Rose Cecil O'Neill was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on June 25, 1874. After moving to Nebraska, she began her artistic career by winning a drawing contest sponsored by the Omaha World Herald. By age seventeen, she was illustrating for a Denver magazine. Encouraged by her family she went to New York and proceeded to make a name for herself as an illustrator.
In 1909, Rose created the Kewpie doll, a roly-poly elf with a fat child's body, small wings, and a turnip-top head. These cupids had appeared in head and tail pieces when Rose illustrated love stores in books and magazines. Edward Bok of the Ladies Home Journal cut out a number of these and sent them to Rose, asking if she could make a series of illustration of the little creatures. Rose insisted on writing the verse to accompany these illustrations. Thus the Kewpie, a benevolent elf who did good deeds in a funny way, was created.
Children began yearning for a Kewpie doll they could hold. The Kewpies as we know them today were created. May they bring joy to your life as they have for so many people world-wide for almost a century.
