SCRIPOPHILY, The definition of which is the collecting of old stocks and bonds that usually are of no monitary face value or worth. The hobby was born during the early 1970's when many significant items of printed paper and paper of historical value became readily availible for sale. Many collectors of coins, stamps or paper currency (like myself) during that time also became interested in this endeavor as an extension of those fasinating hobbies.
Today there are many collectors the world over who spend countless hours in search of that scarce, rare, or popular stock / bond certificate. These avid collectors come from many fields of personal employment to relish and enjoy this hobby's many aspects. Some of these same collectors also consider scripophily a valid investment persuit. Many collect for the historical significance, or the beauty of the older stock & bond artwork that is found printed in various colors of very ornate engraved vignettes. Still others who prefer the collection of autographs can be found keeping a constant vigil for that signed certificate of a famous person. Collecting interests also include topical categorys, such as railroads, mining, automobile, aviation or financial certificates.
If you think you may be interested in collecting antique stocks or bonds, there may be a stamp or coin show in your immeadiate area that will have dealers who can help you with questions on were to find more information locally. Check the listings in your newspaper under stamps and coins, or locate a copy of "The Bank Note Reportor" in your local library for listings of upcoming area shows. A few books on the subject of scripophily can also be found in most public library reference sections.
