Award of the Council of Europe 1991Salt is white, salt makes thirsty, salt has no scent, salt is not expensive, salt is an insignificant white grain. But just this small grain makes any kind of life possible. Without salt life on earth would be impossible. Is this not enough cause to treat this mineral in due respect?
Why in the German city of Lüneburg?
Lüneburg is
the City of Salt in northern Germany. More than 1000 years salt determined the history of
this city. Only in 1980 the production of salt was discontinued. The salty history of one of
the oldest and biggest industrial plants in Europe was in danger to get lost.
Therefore at the place of the old production plant the German Salt Museum / Industrial Monument Saltworks of Lüneburg was born. Being one of the first industrial monuments in Germany this museum can be considered to be pioneer of a new generation of museums. The museum sees itself as a "hands-on Museum". Things worth knowing, things of interest, exciting and strange things about salt the visitor can find out in a clear and not very "museum" way. The museum does not back off but makes one concerned. Concerned about the fascinating world of salt that surrounds us every day but that we are seldom aware of.
Not everybody knows all about salt!
