This Site Needs YOU!
A Message from James Talley, Web Manager
Parishes need volunteers in every capacity, from liturgical ministries to making deliveries, from typing up schedules to sitting on commissions and councils. It should come as no surprise that St. Elizabeth's internet ministry also needs volunteers.
If you have not read the description of this site and how it is managed, you may profit from checking out ABOUT THIS SITE. In summary, this site is a volunteer project provided by me, under the supervision and direction of Fr. Frank and Sr. Rose. No matter how a site is managed, there are drawbacks. In our case, the drawbacks generally concern my low-tech equipment, my inexperience and ignorance of web page design and publishing, and my limited resources of time and energy in adding or altering content on this site.
Experienced internet users know that this website leaves a lot to be desired in comparison with many other sites, including even other local church sites. There's one reason for this: the web manager is a rank amateur.
I "learned" to create web pages through America Online, and as experienced users already know, this doesn't amount to "learning" much at all. Currently these pages are designed through AOLpress, a limited web editor. In addition, I work on a 486 PC, with no soundcard or speakers, utilizing AOL 3.0 (because I lack the hardware to upgrade to 4.0), no CD-ROM drive, and no graphics files. Beyond this, I lack the basic computer knowledge to more fully describe my own system. In addition, I face a small Catch-22: devoting the time to expand my knowledge of even this software encroaches on the time I have available to upload new content and information.
Why then, did I decide to create the website? Because I could do something, however meager and amateurish, and because something was better than nothing. Not only would I be unsurprised that many parishioners possess superior computing and web design skills than me, but I'm betting on it.
If you are one of those persons--or if you simply have email--you can help with the maintenance and development of this site. There are two levels of involvement:
1. Low-tech.
If you have email and some time on your hands, you may help me post information to the site. All you need to do is get in touch with me and volunteer to type into email the text of something for the site: Bishop George's weekly message in the Register, announcements from the bulletin, newsletter articles, etc. Contact me via email at SaintEAS@aol.com, and get an "assignment." Type it up, email it to me, and you will have saved me that much time and helped make the posting that much more prompt. You need not worry about a long-term commitment. Even helping in this capacity once in a while will lighten my load. Anyone with email and the ability to type up hard copy can be of service to the parish in this way.
2. Higher-Tech/Educational.
Here the possibilities are yours to define, since I do not know much of what is possible with web design. Our site might utilize frames, for instance, if only I knew how to create them using AOLpress. Or graphics--posting St. E's "logo" on the site is beyond my abilities and know-how. If you are an experienced web-designer, if you know AOLpress, if you know how to create image files and upload them to the web--congratulations: you know more than I. If you can spare the time and energy to school me or otherwise assist me, and if you can bear working so far below your level of expertise, I welcome the help.
If you are interested in volunteering in either capacity, or simply have questions, please contact me at JTalley4n6@aol.com, SaintEAS@aol.com, 825-0827, or via "snail mail" at 1102 State Street, Salina, KS 67401.
Thank you for any support you may be able to provide.
