He was a surveyor in Perry County, KY before and after the Civil War. Also, he was County Clerk before the war and taught school in Letcher and Perry Counties after the war. According to his son, John Bud Walker, William's initials are carved into a large rock four miles north of Hindman, KY.

------------------------------------------------------------ In an undated, hand-written note by Mae Walker Hughes we find the following information.

"John Bud Walker came from Perry County, Kentucky at age of 17 years and lived with sister, Mary Adams. He worked on cattle ranches and helped drive cattle from Texas over the Chisom Trail, across Oklahoma, to Dodge City, Kansas to be shipped by train to the Chicago Markets. (Margin notes refer to him working for the West Texas Cattle Association as an Inspector, and working for the Maplewood Cattle Company)

[The following article was found by searching the Internet for Maplewood Cattle Co. It was located on the website of the 101 Ranch in Oklahoma] BAR L PASTURE March 19, 1898--The east Ponca reservation pasture is known as Bar L pasture and is so called by most people without an idea as to the derivation of the name, which it will probably always bear. It was in 1885 when the wires were strung around the big enclosure and the Maplewood Cattle Co. turned 2500 head of Texas cattle in to graze on the succulent grasses. The cattle were branded with –L hence the name—Bar L. John B. Walker was foreman for the cattle company and handled the cattle until they were ready to ship to the markets.

He made the run into Oklahoma Cherokee Strip on horseback, staked out a claim, but others claimed it.

After his marriage, he continued working on ranches for a few years (margin note refers to him working for Cal Sloan of Ponca City, Oklahoma when married), finally decided to become a farmer. When children were small, he moved to Hominy, Oklahoma and became a Constable and, later, a Deputy Sheriff for a few years and later moved back to the farm." ------------------------------------------------------------ The following information is an excerpt of a letter from Lucile and Norma Lantz.

"In 1920, John Bud Walker went to Arkansas looking for a farm with cheaper taxes. He bought 40 acres, north of Gassville, from Isaac Covington. He went back to Hominy, OK and loaded a railroad car on the Carter Oil Camp spur, which was near their home. Into the car went the furniture, belongings and 3 horses, Little Bonnie, her daughter Nellie, and Nellie's son Billy. This was in 1921.

They boarded the train with John Bud riding the stock car, as he had to feed, water and off-load the stock enroute. Dorrit and Lucile rode in the passenger car (Clara Mae and John Clark remained in Oklahoma) and arrived a day or two ahead of John Bud. The family, who were living at the farm, had not vacated, so Grandpa (John Bud) gave them $100 to leave. Grandma (Dorrit) told him if he'd give her that $100, she'd take Lucile and go back to Oklahoma." ------------------------------------------------------------

Dorrit was a school teacher near Elgin, Kansas prior to their marriage. An item in the Sedan, Kansas newspaper, about 1898, stated;

William died Sept. 1853, Near Fair Grove, Greene, MO, buried Adams Graveyard near Fair Grove, MO. Notes on William Martin, b. 1803. Information on this family was extracted from the Martin Family Record, 1760 - 1963, by W.S. (Hoosh) Martin. Following is quoted from that book.

This William Martin, Jr., was called Billy Martin and he is identified as a son of William Martin by Deed bearing date .....[apparent missing info].....Henritta called Riter who married William Martin Jr., of August 18, 1817, and recorded in Deed Book A, page 453, in the Floyd County Clerk's Office in Prestonburg, Kentucky. This deed conveys 225 acres of land located on right fork of Beaver Creek just below the mouth of Caney Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky. This land was conveyed to John and William Martin, infant sons of William Martin. If either of the said, John or William Martin shall die, without having issue his proportional of the above mentioned land shall absolutely vest to the other.

The record and information of Billy Martin, a brother to John Martin, married Anna Gayheart Martin. They, at one time owned all the land from the Mouth of Jones Fork up Right Fork of Beaver Creek to the Mouth of Caney Creek. Billy Martin and his brother, John Martin, were joint owners of large boundary of land, but William Martin, Jr., decided to sell and go west.

Billy and John Martin sold land at the mouth of Patton on Right Fork of Beaver Creek to Isom Sloan by Deed bearing date of April 18, 1841, recorded in Deed Book E., page 20, in the Floyd County Court Clerk's office.

William Martin, Jr., sold his undivided on half interest to his brother John Martin by Deed bearing date of October 28, 1844, and recorded in Deed Book E, page 523 in the Floyd County Clerk's Office at Prestonburg, Kentucky.

T.Y. Martin, ex-sheriff of Floyd County, Kentucky, says he heard his father, Daniel Martin, talk about his uncle, William Martin, Jr. moving to Missouri.

William Martin and Family left Kentucky between the dates of 1844 to 1850 and lived and died in Green County, Missouri, in September 1853 at the age of 50 years. William Martin, Jr. and wife, Ritta A. Martin buried in Adams Graveyard, Fair Grove, Missouri.

Ritta Adams was a relative of James Taylor Adams of Big Laurel, Virginia. This paragraph is a paragraph taken from a letter written by James Taylor Adams of Big Laurel, Virginia. James Taylor Adams stated that John Adams is the only son of Benjamin Adams of whom I have a record. He was executor of Ben Adams' will made in 1829. I find him viewer of a road from the mouth of Rock House to the end of Beaver Creek, which suggests that he may have lived in the Beaver Section. He married a Woolfink as his first wife, according to Frank Adams who lives at Whirlwind, West Virginia, and is a great great grandson. About 1845, John Adams moved from Kentucky to Green County, Missouri. I am not sure whether he married his wife, Jane, before going to Missouri or out there. He had several children: Benjamin, John, Spencer, Nelson, Sewell, and I think a dau.....[apparent missing information]......son of William and Susannah Tudor Martin. You will note that the 1850 census from Green County, Missouri, gives William Martin, Jr., born 1803 and Rtta Martin, born 1813 and their oldest child, Susannah Martin, named for William Martin's mother.

Ritta Adams Martin, wife of William Martin died October 27, 1853 in Green County, Missouri, and was no doubt, buried in the Adams Cemetery near Fair Grove, Missouri. So we think this family of Willam Martin, Jr. is the same William Martin and family that left Kentucky between the dates of 1844 to 1850, and located in Green County, Missouri. I am giving you the William Martin family on page ......, written by Mrs. R.A. Hughes at 12 Hanley Downs, St. Louis, Missouri. We think William Martin was born about 1803 although the 1850 census gave 1810. William Martin, Jr. and ife, Ritta Adms Martin were neighbors before their marriage as John Adams purchased a tract of land from William Martin, Sr., on September 20, 1810, recorded in Deed Book Number A, page 83, in the Floyd County Clerk's Office in Prestonburg, Kentucky. William Martin and wife and children moved from Kentucky to Green County, Missouri and lived out their days there. William Martin had 3 brothers, David, Joel, and John Martin, who lived and died in Floyd County, Kentucky. This is the end of 8B. William Martin, Jr., born 1803, deceased September 1853.

"Squirrelman" WALKER and Polly DEVERS) died 30-Dec-1879, Pecan Gap, Delta Co., TX, buried Waller Graveyard, Ben Franklin, TX, married (2) 10-Jan-1887, in Fannin Co., Texas, Miles MAYO. Catherine died 26-Jan-1905, Pecan Gap, Delta Co., TX, buried Pecan Gap Cementary.

James: Some sources say that James' middle name was Calvin.

James enlisted in the Confederate Army, 13th KY Cav, on October 10, 1862 while living in Floyd County, KY, and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on November 2, 1862. He was captured at the Battle of Cynthiana on June 12, 1864 and taken to Lousiville Prison. He was transferred to Johnson's Island Prison on July 29, 1864 and promoted to Captian while in prison. He was taken to Cincinnati, OH for trial on March 9, 1865. He escaped from McLean Barracks on June 30, 1865 by obtaining a rope at 3:00am and lowering himself down through a window.

James and his family came to Delta County, TX in 1867. According to Mae Walker Hughes, James was with the Southern Army with Morgan during the Civil War, was a Private enlisted as J.C. Walker at Jackson, Kentucky, September 1, 1862.

In the 1880 Delta County Census there was a Jefferson Walker, age 28, listed in the household of Kate Walker and shown as a Nephew. Clara Walker (daughter of William Devers and Susannah (Martin) Walker) was shown as a Niece. This listing of Jefferson Walker appears to indicate that James C. Walker had one more brother than is shown in this print-out, or that another Martin woman married another Walker man.

Page 326, Lamar Co., Texas Deed Book, records the purchase of 172 acres of land by James C. Walker on January 9th, 1871 for the sum of $1,000.00. It is interesting that the original Patentee of this tract of land was M.L. Tudor. More interesting is the fact that the grandmother of Catherine Martin was a Tudor.
