Little Rita Faye was
born on November 4, 1944 in Whitesboro, TX to Smiley and Kitty Wilson. By
the age of 9 she was stealing the hearts of country music fans with her release
on MGM records of "I Fell Out Of A Christmas Tree", which was written by
the great Fred Rose and Hy Heath.
I know of one heart that she stole and that was of my grandmother's. My
grandmother named me after her in 1954. All I was ever told about her was
that she sang "I Fell Out of A Christmas Tree" and "Johnny's Got A Sweetheart"
and that her name was Little Rita Faye. Well.....was I in for a surprise
when my curiousity about her finally kicked in!
Little Rita Faye was an extremely talented child. She recorded several songs
on MGM and later recorded for Capitol. She also did some recordings with
the autoharp. Around the age of 18 or 19 she played the autoharp on some
of Patsy Cline's recordings.
Below is a list of things that I have found through my research:
1. She recorded under
the names of : Little Rita Faye, Rita Faye, and Rita Faye Wilson.
2. Songs recorded on the MGM label: I Fell Out Of A Christmas Tree, The Miracle
Of Christmas, Johnny's Got A Sweetheart, I'm A Problem Child, Alabama, Mister
Light'nin' Bug, Don't You Play With Billy, Mommy's Little Helper, Lovesick
Blues, and Why Don't You Love Me.
3. Songs recorded on the Capitol label: Hideaway Honey, Promise Me Anything,
Tiny Teardrops, and Nothing Else To Lose.
4. She is on several videos of the Grand Ole Opry back in the 50's.
5. Tribute #3/Jim Reeves: Memories Video: Rita Faye sings "You Don't Have
To Be A Baby To Cry"
6. Tribute #7/Jimmy Dickens: Treasure Video: Rita Faye sings "Boll Weevil".
7. Classic Country 3 0f 12 Video: Rita Faye sings with The Jordanaires "You
Can't Have My Love".
8. Little Rita Faye: Vibrant Tones Of Sacred Autoharp...Capitol Records.
9. Rita Faye Wilson is credited on some of Patsy Cline's recordings playing
the autoharp. One of these songs is "Leavin' On Your Mind".
I'm sure this list is not complete by a long shot. Hopefully, as my research
continues more information can be added here.
Rita Faye is now living in Texas. She is married to Earl Sinks, (Remember
him?) Hint: The Crickets
