Welcome to my War of 1812 Memorial

Dedicated to those Walker men, related family members, their Knox County neighbors, and all Kentuckians who fought so gallantly for their young country during the War of 1812.

In particular, I include John W. "Squirrel Man" Walker and Christopher Walker who were the sons of John R. Walker, and Cornelius Taylor who was the husband of Sarah "Sally" Walker, daughter of Walter Walker. All were members of Captain Ambrose Arthur's Knox County Company of the Kentucky Militia. To put their efforts into perspective, they marched from Barboursville, Kentucky to Maumee, Ohio, a distance of 377 miles by present day highways. And, then, they fought the battle for Fort Meigs and the survivors marched home.

I especially dedicate this site to our two sons, Bob and Jim, one of whom is a seventeen year veteran of the U.S. Navy and the other of whom is a career U.S. Air Force officer.

This is a work in process and additional materials will be included as they are developed. Meanwhile, lets begin with a fantastic story about the Battle for Fort Meigs from Chapter XXIII of a book entitled:

THE PICTORIAL FIELD-BOOK OF THE WAR OF 1812

by Benson Lossing.

Before starting, a brief word about the content of the Muster Rolls.

The recorders of the information took great liberties with phonetic spelling of the soldiers names. Some really strange looking stuff. A search engine has been provided and should be used, but conditioned with the thought that not all names will appear due to spelling liberties.

Building the Muster Rolls was based on the fact that the Regiment name appeared on a map detailing troop movement during the siege of Fort Meigs, and on units that were in service during the dates of the siege - May 1 through May 5, 1813. Many more soldiers participated in the War of 1812 than are shown here.
