TO THE INHABITANTS OF DOVER ... HEAR YE! HEAR YE!
WHEREAS - On the eighth day of February in the year of our Lord 1836 the inhabitants of the District of Dover met at the Public Meeting House and Voted to Petition the Honorable Legislature to be incorporated into a Town, and
WHEREAS - The Selectmen of the District of Dover did Petition the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives in General Court, respectfully representing that by a recent examination they had ascertained that the District had then more than one hundred fifty rateable Polls, a sufficient number to qualify for Incorporation, and
WHEREAS - The Town of Medfield held no cause why the Prayer of said Petition should not be granted, and
WHEREAS - On the 31st day of March 1836 the Senate and the House of Representatives in General Court assembled and by the authority of the same did pass an Act to incorporate the territory known as the District of Dover into a Town by the name of Dover, to have all the privileges and subject to all the duties and liabilities of similar corporations, and
WHEREAS - On Monday the second day of May 1836, at four o'clock in the afternoon the inhabitants of the District of Dover qualified to Vote in District affairs did meet and Vote to allow and approve the said Act of the Legislature, and
WHEREAS - In this year of our Lord 1986, one hundred and fifty years have passed since said Incorporation, and the present inhabitants are of a mind to commemorate and celebrate the anniversary year of said Incorporation,
NOW THEREFORE - We, the Selectmen of the Town of Dover, do hereby PROCLAIM THE YEAR 1986 SHALL BE, AND IS, THE SESQUICENTENNIAL YEAR OF THE TOWN OF DOVER, and the period from April I to May 11, 1986 shall be a time of celebration of Special Sesquicentennial Events and Activities, and do hereby invite and encourage all the inhabitants of the Town of Dover, and all others, to participate in and enjoy the celebrations and festivities that will commemorate this proud and historic year.
GIVEN UNDER OUR HANDS AND SEAL this fifteenth day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Eighty-six.
