played Medway here today and lost 11-5. We had an entirely makeshift team, as four of our regulars could not play. The infield and outfield never played worse ball. I pitched and got 19 strikeouts and 3 put outs out of the 27. If I had had my support, we would have won without any trouble. Went to the movies tonight in Needham...
Friday, May 13, 1927
... After supper some of us ran around the block - up Farm St. to Medfield Junction and down Centre St. - which is just nine miles. This is the order of the finish: Crook Wakelin, Louis Roscoe, Mitchel, Leavitt, and me last. I was about 5 minutes behind but I did much better than I expected to. I never thought I would finish. That was why John came around in his Ford - to carry me home. There were a flock of kids on bikes as a cheering section. My time was 65 minutes, non-stop. Went to bed directly on getting home.
Monday, May 16, 1927
... Stayed after school tonight and Mr. Harris gave me the run of the lab. I cooked up some horrible stinks trying to remember what I learned in Chemistry last year. Joe McGill was down here tonight...
Wednesday, May 18, 1927
My eighteenth birthday... Studied this afternoon. Went to the movies tonight but didn't know I could have the car til about 7:45. I tried every girl in town, but no luck. They were all busy so I took Keith Bowden.
Friday, May 20, 1927
... We ran around the nine mile block, the one we went last week. I had to
quit about half way around because the bottom of my left foot was hurting
as if my arch had fallen or something...

Sunday, May 29, 1927
... Howard came around this morning with a car he has recently acquired - a Buick with a homemade body, nothing but two seats and a chest in back - very naked. It's a good car, though. We played ball this afternoon here, Natick town team beating us 5-0. After supper Beany, Howard and I with Chick, Micky and Issy went in town to the Met...

... I studied all morning and about noon time I fixed Beany's Ford. The gas tank has been dropping off lately, so I put in new brads all around and went for a ride... After supper Howard, Beany, Eugene White and I went in town on the train. We saw Criss-Cross, Fred Stone's musical comedy. It wasn't half bad...
Thursday, June 16, 1927
... Worked all afternoon making the terrace presentable. Went to the dentist's after supper, only had to have my teeth cleaned... Beany has got a dog. He said that as long as I was going away to school next year; he must have some company, so he has the dog. Of course, I felt quite flattered.
Tuesday, June 21, 1927
... Mother and Dad went to Brewster and back today to open up the cottage. We are going down Saturday for good, that is all except me. I won't be through with school til Wednesday. Got a notice from Cushing Academy today saying that my application for admission next year had been accepted. It is quite a relief to be able to say definitely what I am going to do.
Friday, June 24, 1927
...Took the exams in French and Physics today. I got 89 in English, 55 in Math, 73 in Physics and my French hasn't been completely corrected yet, but Mrs. Allen assured me of about 70. That wasn't so tough. Played ball in Medfield this afternoon, high school teams, and lost 7-6 in about the best game of the year. I pitched and was very erratic, being effective one inning and rather bad the next. However, in the 7th I pitched exactly nine balls and they were all strikes, four were fouls. They got three runs in the last of the 9th, sewing up the game.
Monday, June 27, 1927
... The family is down for good, of course, but Beany drove up with Dick and Howard and I came up a little later. We made the 100 mile flat in 2 hours and 20 minutes, which is darn good. We drove in relays of one hour each, making 41 mile the first hour, 40 the second, and the rest in 20 minutes. After supper we all went up to the Town House where I severed all connections with D.H.S. by receiving a diploma...

... Tonight was the Senior Reception and dance. I stayed, as of course, I had to, for the receiving line and the grand march but I beat it after that was over. Emily Bostwick and I (after I had changed my clothes and borrowed some money) went in town to the Statler Hotel and sat around eating and listening to the dance orchestra. I was sorry that I couldn't dance. We had a much better time, though than if we had stayed in Dover. We got back for the last dance,..
