The Sports Car Club of America defines A Formula Ford as:
I call them
The Formula Ford was invented in England in 1961 as an inexpensive single seat race car for driving schools. Since then it as grown much more complex and expensive. Since the development of the Swift DB1 in 1983 many Formula Ford constructors failed to remain competitive and stop building Ford chassis or went out of business. Among these Lola Cars Ltd. now famous for there Indy cars built the last of their 640 series of Formula Fords.
I order to keep costs under control several Formula classes and groups have formed for older Formula Ford Cars. In the SCCA theses have been Club Ford and Spec Ford. The rules for Club and Spec Ford vary form division to division. In the Southern Pacific Division the Club Ford legal cars are build prior to 1972 or listed in the 1973 - 1978 Eligibility list. Cars built after 1978 that have at least front or rear out-board suspension are classified as Spec Ford.
