Sandrock, Alabama 10/10/98
Sandrock, Alabama
October 10th -11th
Our trip to Sandrock, Alabama, was a lot of fun. The warm clear weather brought
out a lot of climbers. We set up numerous top ropes on the Jaws Block
Saturday morning, but by the afternoon the best climbs were being put up
by the leaders. Henry Gholz
set a top rope on Pin Chimney 5.8, while
Andy Mitchel set up another 5.8 on
the Holiday Block. Mehmet
Akgun, Kirsty Schenkel, and Patrick
Sullivan all saw their first climbs. Jim & Karin Waldrop, Jackie,
and I spent an hour exploring the caverns and passageways that run between
the rock walls at the east end. I finished up the day by slinging a
toprope on Jaws 5.9.
It was a quiet night by sandrock standards. Time was short Sunday, as we
wanted to hit the road by noon. Jay
Wozny and Henry led routes
up the Knob Wall, while Andy fought to the top of a 5.11 near the
Whipping Post.
Sandrock hasn't changed much. It's still trashed, but the numerous climber
cleanups have helped. The parking areas at the end of the road were packed.
It's an easy place to rig climbs, approaches are short, and there is a wide
range of grades available. I hope this place remains open.
