Kirtland/Pratt Family Tree
ver. 12 February 2006
in loving memory of my grandmother, Elizabeth Howard Longman (1905-1999).
note : most of these and other Kirtlands are buried at the cemetery (marked 'Cypress') on the east side of Route 154 in Saybrook Point, which is south of Old Saybrook CT. When you walk in through the gate, look immediately left, John Kirtland's grave is the second nearest, set off to the left, facing the road. Others are buried throughout the cemetery, mostly among the Pratts, Harts and Chapmans, in bunches. Many of the graves are illegible. Several have small standardized pietisms on their stones. If not killed early on by disease, it was common for Kirtlands to live actively into their 60s and sometimes into their 80s -- this in an era when life expectancy was short, even for those who made it to adulthood. The women often had twenty-plus year bearing spans -- again, not common in a day when so many women died at childbirth. Some Kirtlands, especially from Gideon's generation on, often spelled their name "Kirkland", and many of their descendants bear that name. My line is in red.

Ruth Kirtland (b. 03 Apr 1768, Old
Saybrook CT; d. 06 Jan 1830, Claremont NH) Gideon Kirtland
(b. 17 May 1731, Old Saybrook CT; d. 18 Apr 1805, Claremont NH) In Claremont NH in 1790 census; household : 2 males over 16, 2 females. (Note that Ruth got married in Oct 1790.) Captain in Revolutionary War, 1779 A Samuel Kirtland, of this generation, was "Revolutionary
War, Capt. Callups Co.". B. 1731/2, d. 04 Sept 1805, Old Saybrook CT).
There are two people described on graves as 'wife of Samuel Kirtland'; I could not tell whether they were both wives of this particular Samuel or of a cousin
or even a son : for instance, the undecipherable gravestone of a Samuel
Kirtland who appears to have died in Oct of 1830-something. The time frames
make for a lot of strange things. One wife was named Thankfull (d. 06 Jun
1784), the other Statira (b. 1757, d. 28 Jan 1839). Phillip Kirtland
(b. 28 May 1693, Old Saybrook CT; d. 23 Sep 1764, Old Saybrook CT John Kirtland

Son Samuel (b. 20 Nov 1741) was missionary to the Oneida Indians, and was father to a president of Harvard University. ---------- Parnell Kirtland (b. 16 Oct 1704, d. 26 Jul 1748, Old Saybrook CT) m. John Tully, 17 Feb 1730 (Son of William Tully & Abigail Mavarick.) Children: Parnell (b. 28 Jun 1732), John (b. 12 Mar 1736), Anne (b. 24 Nov 1737), Charlotte Elizabeth (b. 23 Apr 1739; m. Ambrose Whittlesey), Mary (b. 21 Jul 1742; m. Richard Dickinson), Sarah (b. 26 Jun 1745). Nathaniel Kirtland
(b. 14 Nov 1613, Sherrington, Bucks. England; d. 27 Dec 1686, Lynn MA) Parnell may have been related to the John Shipman who married Elizabeth Kirtland (b. 1688; see above). Or, she may have been the daughter of a Mr. Rand who was in the same social circle, but that could be a name problem relating to Nathaniel Jr's wife who was a Rand. They may have been married by Rev. Abraham Pierson (one of Southampton's first settlers and father of Yale's first president). Apparently Nathaniel's brothers Philip and John had come with him to Southampton by 1641 and had received land there, but left almost immediately. Nathaniel was offering to sell his brothers' Southampton land in 1642. Nathaniel continued to own land in Southampton after he had moved back to Lynn; legal documents about a fence on the property of Nathaniel Kirtland "of Lynn" were filed in 1648. children :
Philip Kirtland (b. 1585?, Codford,
Bucks. England; d. 01 Oct 1652 prob. Lynn MA) Resided at Sherrington, Bucks. England (between Warminster and Salisbury, across the stream from the current A36 road at Codford St Mary's, not far from Olney). Shoemaker. Came to MA at some time near that of his children, though on ship unknown. Received 10 ac. allotment of land around Lynn MA in 1638, as "Senior". John Kirtland (b. 1554, Eng.) |
