SAAC Calendar of SELECTED Upcoming Shoreline-Area Antique Auto Events

We are are now well into adding 2008 Connecticut Shoreline-area events--including Cruises (plus a few other selected events of interest from further outside of our area)...so don't forget to please...send us yours!... And to our friends who choose to copy & paste these listings onto other web sites, please don't forget to acknowledge where they came from--THANKS!

*3/11/2008 important update: Please note that we've moved all of the 2007 listings to a calendar archive page (since it's sometimes useful to refer back to what was published in the previous year about a particular event), so now this page is significantly less "hefty" and should load a little quicker. We are hereby once again nominating ourselves for the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

(Last updated 11/16, 11/30, 12/10, 12/14/2007, 1/4, 1/12, 1/21, 1/25, 1/31, 2/9, 2/15, 2/18, 2/21, 2/25, 2/27, 2/29, 3/7, 3/11, 3/17, 3/20, 3/26, 3/30, 4/4, 4/11, 4/14, 4/21, 4/26, 4/30, 5/2, 5/8, 5/16, 5/20, 5/23, 6/4, 6/16, 6/20, 6/29, 7/3, 7/12/2008)

This Calendar is originated and periodically updated by the Shoreline Antique Auto Connection, a not-for-profit enterprise run for antique auto enthusiasts, by antique auto enthusiasts. As the information presented here is gleaned from a WIDE variety of sources, there is no way we can vouch for the truth or accuracy of anything, and we STRONGLY suggest you get in touch with the applicable event contacts listed, to make sure the event is indeed going to be held (especially before you make a long trip to attend!). Thank you. SAAC, P.O. Box 3353, Stony Creek, CT 06405, e-mail CommonGear@aol.com, web site http://members.aol.com/SAACRegion/. Please send your CT Shoreline-area event listings for inclusion here (non-marque-specific events preferred).

OTHER RECOMMENDED ONLINE LISTINGS OF LOCAL CT-AREA CAR EVENTS - If you're interested in checking out other upcoming local car events, a site I often visit is the "Shows" section of http://www.specialinterest.com/, and also the Connecticut Council of Car Clubs (http://www.ctccc.net/) also has a frequently-updated version of it's popular "Calendar of Events" on the internet too--so, be sure to check them out! Lately we've also been extremely impressed with the "Classic Car Classifieds from Hemmings Motor News" web site (http://www.hemmings.com/) and now visit there often for event listings (very easy to narrow your search to "CT" events), and also tons of other info related to the old car hobby. And finally, we also like to check in often with Oldies 102.9 WDRC-FM's "Cruisin' News" page, located at: http://www.drcfm.com/features/cruisin_news.php .

Additional info - I was very fortunate to be able to visit the Golden Age of Trucking Museum in February of 2007, and filed a detailed report for the SAAC web site; the URL of the report is http://members.aol.com/cgearannex/GoldenAgeTruckMusFeb07.html - and as part of that report I included this photo of three of the original Danbury Racearena cars that were on display at that time, including Chick Stockwell's #151, and Jimmy Smith's #3, that are mentioned above in the Golden Age of Trucking Museum's March 29, 2008 press release: http://members.aol.com/cgearannex/GATMsm2Feb07StckCrs.JPG . The direct link to the online event flyer is: http://www.ocean-beach-park.com/bikeblessing2008.jpg . The dates are as follows: April 20th, May 18th, June 15th, July 20th, August 17th, September 21st, October 19th. We will be looking to add activities to each of these events, such as a car cruise, a swap meet, and so forth. More info will be posted as it gets finalized...All suggestions are welcome! Help spread the word - get on the phone! Spread the word about this website by e-mailing all your friends! Let's have a great turnout for the 20th of April! We're keeping the same basic format...completely street legal, right down to the exhaust and tires. We plan on keeping the indexes (2.00, 2.50, 3.00, 3.50), but we are also going to do full bracket events in which you dial in your handicap..." We heard about this via an e-mail dated 4/4/2008 from our old car friend Dean from East Haddam (HotRodLincoln28A@aol.com), who wrote: "...you might want to check out this event at www.100footdrags.com starting in just three weeks! They held two events last fall to get things started which I did not attend, but from what I hear it was pretty fun, not to mention the first form of drag racing back in Connecticut since the Dragway closed in 1985..." Additional info - The Waterford Speedbowl web site is: http://www.speedbowl.com/ - and the Waterford Speedbowl itself if physically located at: 1080 Hartford Turnpike (Route 85), Waterford, CT 06385--which appears to be just off of I-395, Exit #77. APRIL 23, 2008, Wednesday, Branford - Friendly's Fund-Raising Night for Boy Scout Troop 441 of Stony Creek, at Friendly's Restaurant, 30 Leetes Island Road, Branford, CT (corner of East Industrial Road), 5-8pm; FYI - This is the Friendly's that's right off of I-95, Exit 56 (a.k.a. the Stony Creek exit); and is located physically right in front of Super Stop & Shop. Obviously, this is not a "car" event, but I did want to include it here to help get the word out about this important fundraiser for our local newly-formed Boy Scout Troop 441, which is based at the Stony Creek Fire House; my son Matt and I are members of the Troop (Matt is Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, has achieved "Life" rank and is working toward Eagle; I am a greenhorn Assistant Scoutmaster). The way this works is that for anyone who visits this particular Friendly's on Wednesday, April 23rd, between 5 and 8pm, Friendly's will donate up to 20% of the proceeds to the Troop! So, you can see that there is great potential for the Troop to raise important funds for needed equipment. There will be plenty of our Troop's Scouts and Leaders, in uniform, on hand there to help greet customers and friends, and who knows, perhaps they might even allow me to park an old VW out by the road during those hours, to help lend a bit of "old car flair" to the festivities. Anyway, it should be a fun evening, and if you have any questions, please feel free to call or e-mail me, Steve, at 203-494-6009 (cell), commongear@aol.com . Thanks and hope to see you there! (this event listing was added to this calendar as of 3/30/2008)

MAY 10, 2008, Saturday, Westbrook - The Morgan School "Lucky 13th Annual Car Show" at the Tanger Outlet Center, Westbrook, CT (Exit 65 off of I-95, and follow the signs). 10am-2pm. Rain date = Saturday, May 17th, 2008 (downpour only; postponement info, call Laura at 860-391-2718). Trophies will be awarded-judging done by the students. Dash plaques will be given to the first 100 vehicles to register. Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted at this event and donated to a local soup kitchen. No burnouts in the parking lot or access road please! This event is free to all spectators, and a $5 entry fee for all show cars. This event is organized by The Transportation Technology Students of The Morgan School, Clinton, CT; instructor: jcole@clintonpublic.org . We received this event listing from Mr. Cole of The Morgan School-via an electronic copy of the official event flyer that he emailed to us on 2/26/2008. In a separate e-mail, also dated 2/26/2008, responding to my original inquiry, Mr. Cole wrote: "...Thank you for your superb coverage (and kind words) of The Morgan School Car Show(s). Your support of our event is greatly appreciated. I have shared your email with the students as they are busy preparing for the 13th annual car show. They are looking forward to meeting you and wanted me to tell you that they are busy designing a 13th annual car show T shirt that will be silk screened in-house with the assistance of our graphics instructor Mr. Enoch. The shirts will be available the day of the show...We appreciate your offer to help in the promotion of this year's show and have attached a flyer to an email I will forward (separately)...The students are again doing a great job...As you know, this event is organized, run and judged by the students...Thanks again for your support and help, Jay Cole..." Additional info - It is no secret that we are big fans of the annual Morgan School Car Shows--they're wonderfully run, showcasing the organizational skills and humanitarian spirit of the students--and I can't wait to see the student-produced t-shirts that Mr. Cole mentions also! We also really enjoy the early-season, and Shoreline-local opportunity that the Morgan School Car Show provides to get the old cars out for a pleasant "dust off" type of run. My son and I had a fantastic time attending (and participating in) the 2007 version of this event--please be sure to view our online report at: http://members.aol.com/cgextras/MorganShow2007.html - and also our report on the 2005 version, which is viewable online at: http://members.aol.com/cgextras/MorganShow2005.html . We are certainly planning to get back to Westbrook for the '08 version! (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/27/2008)

MAY 17, 2008, Saturday, New Haven - "...Classic Car Show, 'Indiana Jones And The Elm City'...See where the latest Indiana Jones film was shot, 12-4pm...(webmaster's note: we've revised this slightly to note that the organizers have indicated that there is no rain date; the ending time for the festivities has also been revised from 6pm to 4pm)...on Chapel Street, from College Street to York Street, Free, no charge to participate...Vehicles must be 1957 and earlier only...Cars must arrive between 10am and 11:30am...Chapel Street will be closed to traffic; all drivers will receive a commemorative T-Shirt and movie poster...Live music, street performers, give-aways, Indiana Jones look-alike Contests...Info: Brian Hornby, Office of Cultural Affairs, 165 Church Street, New Haven, CT, (203) 946-2896, bhornby@newhavenct.net ..." webmaster's note: Sounds like quite a spectacle! We've written to the organizers to see if we can obtain any further info--and we'll certainly present it here whenever we may hear back from them... *4/30/2008 UPDATE: In his followup e-mail response to my inquiry about any other available event info, Mr. Brian Hornby (Program Officer, Office Of Cultural Affairs, 165 Church St., New Haven, CT 06510, 203.946.2896, BHornby@newhavenct.net ) wrote: "...Steve, Thanks for getting in touch with me. Right now we are putting the finishing touches on the promo materials. As soon as I get a copy I will forward it along to you as well as the website we are working on. I would like to note that there will be no rain date, so we will have to play things by ear for the 17th. Due to space constraints I would like to get a count of the number of drivers interested in participating, so any help with that is appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you, Brian..." I advised Brian that we will do our best to pass along, in as timely a manner as possible, any additional info about the event that he wished to get out--I would also suggest that interested people keep referring back to the SAAC's web site calendar page (http://members.aol.com/saacregion/Calendar.html - that's this page by the way!) for updates close to the date... *5/2/2008 UPDATE: I wrote back to Brian Hornby a couple more times today to ask about some further details related to this event, and have some more important info to pass along. First:, I asked if I needed to "pre-register" my (1957 or earlier) antique auto, and he indicated that I just needed to show up at the show site at the appointed time (10am to 11:30am--though it sounded like an arrival time at the earlier end of that range is advisable...and if you read his original response, I think he'd still like to hear from old car people who want to participate, so that he can get an idea of possible total numbers of classic cars that may be coming...). Secondly, I asked Brian where to shoot for when driving there (in other words, where is the "entrance" to the car show "field"), to which he replied: "the intersection of College and Chapel Streets." Finally, Brian also sent me an electronic copy of the overall event poster (the classic car show is only a small part of what looks to be a real extravaganza in downtown New Haven to celebrate the opening of the new movie: "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"), and if you'd like me to send you an electronic copy of same--or a snail mailed copy of a print-out of the poster--I'd be glad to do so. I'm also inserting a hyperlink to a reduced-file-size electronic copy of the poster (since the original file size is rather huge--click HERE to see the reduced copy we just posted online) for the SAAC's online calendar listing for this event (wish me luck!). Anyway, at this point, I think we're going to try to participate--should be quite an adventure... (this event listing was found at the Special Interest Vehicles web site, http://www.specialinterest.com , within the "best shows" section, and was added to this calendar as of 4/25/2008; additional updates were added to this listing as of 4/30/2008; more significant updates were added & incorporated here as of 5/2/2008)

MAY 25, 2008, Sunday, Hamden - Memorial Day Weekend Antique Car Show at Quinnipiac University. For whatever it's worth, we are adding this event notice here due to a note that Jack Danovich sent us in early March, 2008, revising the start date of the F.O.R.D. Club's Dino's of North Haven Sunday Cruises (see the Cruise Night section of this calendar), though we've historically seen very little advance notice ever published for it, and also have had very little luck attempting to contact the organization that apparently runs it, for any advance information. So, just to be clear: we have received no direct information about this event. We can say, however, that past versions of it that we've attended have been a lot of fun, and it seems to be very well-supported by area antique auto enthusiasts; reference our own report about having attended the 2007 version: http://members.aol.com/cgextras/HmdnMemDayWkndShw2007.html - Please also note also that as far as I know, there is no flea market associated with this event. For you Mapquesters, Quinnipiac University is located at 275 Mount Carmel Avenue, which is directly off of Whitney Avenue/Route 10, right by Sleeping Giant state park; Q.U. also has a map & directions page online at: http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x28.xml *4/26/2008 UPDATES: We just received another helpful e-mail from our friend Jack Danovich on 4/25/2008; Jack writes: "...Just a heads up/confirmation on the Memorial Day Car show at Quinnipiac College...Talked to a very good friend of mine who is an officer in the Connecticut Classic Chevy Club (who puts the show together) and the show is definitely on and will be held at Quinnipiac on Sunday, May 25th, with a rain date of Monday, May 26th. Pre-registration is $10.00 (if you have attended the show in the past you will likely receive a flyer in the mail for pre-registration) and day of the show will be $12.00 at the gate. Show registration is from 8:00 am to 12 noon, with trophies awarded around 3:00 pm..." Sounds good Jack--and thanks again for passing along this helpful info! (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/7/2008; updates added as of 4/26/2008)

MAY 26, 2008, Monday, Branford - Branford Memorial Day Parade - Quoting from the postcard received in mid-January from Branford Veterans Parade Committee Chairman Thomas Yester: "...Branford Memorial Day Parade, Monday, 26 May...Assembly at Town Green, cars should park on Blackstone Drive, facing wrong way; join the parade at the end of the High School students, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, going west on Main Street, turning into Bradley Street, returning East on Main Street past the reviewing stand...In the event of rain, there will be no parade & ceremonies will be indoors...Tom Yester, 203-488-8874..." *3/31/2008 Updates: Here is the schedule of key events, per a followup correspondence from Chairman Yester that was postmarked 3/21/2008: "...Assembly at Branford Town Green 9:30am...Ceremonies on the Green at 10:00am...Parade steps off 10:30am..." Additional info - We love driving our old cars in the Branford Memorial Day Parades, as a way to remember, honor, and show respect & gratitude to our country's soldiers who have given so much. Please be sure to view our report on antique auto participation in the 2007 Branford Memorial Day Parade, online at: http://members.aol.com/foxcraft/BranfordMemDayPrd07.html . Additional comments - Based upon my having driven old cars in the Branford Memorial Day Parade now for several years, it is my recommendation to try to get to the Blackstone Drive antique car staging area early, since the area fills up quickly with spectators. Also, it has been my experience that there is frequently an officer stationed at the South Main Street intersection with Blackstone, who will not let you drive the "wrong way" up the street to get to the staging area-therefore, you'll have to drive all the way up to Main Street and then come down Main to Blackstone, to get staged. Finally, it appears I'm going to be busy marching with the our Boy Scout Troop this year, so I probably won't be driving an old car in the Parade, but hopefully I'll have my camera along to snap a picture or two... (this event was added to this calendar as of 1/21/2008; listing updated with key times for pre-parade events and parade step-off, as of 3/30/2008)

MAY 26, 2008, Monday, Old Lyme - "...The 4th Annual Lyme-Old Lyme Memorial Day Antique Car Show & Flea Market - at the Lyme Art Academy (84 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, CT 06371), 9am-3pm, awards at 2pm.There will be 13 classes, all judged by people's choice. We also received an electronic press release from a representative of Lyme-Old Lyme High School, that was attached to an e-mail dated 4/4/2008; it provided some additional details, which we've attempted to add to this listing; an "official contact" for the event was also listed in the press release: Jim Graybill, 860-434-3530. (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/31/2008; additional details were added as of 4/4/2008)

Thanks again Mr. Shirley and the Madison Boys Soccer club for keeping us on the mailing list for this event announcement! I wrote one more follow-up and asked what the terrible thing was--turns out this man's house and barn were lost in a fire last week. I did some googling and found a few local media stories: Republican American - http://www.rep-am.com/news/347729.txt , News Times - http://www.newstimes.com/ci_9637958?source=most_emailed , WFSB Channel 3 - http://www.wfsb.com/news/16589596/detail.html . I also remembered having seen a restored race car listed as being Chick Stockwell's, when I visited the Golden Age of Trucking Museum (Middlebury, CT) back in early 2007 (ref: http://members.aol.com/cgearannex/GoldenAgeTruckMusFeb07.html), though I don't know if the same vehicle is one of those that was lost in last week's fire. Anyway, that's as much as I know--thought it was worth passing this additional information along. (this event listing was added to this calendar as of 6/19/2008; additional background info was added as of 6/23/2008)

Taking note of the "...Plus Old Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles..." wording in their listing appearing at the Hemmings Motor News web site (a similar listing also appears on craigslist for northwest CT), I ended up sending a message to the listed e-mail contact (delco52@yahoo.com), inquiring about whether there is any recommended day out of the three for old car folks to show up, and received a very prompt and courteous response, as follows (from an e-mail dated 2/27/2008): "...Fri., Sat., Sun...show your car, whatever old stuff you have...if you want a vendors spot you camp for free...you can leave the car Fri. to Sun.--we will be there 24/7 for the show...Any questions email delco52@yahoo.com or call me (in Connecticut, days) 203 247 2579, ask for Steve..." Additional info - Old Bethany Airport is located on Route 63, Amity Road, in Bethany, CT--no street address I could find, but it appears to be approximately across the street from Munson Road--so if you know how to get to Munson Road off of Route 63, you're all set. Sounds like a unique event, worth checking out! (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/27/2008)

JULY 27, 2008, Sunday, Guilford (confirmed!) - "Time Machines 2008," 30th Annual Car Show & Flea Market, presented by the CT Area Classic Thunderbird Club, Inc. We've just heard, as of a mid-February 2008 e-mail message from car show chairman Fred Klaus, that the 2008 version of the big Time Machines antique auto show & flea market has a new home base: The Guilford Fairgrounds! Quoting from Fred's e-mail dated 2/15/2008: "...It is official. The Time Machines Car Show and Flea Market has moved from Durham to the *Guilford Fairgrounds.* It will be held on July 27th (always the fourth Sunday in July). We think the Guilford Fairgrounds offer much improved facilities, just off I-95 exit 59. There is a larger area for show cars, spectator parking, and permanent bathrooms. We will have numerous food vendors so we will have no lines. The layout is excellent. We will do more advertising this year and hopefully the show will be as big as ever. With this new location we have room to grow. ..." Thanks Fred for the very exciting updates, and readers please be aware we'll be updating this listing as we hear more about the all-new-for-08 details! Meanwhile, you can snail mail your event inquiries to: CT Area Classic T-Birds, Inc., P.O. The Fairgrounds are also partially bordered by Stone House Lane at the south side. The Guilford Fair also has their own web site: http://www.guilfordfair.org/ - however I checked it for directions on how to get to the Fairgrounds, and only found directions to the Fair's shuttle bus stations. If you plug in the official mailing address for Guilford Fair Concessions into Mapquest, however, you'll get a very good idea of where you want to head for: 111 Lovers Lane, Guilford, CT 06437 (this event was added to this calendar as of 12/10/2007; very important updates added as of 2/18/2008)

CRUISE NIGHTS

IMPORTANT: Since the world of Cruise Night listings seems to be especially filled with old, out-of-date information--which has, on occasion, led to frustrating drives to non-existent cruises (we speak from direct personal experience!)--we've decided to do our best to only list confirmed listings (though we still urge you to call ahead before making any long trips, since we cannot guarantee anything), which we'll clearly highlight with a noticeable color--we used red for confirmed '07's (*3/11/2008 update: we've since moved all of the obsolete 2007 stuff to a calendar archive page)--and are going back to fuchsia for the confirmed '08's, since that's what we've also been doing for the 2008 car show listings above... Anyway, now that it's the New Year, if you have any confirmed 2008 cruise event listings, please send us yours--especially those Shoreline-oriented, for inclusion here--Thanks!

SUNDAYS (2nd and 4th of the month; please note revised season kickoff date: 6/8), North Haven (confirmed for 2008) - "...Cruise Nights 2008: Presented by the F.O.R.D. Car Club of Wallingford. Come on down and join us for our 16th season of cruising at Dino's Seafood Restaurant on Route 5, 1 mile south of Wharton Brook Park (Exit 13 off of I-91) in North Haven, CT. Our first cruise for 2008 will be on Sunday, June 8th (NOTE: this is a revised start date, per a 3/7/2008 update from Jack Danovich--see below), then will be held on the second and forth Sunday's of the month, through October 12th, with a rain date of the following Sunday. All cruises run from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and feature a D.J. spinning great classic tunes, 50/50 raffle, giveaways and of course Dino's great food is always available! Three trophies are awarded every cruise night with all winners chosen by participant voting. Sorry, no motorcycles allowed. There is no cutoff date, but the F.O.R.D. Club does reserve the right to refuse entry to any vehicle. For additional info please call (860) 685-0688. E-mail inquires can be sent to jdanovich@snet.net ..." We appreciate our friend Jack Danovich of the F.O.R.D. club sending us along this ready-to-use event listing, via his e-mail dated 2/26/2008. *Update as of 3/7/2008: Quoting from Jack Danovich's e-mail message dated 3/7/2008: "...Had our monthly FORD club meeting last night and we will not be starting our 2008 cruise night season until Sunday, June 8th. The rest of the schedule for the season remains the same. The reason for the change is the original May 25th date is the same day of the Quinnipiac show and also Dino's (our location) will not be open on the 25th. If you could make the start date change to our cruise night ad (no rush) we would appreciate it...." No problem, Jack--and thanks for the heads-up! I guess I should probably also add the Quinnipiac event to our calendar at the same time... We sure had a fantastic time attending one of these fine events back in June of 2006, with our report viewable online at: http://members.aol.com/cgearannex/DnosNrthHvnCruzJune06.html - and we are greatly looking forward to getting back to more of the F.O.R.D. club Dino's cruises this coming season! (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/27/2008; revised start date listed as of 3/7/2008)
