Wolverine Airborne
The Canopy Official Newsletter of the Wolverine Chapter 82d
Airborne Division Association, Inc. As Chartered by the US Congress
It’s
Picnic Time!! You
are probably thinking, ‘Is this guy out of his
mind, it’s the middle of February and this is
Michigan!!’
You’re right it is the middle of February
and it is Michigan but when it is time to plan our
Annual Wolverine Paratrooper Family Picnic, its
time to get our annual raffle started. So
let’s get started.
The date has been set for our Paratrooper
Family Picnic and it will be Saturday, August 19th,
at the Lion’s Pavilion, Central City Park in
Westland. Now
that the date is set for the picnic, the great
news is, our raffle tickets are ready to go.
Remember this, our annual raffle is the
only official fundraiser we have to run our
Chapter with.
When you request tickets, take only as many
as you think you can sell.
In the past we have had too many troopers
request tickets and return them the day of the
drawing. If
you can’t sell them, them get them back to the
committee so we can get them to someone else, if
not remember the unwritten rule; eat the cost of
what you have!! Tickets
will be available starting with the 12 February
meeting. Those who can’t make the
meetings give Treasurer Larry McBride a call at
734-971-3970 or contact Chet Cassidy at ccassid1@msn.com
or 734-891-7959.
Do us a favor, have your buyer fill out the
ticket stub completely with telephone number and
address. MembershipWe
welcome new member Yann Ianucci who joined the
Wolverines as a transfer in January. Welcome
aboard Yann. We
also have two new All American Life members.
Congratulations go out to David ‘Bubba’
Hochstein and Carl Shefferd.
Going Life is the only way to go any more,
with the annual dues at $15 a year, you can save a
lot of grief by doing so.
Remember that over 50 y/o the cost is $100,
under 50 $150.
During
the tough time we had with the loss of John
Mooneyham, we over looked the Life Membership the
chapter gives out from time to time.
For 2005, Gary Ash was awarded his Life
Membership and he deserves the recognition for all
of his hard work with the chapter and within his
community. AwardsAgain,
lost in the shuffle was our awards given out for
2005. The
Trooper of the Year was Gary Ash.
The Wade Watkins Community Service Award
went to Vince Berna of Veteran’s Haven.
We added a new award called the
‘Wolverine Paratrooper Lifetime Achievement
Award’. This
new award was given to John Mooneyham.
This award will not be awarded every year
and the plan to go before the membership and ask
that we dedicate this award in honor of John
Mooneyham. Here
is the list of the Wolverine Chapter’s awards: ‘Trooper
of the Year’ determined by the Chapter Chairman ‘Wade
Watkins Community Service Award’ determined by
Committee ‘Wolverine
Paratrooper Lifetime Achievement Award’
determined by Committee ‘Horse’s
Ass Award’ determined by Committee Nominations
are always welcome and we do look at the troopers
involved and frankly, we welcome your input. Color GuardWell,
its that time of year to think about our Color
Guard and what we want to do.
The first parade application that the Color
Guard Coordinator has is for the Tulip Festival in
Holland, MI.
The parade is Saturday, May 13th.
The idea is to put together a float to
celebrate the 64th Anniversary of
‘Operation Market Garden’ and to help with the
later celebration of the 15th
Anniversary of the Holland Project.
The decision what to do will be at the 12
February meeting.
Also the Memorial Day Parade in Westland,
the Rose Parade in Jackson, the Summer Festival
also in Westland and the Warrior’s Day Parade in
London, ONT will have to be discussed so
applications can be sent in. 25th
Anniversary Celebration As
pointed out in the Winter Issue of the
‘Paraglide’ the Wolverine Chapter is one of
four chapters who received their Chapter Charter
in Huston, TX in 1981.
The other chapters are Central Jersey,
South Texas and Idaho.
A big hand of applause goes out to all the
Silver Anniversary Chapters. To
coincide with the Wolverine 25th
Anniversary celebration, the Picnic and
Installation of Officers Committees will be coming
up with different ways to help celebrate.
One thing the Installation Committee is
working on is to sell ads for a special
‘Anniversary Book’, the details hasn’t been
worked out yet but things will be ready for the
‘Big Party’ on the 3rd, 4th,
and 5th of November. A
big ‘hoorah’ to the Chicago Chapter and their
60th Anniversary bash coming up in
March. With
Chicago being the first chapter in the
Association, which chapters are 2nd and
3rd (no fair peeking)?
John Towle Cleveland Chapter (2nd)
and the LTG Games M Gavin Chapter (3rd).
Also celebrating 60 years of airborne
service is the 82nd Airborne Division
War Memorial Museum.
