The John M. Duffield Cemetery

The John M. Duffield Cemetery

The John M. Duffield Cemetery is located in Clay County, WV, off Rt. 4 about 1 mile above the O’Brion’s Creek Road. The unpaved road travels up the hillside past the "Jack" Duffield house, and on up through the pasture to the top of the mountain. The road is rough and requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle most of the year. Several graves are unmarked except for cement squares with no names or dates. The grounds are well kept, thanks to Ralph and Diane Nottingham. Charles William Duffield, Grandfather of Martha Duffield who was the first to be buried there, originally owned the grounds for the cemetery. The date was November 16, 1870. She was the 3-year-old daughter of John McHenry Duffield who donated the land and for whom the cemetery is named. The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking and seems very close to Heaven.
