Planting a Reformed church in the Detroit area This web site is designed to provide information about a new Presbyterian church in the Detroit, Michigan, area. The Presbytery has now appointed a minister to labor in the development of the work, and Lord's Day services are being held weekly at Canton, Michigan. The Presbytery is committed to the glory of the Triune God, to the infallibility and inerrancy of Scripture, to the doctrine of the sovereign grace of God to sinners, and to the whole doctrine set forth in the Westminster Confession of Faith. We believe in following the Bible's directions about how God should be worshipped. We believe in warm preaching of sound doctrine, with application to the heart and conscience. We cherish the pursuit of personal godliness, and loving relationships among the people of God. The Presbytery has congregations in the United States, which operate under the oversight of a General Assembly in Scotland. The General Assembly provides historical continuity with a tradition of faithful adherence to sound doctrine and biblical patterns of worship. The Presbytery's objective is to establish new congregations across the United States, leading to the creation of an indigenous denomination committed to the same principles as those held at the Reformation in Scotland. Join us in prayer that the Lord Jesus would be exalted in the Detroit area as he builds his own kingdom, that the needs of his people there would be addressed by faithful preaching, that the lost would come to a saving knowledge of God's forgiveness and grace in Christ, and that wisdom would be given to our Presbytery in seeking to minister the word of God. Periodic Updates Return to this space to find fresh information about what we are doing, and upcoming events. Regular, weekly services on the Lord's Day are held at the historic Cherry Hill School, in Canton, Michigan. The school is a white brick building, located at 50440 Cherry Hill Road, at the intersection with Ridge Road. The time of the service is 3:30 p.m. on the Lord's Day afternoon. Rev. Sean W. Humby was appointed by the Presbytery to labor at the Detroit Preaching Station in his capacity as Church Planter and Evangelist. Rev. Humby resides in Canton, a short distance from the church's meeting place. The Detroit Preaching Station was formally organized at the meeting of Presbytery on November 17, 2007, and was placed under the oversight of a Session composed of two ministers and an elder elsewhere in the Presbytery, who between them have an accumulation of more than sixty years of experience in ordained ministry. A communion roll has been established for the Preaching Station, and members are being received. All the worship services observe the biblical purity and simplicity of the Scottish Reformed tradition, with preaching addressed to the heart and conscience. Rev. Humby is available to visit with anyone who may wish to ask further questions about the church, or who would like to meet with a gospel minister to receive spiritual help, counsel, and encouragement. He may be contacted at 734-402-7186 or sean.humby@att.net. The Detroit Preaching Station is a mission church which the Presbytery desires to see develop into a full congregation. Those who desire to donate to the work should send their contribution to the congregational treasurer: Mr. Richard Waldecker, P.O. Box 6156, Plymouth, MI 48170-0156, or one may place a contribution in the offering box at the back of the room when worship services are held. Checks should be made payable to the "Detroit Preaching Station Church." Our Testimony We bear witness to the gospel of God's sovereign love, and follow the simple and reverent pattern of worship which the Reformation recovered from the Bible, with each element of the service authorized in the Word of God. Officers in our church subscribe to the whole doctrine of the Westminster Confession of Faith, as a confession of their own faith. We believe that the believer's experience of salvation is more than a mere acceptance of biblical doctrine. It is not enough that children be raised in the church or be educated in biblical principles, because each hearer of the Word needs to come to personal contrition for sin, and to turn to the Savior for deliverance. A living union with Christ will be manifested in godly living and a heart devotion to Christ. We believe that the gospel must regularly and frequently be proclaimed to the congregation, explaining how to become a Christian and how one may know that he is a believer. The preaching of God's Word in the congregation must promote conviction of sin, show the way to Christ through faith and repentance, discriminate between the converted and the unconverted, nurture and encourage the believer in the comfort and assurance of faith, fence the Lord's table against the admission of all who are in scandalous sin, and warn professing Christians of the danger of eternal destruction if they are not in saving union with Christ. The preaching must aid the Christian believer in his ongoing experience of faith and repentance, mortification of sin, temptation and trial. The preaching should explain from the Scriptures what it means to experience the power of the truth, providing guidance to the believer for his self-examination, patient submission to trouble, and fervent love to Christ.
