Paint

I had planned from the very start of the project to paint my Sonex. Two main reasons, I had paint experience and I loved the looks of the first Sonex I saw up close. With it's red and yellow paint shining...I spent a lot of hours trying to come up with a paint scheme that was a little different, but I might have gone overboard a little.

Masking was a time consuming process

At least those were my feelings when I started masking for the multi-colored graphics. It took hours to make it come out like the computer layout. I used automotive base coat clear coat paint because I wanted to have the stripes done before trying to spray for gloss. I wanted a paint scheme that would make the plane appear longer and accent the curves in the design. I came up with some nice looking designs with straight lines, but I like the way this layout follows the curves on the fuselage.

This was the layout I came up with on my computer

Lots of parts to paint.

After it's all said and done. It was a LOT of extra work and expense and added weight. Kinda like the folks at sonex told us in the video. Would I do it again? Probably not. I'd try the polishing route and get into the air sooner and lighter, although I think it will turn heads at the fly-ins.

These curves are tricky by hand
