OUR
GENEALOGY TREE
The WORLD
WIDE WEB out there
is an mighty large place. There is
so much information out there and it
seems like that information is scattered
every which way. We find ourselves
going so deep sometimes I am not sure
we can get out. The
pictures may take a long time to
load so you may want to scoot down
to the bottom of the page while
the pictures are loading. There starts
the beginning of
our, Kenneth
Olive and Ruth
Shrum , genealogy tree.
We are in the process of gathering
more leads on our ancestors and will
be adding to the tree as time
permits. At this time we have 773 entries of our
ancestors and decendents...........

Hello, my name is Ken and this
is my family. My wife is Ruth.
Above her is our oldest daughter,
Audra. Next to her is our son,
Kevin. And to the right is
our daughter, Rhonda. This picture
may be a bit old because all of
the kids have since grown up and
moved on with their lives
.
I worked for Pacific Telephone, AT&T
and Lucent Technologies
for thirty years and have since retired.
I still contract back to Lucent. It
just seems liked I retired while I
was still young. Ruth is still
working for an nationwide financial services
company. Kevin has given us three
grandchildren: Bryanna, Alex and Cheyanne.
Kevin has been working for an underground
utilitiy company as a foreman. Audra
is not married and has her own
Family Fun store. She has worked
her way up through the company working
at the local store. Then she
moved to another store. She then
got her own store above San Francisco.
She just recently moved to a central
valley store. It is an training store.
Rhonda has two daughters, Chantel and
Chelena. She was living and working
here in Ventura, but they decided to
move up to the central valley to
be close to her sister.
This is where we live. Ventura-by-the-sea.
Ventura's size is just right for us.
The population is probably approaching 100.000
people at this time. Located 30
miles south of Santa Barbara and 60
miles north of Los Angeles. Far enough
away from LA to be away from
the big city, but close enough if
we want to take part in the many
attractions and entertainment facilities that
Los Angeles has to offer. Ventura
sets against the foothills of the Las
Padres National Forest and has the
great Pacific Ocean in front of us.
Ventura is only 300 yards wide downtown.
The town spreads out as you go
South. Across the sea we have
in our view the chain of the
Channel Islands. Surfing is great in
Ventura and at the county line. (As
heard in the Beach Boys song "Surfin'
USA") Ventura was once noted
for having the longest wood pier on
the Pacific Coast. " Was", because
a storm in 1997 took off 385
feet from the end of the pier.
They hope to get that repaired sometime.
To access some of the features
and articles of Ventura, click on Ventura
County Star-Free-Press and scroll down through
an abbreviated on-line version of our
local paper.
HOBBIES
My wife and myself enjoy
digging around in some of California's
rivers (mostly northern California), panning for
gold. That gold was the source of
a lot of our population back around
1850. We belong to the Gold
Prospectors of America club. They list all
of the claims that we are allowed
to prospect on. We also belong to
a Treasure Hunters club. We use a
metal detector to look for coins, jewlery,
junk (plenty), and other artifacts.
It is a pretty easy hobby, being
able to stop any time, any place,
take the detector out of the trunk
and start looking. My wife has been
downloading recipies off of the net.
She is putting these recipies into
a software program Cooking
Lite (on her own computer. We need
two so there is no fighting). She
then shares these recipies with our
daughters and other relatives. I enjoy
scanning through many channels, at lighting
speed of course, of TV off
of our 9 foot dish antenna. I
then like to push those channels through
our surround sound system. Naturally I
spend many hours on the internet (it
might show). We both like oldies music,
having collected many songs. I even
like to download songs off of the
internet. A favorite site is The
Wanderers.com . They allow you to download
them and I save them to an zip
drive. My wife and I have aslo
been involved in old cars most of
our married life. Below you will
see some of the old cars and
hot rods that we own or have owned.
Outside of the usual street rods
driven during my high school days,
this was my first real HOT ROD.
Purchased as an basket case vehicle in
the latter part of 1964. The
car is an 1926 Model T Ford coupe.
Some of the work was already done,
but we took it all apart and
cleaned everything. We redid some of
the structual and cosmetic items. We
painted it ourselves, using Cinnimon Red
laquer paint. At that time the
running gear we used was an 265 ci
stock Chevrolet V8 engine with a 2
barrel carburator. Power was put through
a Chevrolet Powerglide transmission. It put
that power to the ground through a
Pontiac rear end. The inside was
black naughahyde. The usual tachometer and
8 track player was installed. We
took the Model T to many car
shows in California and Nevada. The
car brought home many throphies.
After getting the Model T going
all those places,
our kids started to come into being.
The 26 T could only seat two
people and well, I had seen this
old sedan...........So I talked to the
wife and she said to check it out.
Well, it was a 1931 Chevrolet Special
Sedan. However, it was all in
pieces. The seller actually had two
cars, a coupe and the sedan.
All the parts were mixed together.
Some of the chrome work had already
been done and was still wrapped up
and in his house. The coupe was
covered up and outside in the elements.
The sedan shell was in his basement.
Both cars were going to be used
to make one good car.......So naturally I
bought them and brought both of them
home. The time was about 1970.
I have many pictures of the restoration.
Body off frame, complete frame workup.
Body work was done by myself.
The wife and I took a night course
in upholstering and did all the seats
and door panels in class. We
did the headliner at home. At
the time we did not know about keeping
everything stock so we used crushed
gold velvet as the upholstery material.
We then joined the Vintage
Chevrolet Club of America and soon learned
of our errors. But too late.
I painted the car the same color as
the 26 T with black trim. The
car has gone through all three of
our children and is still used. If
you look closely, you can see our
granddaughter, Chantel, in the front seat.
Having enjoyed the 26 T and the
1931 Chevy
for quite a few years I t hought I
needed another.........I had come across an
1918 Reo 7 passenger touring car in
an garage only 4 miles from home.
Reo stands for the initials of the
builder, Random E. Oldsmobile. The
car looked liked it was just parked
in the garage and left there many years
ago. The car was complete right
down to the gold tire valve stem
covers. The car was last registered
in Wisconsin in 1934. The title
is an 8 1/2 by 11 inch form.
It bears the yearly date stamps from
1918 until 1934. The original 1918
license plates are still on it.
Well, I have completed the body
off frame restoration and most of the
motor so far. I have had the
vehicle quite a few years, but other
committments have kept me from completing
the restoration. Need to get back
to it soon....
