"The Blues Is A Healer" - John Lee Hooker

The widespread belief that the Blues has a sad effect on people can be disregarded when you read the above statement from one of the greatest Blues musicians of our era. The fact is, that the Blues has the opposite effect and modern psychology conferms it again and again, that the Blues has a healing effect. You can't overcome problems by staying silent about them, rather you have to talk about them or more to the point you should sing about them! In other words the Blues is a musical form in coping with problems by singing your frustrations away - thus comes the healing power.

Without any doubt the circumstances from where the Blues came from were anything but happy ones. In the last couple of centuries thousands of slaves were imported from Africa to work in the cottonfields and tobacco plantations of America. Nevertheless, the large range of human emotions between love and hate and between joy and sadness which was born out of this circumstances contributed to the increasing popularity of the Blues during the last 100 years.

Overall where popular music from Abba to Zappa is played regardless of the type you can always hear some bluesy elements in it. If the Blues never existed, then we would never have had the Music of Bill Haley, Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, etc. ...

Music is a worldwide language and the Blues plays a very important role in it. In my opinion the Blues builds the "basic vocabulary" of our contemporary music, because it speaks from the heart of the people to the heart of the people. It is this easy and uncomplicated form that both the young and the old can understand.

After hearing my CD some Blues purists might probably think that some of the songs have nothing to do with the Blues. But nobody should forget, that the Blues is a living language and it is in constant development and change. Therefore it should be quite logical that this debut album is different to the recordings of Robert Johnson of the 30's, Howlin' Wolf from the 40's, Muddy Waters or B.B. King from the 50's, Jimi Hendrix from the 60's, Eric Clapton from the 70's, or Stevie Ray Vaughan from the 80's. Ever since the Blues was born down to this day, there were so many Blues musicians trying to forge another link to this neverending Blues chain.

I am very happy to be a further link in this Blues chain with my first album as we approach the end of this century and millenium. With this album I hope to convince many more people of the healing power of this kind of music.

Dieses klare Statement von einem der größten Bluesmusiker unseres Jahrhunderts räumt auf unmißverständliche Art ein weit verbreitetes Vorurteil beiseite, nachdem der Blues die Menschen angeblich in eine traurige Stimmung versetzen würde. Genau das Gegenteil ist der Fall, und die therapeutische Heilwirkung ist durch die moderne Psychologie immer wieder bestätigt worden, denn man bewältigt Probleme nicht, indem man sie totschweigt, sondern indem man über sie spricht, beziehungsweise singt! So gesehen ist der Blues nichts anderes als musikalische Problembewältigung, und darin besteht eigentlich auch die heilende Kraft des Blues, sich nämlich sozusagen den Frust von der Seele zu singen.

Klar, die Umstände unter denen der Blues entstand, waren alles andere als erfreulich, als im Laufe der letzten Jahrhunderte Tausende aus Afrika verschleppte Sklaven auf den Baumwollfeldern und Tabakplantagen Amerikas schuften mußten. Nichtsdestotrotz trug die aus diesem Umstand heraus geborene Skala menschlicher Emotionen zwischen Liebe und Haß und zwischen Freude und Leid dazu bei, daß sich der Blues seit mehr als 100 Jahren einer immer stärker werdenden Beliebtheit erfreut.

Überall wo heute populäre Musik von Abba bis Zappa ertönt, lassen sich unabhängig von der Stilrichtung immer Elemente des Blues heraushören. Wenn es den Blues nicht gegeben hätte, dann hätte es niemals die Musik von Bill Haley, Elvis, den Beatles, den Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson etc. ... gegeben.

Musik ist eine Weltsprache und der Blues ist ein sehr wichtiger Teil von ihr. Meiner Meinung nach bildet er sogar den "Grundwortschatz" unserer zeitgenössischen Musik, denn der Blues spricht aus dem Herzen des Menschen zum Herzen des Menschen - und das auf eine sehr einfache und unkomplizierte Art, die alt und jung gleichermaßen verstehen können.

Möglicherweise wird es Bluespuristen geben, welche nach dem Hören dieser CD vielleicht der Meinung sein werden, daß manche meiner Songs und Arrangements wenig mit Blues zu tun haben. Hierbei darf jedoch niemand vergessen, daß der Blues eine lebendige Sprache ist und sich infolgedessen in einer ständigen Entwicklung und Veränderung befindet. Deshalb unterscheidet sich mein Debütalbum "Blues Gipsy" mit Sicherheit von den Aufnahmen eines Robert Johnson aus den 30er Jahren, eines Howlin' Wolf aus den 40er Jahren, eines Muddy Waters oder B.B. King der 50er Jahre, eines Jimi Hendrix der 60er Jahre, eines Eric Clapton der 70er Jahre oder eines Stevie Ray Vaughan der 80er Jahre. Seit den ersten Momenten des Blues bis zum heutigen Tag zieht sich eine ständig fortlaufende Kette von vielen Bluesmusikern hindurch, von denen jeder versucht hat ei weiteres Glied dieser Kette zu schmieden.

Ich freue mich sehr darüber mit diesem Album ein weiteres Glied in dieser langen Kette des Blues am Ende dieses Jahrhunderts und Jahrtausends sein zu dürfen und hoffe, damit noch viele Menschen von den befreienden Heilkräften dieser Musik überzeugen zu können.
